With that huge hoop coop, will you consider putting in a dust bath for the chickens? The water fowls clean themselves in the water but chickens can only do it in dry earth...
I think its wise to get all your mama cows acclimated to milking (safely in a stanchion) or at least to being handled, while you dont need it. After they calve again, you may want to milk to get some colostrum to save and freeze for future emergencies. Also, it just gets them used to be handled a bit for medical needs. But, definitely create a gate system so that only one can enter and be in the stanchion and the rest are excluded, and then release through the other side. If you're sitting with your head buried in a cows side, you wont be able to see a jealous cow come up on you.
I LOVE that a few dollars of the ADORABLE Toby Dog plushie is being DONATED to the Vermont Food Bank. Thank YOU SO much Morgan!!! That will help them so very much 💝
I Love how much room the birds have. I hope this coop holds up. I love silkies I had them as pets as a kid and they loved being handled and we would bring them in the house. My friends thought it was cool that they were house trained. I love the plushie.
Abby is an eager beaver, where as Toby is Mr. Mello. Morgan, your hand feeding the herd the alfalfa treats by hand has really paid off. They're letting you touch them more and more. Good job! I'm sure you will soon be able to milk the cows. Just a suggestion, protect the lower plastic portions of the hoop coop doors from the geese before they cause any damage. The birds really love the pumpkins. Everyone at GSF looks very happy and contented.
The birds are really liking that hoop house, and the geese are exactly where I thought they'd go,lol. So good to see how much more relaxed the cattle are this year, but I'd still be extra careful trying to milk her. All is well at Gold Shaw Farm and that is a good thing. Thanks Morgan, have a great weekend.
I think you should bring in someone who has milked a cow before, to come onto the farm and test milk Ariel. Someone with experience might be able to read cow body language better in the crouched position. Just as a safety measure.
Abbys coat strangely enough does look like it's thickening up, I'm guessing the cold weather must heavily effect if they grow a proper winter coat or not
@@ljcl1859 Abby is also still a puppy. Most breeds don't finish their coat change until 18-24 months sometimes even longer. I'm not saying she isn't a short coat because I have no idea if she is or not, Maremma's aren't my breed.
Toby Dog needs more alone time with you, because I can see Abby is wanting all the affection and pushes Toby out. When Toby was nuzzling your leg I think he was saying, 🐕 Abby is getting all the pets, I want some.
So glad you're keeping the weird chickens. They're so pretty! Maybe they don't make much economic sense for your farm, but you enjoy them and that's enough. Also glad to see the return of Release The Quacken!
I'm just glad to see Toby in the thumbnail. I don't know how I'd have gone thru my day if I didn't see Toby while the title said 'turned him into a plushie'😂🙃
Love the plushie. You’re doing a great job using the new hoop coop and it’s great to see the birds are all coexisting. The addition of the outdoor run this year is great. I wonder if scratching Jimmy around the horns sets him up for interacting with you with that part of his anatomy, which could be dangerous when he has horns. Maybe muzzle scratches instead? Thanks for your lovely videos. They warm my heart and I look forward to them. (PS got my plushie ordered!😉) added a tip- good feature!
Ariel seems to be cool with brushing, but I think you need to seriously consider the safety aspects of milking her. Plan it out so neither of you gets hurt. That's a cute plushie. Mr, Pablo always makes me think of my cat Fishbait. We lost him to cancer a couple of years ago. He followed me around outside to keep me safe, especially when I went to the road to get the mail. 😻
Before trying to milk, you should probably get the cows halter trained and lead trained. For your own safety, you need to be able to tie them up so they are used to standing still when tied. Otherwise they will really balk at milking. If you think any or your heifers are going to be milked, you should get them trained as well.
Love the inserts of music n movie shots ... Takes extra work but soooo much fun..... Yes remember those fawns caught in the pasture.... Omgosh the brush!!!!
I think keeping like 1 rooster and then like 3-4 mother hens for the silkies, then selling the babies or when they grow up. So this means you got your little family of silkies and the babies that are produced can be profitable and since you remove them from the flock each year you can keep the male to breed with those 3-4 mothers and prevent inbreeding. You probably wouldn't even need to incubate any silk eggs as well since they're relatively good mothers. Means you can keep a low maintenance, fun, happy space of the farm that doesn't hurt the farm business. Then if the mothers ever pass away, you keep the female babies from that clutch and then you finally can cull the male (but obviously optional since if you keep the male for that long, could be cool to keep him as I think replacing the mother hens than the rooster could possibly be cheaper, but I have no clue).
glad to hear you're not getting rid of the silkies, cats are so hard to impress!! as for milking you should be able to coax the cows into the milking stanchion with a bucket of feed
The second pet I ever had -- at the age of five -- was a duck. We had a creek that cut across the corner of our front yard. And actually, my brothers and I got three ducklings for Easter one year, but only to survived. And we had that beautiful creek right in our front yard.
I love checking back in on this channel every few months or so, and it's so crazy how big abby is and how friendly the cows are. things change fast on the gold shaw farm for sure.
What's funny is that her in Victoria, Australia we have been having really crappy weather and on the day we started having hot weather, you had to put the birds in their new home! Hopefully it's still nice as we have been forcasted to be having more rain again .(Welcome to Melbourne, if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes.)
Wow just seeing all of the changes you have done to your farm over the last several years is really impressive. You have a beautiful property Morgan. I can't believe I have been watching you for as long as I have. You keep things really interesting with the variety of projects you have going at any given time. Hi Morgan, I think if you use a cattle panel with the lower bars removed to help keep you safe you should be able to milk her. I was also wondering if it might be a good idea to leave Abbey in with the cattle letting her become their guardian dog.
Pumpkin - canned or fresh - is used for dogs and cats when they suffer from constipation OR from diarrhea. As my cat aged, she constipation became chronic. currently, I mix just less than 1/3 cup of pumpkin with her wet food (about 1/2 of a 2-oz can) and she never is constipated. The canned pumpkin can be for humans or for animals. Difference between the two is the pumpkin marketed for animals has more moisture than 'human' pumpkin. However, except for the moisture content, there are no discernable differences as the only ingredient listed is "organic pumpkin" for both.

Hello. Try a little scratch or regulate food in a bucket at roost time shake it to get stragglers to follow. Then toss in the hoop hour. Works everytime here🎉. As to dust bath in hoop house- my chicks just dig holes in their run no matter what I do. I would add some roosts for them tho at an area where the poop is out of your path and least draft. Home Depot tossed out some great soft wood pieces they use between pallets. About 4-5 ft long, maybe 3x3? Fits perfect in my small coup. 2 cross bars and add the wood up both sides? Or maybe between 2 parallel pallets? Your on your own creatively there! Lol love the farm!
With that huge hoop coop, will you consider putting in a dust bath for the chickens? The water fowls clean themselves in the water but chickens can only do it in dry earth...
Could do it super low cost too - a cheap plastic kids pool would provide more than enough space
He already does that. Last year we would fill one of the food tubs with fireplace ash for them. But he just does it occasionally but not every day.
so not only is Toby your sidekick, he is for now basically your farms mascot
