Btw after 15 years of playing for maestro Howard Snell, for me simply the finest musician I have ever had the privilege to work with, this was the only time I saw a tear in his eye in a performance.
I can tell you that many of us had a tear in our eyes too, listening to your solo in Mvt II. I and my colleagues in the Saskatoon Brass Band (Canada) would get together with a bottle of Lagavulin (back when we could afford it) or Highland Park, and put this on in a darkened room with a good stereo. We would be overwhelmed by the performance; meanwhile our spouses would sit in another room and snicker at our quasi-religious devotion to this music. We aptly named these gatherings Brass Band Geek parties. Time for another, methinks. Thank you for this and your other wonderful contributions to music.
Goodness me, just seen this on UA-cam after all these years. What a fabulous day it was for the band, they were on top form throughout that decade. So privileged and truly proud to have been part of it all. Wonderful memories indeed and an real honour to be part of that wonderful team of players. Happy days 😊
I was playing with a band in the Euro's that year and I remember sitting in the audience listening to this thinking 'I've never heard anything like this'. The last movement separates the boys from the men and I've never heard it played as well since.
7.20 mins.... Some of the best tone progression/melody progression I have ever heard in a brass band piece. First time I heard this piece it blew my favourite test pieces out of the water, and immediately became my favourite. Well played by all in the band. So amazing. So brilliant. Well done Philip Sparke. I hope that one day my composition skills can get as good as you.
I had the pleasure of being in the audience that day. Sat though every performance and this own choice was a knockout (although I did hear rumblings that the 2nd movement was a bit kitchy).I still think it is top class...and the last movement just blows me away, even when I played it! -Philip Sparke knows how to write fantastic brass band music, always exciting, technically difficult at whatever level and generally good on the ear.
Often find Sparke's compositions a bit formulaic and in some cases a little lacking in the substance department (they just don't catch my feelings and take me on a journey, they're transparently testpieces - often still fun to play, though) - this one is comfortably his best writing.
I was lucky enough to be playing at the Europeans that year with the band that came 6th and I remember listening to this performance live. It sent shivers down my spine then and still does now, all this time later. Superb playing
I assure you, it's still special - that performance would probably still win 9/10 contests. The final section is rock hard, to get that kind of clarity and at that speed is absolutely sensational. The middle section is far more difficult than this makes it sound, especially with the warmth and control that this displays (a warmth that is sadly lacking from certain bands right now, especially right at the very top...)
Tylinar Jacobson I'm not sure I agree - there are lots of clean performances of technically harder pieces, but the trend towards low-risk approaches with the aim on not losing points means the truly hair raising, emotionally moving musical performances seem to be lacking. Cory in particular I find rather sterile and whilst sensationally good technically, the sound and expression just doesn't satisfy me, personally. YMMV
Philip Sparke is the modern day Elgar! The interlude in this piece is something that Elgar couldn't have written any better! The playing by Foden's band in this performance is also something that no other Band in the World could ever improve on!

everyone says this is the best performance.. of all the recordings i've heard of this magnificent piece, nothing is like Eikanger-Bjørsvik Musikklags winning performance from the Norwegian Nationals in 1999!
In the rigid structure of brass band, just like in any other mass musician group, there is little room for maneuver in a written piece. But, solo work is different. Philip Sparke gave this solo to trombone for a reason, Sparke had a dream, and Nick Hudson recognized that dream. Nick connected. Some things you just cannot convey on a sheet of manuscript.
This performance is something else... Up there with the absolute best performances of all time in brass band history.

Howard is a true legend. This is just awesome. And still holds up to today`s best performances.
Just simply superb!
No wonder Mr Snell had a tear in his eye. That middle movement and the blazing third movement would put a tear in anyone's eye.
Britannia was superb at rhat moment with a giant maestro and wonderfull players❤
The decision to put an ad right in between II. and III. is criminal and should not go unpunished
Good gracious! This trombone soloist is the freaking golden child!
これもう泣きながら演奏してるだろ笑
じゃないとこんな情熱的な演奏できないぞ
I don’t think any brass band recording comes close to this. This is still the benchmark to beat… outstanding!

Didn't you play the trombone solo on this recording? God damn, some inspirational stuff, sir. Fantastic interpretation from you and the band.
That's so very kind of you, thank you. T'was a good day for all :-)
Great reprise of your solo yesterday, Nick!
Thanks Andrew, I'd forgotten what a great piece it is. Take care.
What a day, Nick Hudson!

That push up to 8:40 is just simply outstanding. GOOSEBUMPS

That horn melody line from 7:51 to 8:40 is freaking breathtaking. Drama!

Wow that is good. great piece, awesome playing, wonderful ensemble
6:19 The best phrase in music I've ever heard
8:10 that descending line with the euphs and horns topped by the soprano is just magical.

Deiniol Williams I was there with Northop for the concert and saw this performance live, still get goosebumps 26 years later

You need to hear Desford's Performance...their middle movement....the dynamics.....that's the best one in the world!!!
THE original and STILL the BEST! Thank you! :)
As for the composition Movement II is genius.
When every player in the band reaches level 100........
Insanely good.....world class performance.

Just incredible! 👏👏👏👏
Best version EVER :)

this performance changed my life...
I like brass band better than wind orchestra!
Yay!
oh the fun i had trying to master the solo cornet part :/ would do it all again in a heartbeat :)

Which is the best passage in all of the brass band repertoire? 6:20 - 8:40 is definitely a contender!

Does the instruction call for trombone sliding, cause there's a ton sliding going on in this recording.

Too many gaps. I played in 1986 too.
Movement II is still a bit fast for my likings.
Just not quite as good as Desford.......
please post Desford performance. Because this is musical perfection. Middle movement is not bettered by live music anywhere in my humble opinion
Yes, please post where to find the Desford performance, all that is on UA-cam is a minute and 30 second clip...
