The concept of the Japanner is based on the Japanese izakaya: small pubs where workers relax after a long day at work with beer, sake, and finger food before commuting (often for hours) home.
In Spring the newest location at the beach of IJburg, Japanner Strandeiland, opened its doors. A Japanese spot at the beach is new in Amsterdam, and they wanted to incorporate that beachy feel into the décor.
The concept is an informal Japanese bar that serves small bites, made for sharing. Their goal is not to serve authentic Japanese cuisine but also to include local products to spice up the menu. One dish that stands particularly out there is Herring Sashimi with shiso, spring onion, and ginger ponzu. But the most popular dish is the Chicken Katsu, panko breaded chicken cutlet topped with Japanese barbecue sauce.
Next to the delicious and surprising food is the staff also trained in sake and Japanese whiskey and knows the menu by heart. So people can learn a bit more about Japanese cuisine and will leave a little more than fulfilled.
