LOVE the new intro! Excellent review. This game looks like a good middle ground between Eclipse and TI3, though being mostly a euro gamer myself, I'll have to stick to the Eclipse side. Still would love to try this some day.
Outstanding review! You clearly explained what looks to be a complicated game and provided opinion which helped me make a decision to buy this game. I like Eclipse, but have been wanting something just a bit more engaging and interactive. I think this might be it. I'm subscribed and looking forward to more reviews. Thanks.
This is only the second vid review I've seen you guys do, and I had to stop it to tell you that I noticed the music bed playing during this review did not go unnoticed by me! The first vid I watched was "For the Crown", b/c I love that game and think it is very underrated! To me, Dominion was a real snoozefest, but FtC is entirely different. BUT, I noticed the music bed during that review was entirely different from this one, which I think is a nice touch for conveying the game theme and type of gameplay. I'm also so glad to see other women who love boardgames making these videos!!
+Donna Brooks Glad you liked it. When we were shooting these videos, Rob (the producer / editor) at the time had a ton of open license music that he could use.
Hmm... depends! Exodus is a shorter game, and very combat focussed. TI is very long, and has a lot more paths to victory. I would say most gaming groups would probably get more play out of Exodus. That's not to say TI isn't absolutely brilliant, because it's a fantastically immersive game. Just... the commitment level means that most people who own it take it out only on very special gaming occasions. :)
StevieV I have to agree with Joanna on this one. Knee jerk buy, I would recommend Exodus. It still has that 'replayable' aspect that a lot of 4X style games have with a smaller cost in both money and time. Exodus, due to requiring around half the play time as Twilight Imperium, will be pulled off the shelf for play more often than Twilight Imperium unless your group has the unnatural love of the game like mine does. The game is fun, immersive and challenging. The 'missile/rocket' system can seem a little frustrating the first couple times you play through, but once you adjust to this the game comes back to center. If you have a player base that enjoys this style of game, Exodus is certainly near the top of the pile for this genre. I will say however, if you have a pretty dedicated gaming group that doesn't mind an 8 hour game session, Twilight Imperium is the epitome of space epic board games. There is nothing quite like the experience you get from throwing down a game of TI. You honestly feel like you're writing a complex space saga book as you play the game. The intricacies of politics, technology, combat and resource management are second to none. In short, either way you are going to get a great game that I imagine you'll thoroughly enjoy playing. Exodus provides a 4X space epic that can be accomplished in an afternoon and would be played more often if popular. Twilight Imperium will probably be dusted off less often, but will dominate your conversations for the time leading up to the game and through the next couple weeks after. Have fun and happy gaming!
This game is also known as Twilight Imperium:3 Lite. Both very great, very excellent games. The only difference is that I feel TI:3 has deeper theming, and about 4 or 5 more hours added to the play time, haha.
This is a much more combative game. Whereas in Eclipse there is more focus on managing your resources, here you focused on technology development, WMDs and your fleet. Eclipse is more streamlined in their resource management, though the technology side of Eclipse is more fiddly.
I bought the original version of this game, and although the quality was O.K, I had difficulty punching the token cleanly out of the Mantle. Seems they were coated with a thin mylar, which tended to tear.I think they must have fixed this on the re-release. Great game though.
I really like your demo, but I'm having a difficult time ignoring the background music. Your voice audio sounds crystal clear, please don't ruin it with music looping over it.
Are there different editions for this game? I bought it yesterday and some of the pieces look really different, like the player mats and such. If so, are there differences between these editions other than aesthetics?
HerrFinsternis There's at least 2 editions out. The first edition had some issues with the board and I believe rules, the review was for the 2nd edition.
Good Review, but near the end Joanna mentioned "exploration games." This game has no exploration. You turn over encounter cards to face aliens, but the board is predetermined, and the planets are known to all players before the game. There is no exploration.
That's true. Sometimes I ramble. :) That being said, I do think that most people who do enjoy the space exploration games out there like TI and Eclipse would probably get a kick out of Exodus; it does do the space travel, planet colonization theme well, with a lot of really tidy, intuitive mechanics.
It's not just you--lots of people call it a 4X game...but more like 3X. :) I play all of those, and I agree Exodus does have a place in that spectrum. I think the Technology is really good, as is the action system, and also the political/voting elements.
well, exploration aspect exist ! but is only limited to Centaurian Resistance by getting know how strong they are. Great Review ! Fantastic game ! Hope to see more reviews from You !!!
It also looks a lot like Twilight Imperium. Just with a thousand moving pieces instead of a million.
Watching in 2021. All I see is a gold mine of brand new Battlestar Galactica boxes!!

I don't think I've ever seen someone say "Fire weapons of mass destruction phase" with that much delight :)

Good to have you guys back!
Glad you guys are back!
Man, I miss y'all. Honest and straight forward reviews like this are far and few between.
P.S. That's my self created board game, "FAR and Few BETWEEN". It's not out yet, but y'know, it's gonna be a hit.
@@JohnSmith-pu3pm When is it coming out? Where will we be able to see the rulebook or a teaser?

Oh man, that upside down Arkham Horror Box... it burns!!! (8:12)
Good to see you all back behind the table.
Great to have you back!
Yay you're back, good to see you girls!
Nice new intro w/ the clay! Love it! Thanks for doing Exodus! So on a knee jerk reaction; if I had to buy TI or Exodus PC, which should i buy?!

Great review, and I love the new intro!
Yay I missed you guys!
Excelent intro. Nice video. Great to see you back. When will you release review of Robinson Crusoe?
Love the new intro/outro Joanna :)
Thank you! :)
And the new hair apparently :)

Glad to see you again. Will you be doing a review on Warhammer diskwars in the future?
Welcome back!
Yay, new video!
Welcome back
The music is all nervous sounding like a chase is happening or a battle is ensuing. They're just talking about a game! :P
finally , i missed the channel
How is this compared to Eclipse? Just recently got that and love it. If you had to chose one....

Thanks for coming back on that :)
Component quality high? not if you got screwed into getting the original!!!
Kaja jesteś najlepsza :) zagrałbym z Tobą we wszystko ;)
Based on this review/walkthrough, I am buying this game ;)
this comment was 5 years ago. did you end up buying it? did you like it?
Is it working good as a two player game?
I missed you. I was so tired of Vasel's face...

HAHA. Well, then I stand Corrected.

That's an encounter, not exploring territory. I know what you're saying, but that is a pretty broad definition of "exploration."
Offshoot of twilight?
Look at all those copies of BSG in the background :P
Looks like this is one of those games that is better with >2 players.
Joanna :)
