Cheers for all the comments everyone! I think I have to mention that I'm always mainly basing my reviews from a studio cut version because the area I'm most knowledgeable about really is music production. That's why I always watch the music/lyric videos for my first impression for songs and I hope you can all understand why! :) I would however, like to notify you all that I will watch the live performance live tomorrow over on Twitch (link on my channel) along with all the other songs from Festival da Cancao! So please join me for that if you're interested! :)
It’s so annoying to see so many useless reaction channels when they don’t understand music and I can’t call it reaction at all and yet they have more subs than you. You deserve so much more than 4.9k. The knowledge and effort you put on every reaction is pleasant to watch. Great job. PS. You tube is not fair.
Groot is definitely among the top 2 most interesting ESC reaction channels, but I super disagree with the idea that you need to be musically apt to make good reactions. As ridiculous as their taste can be, their reactions aren’t any less important. After all, the bulk of people who will tune into the show and vote won’t be musically educated. There’s a lot more to the package than just the musical strengths; there’s visual identity, styling, delivery, staging and lighting, lyricism, and hype. These are all things that some other channels focus on a lot more than Groot does.
I DO love when on stage she utters her scream (Grito), the dancers (who represent her fears, her anger, her anguish) arch their backs and seem to be overcome, they die and she finds herself alone, strong. Stunning!
The depth of critique you offered on the instrumental/production approach was amazing, and it's the reason I always look forward to your reactions more than any others in this space. Really interesting. I'm surprised, by the way, that you didn't watch this live considering how much you enjoyed FdC last year.
@@groot1421Fun. I wonder what you'll think. I personally didn't vibe with a lot of the songs this year, but I imagine you'll enjoy them more than I did.
OMG Groot Portugal is my current winner this year. Her live performance is so powerful and magical that I have chills when watching in for the 1st time. Love loads of songs from their NF as well, they did not disappoint and I just love Grito so much !!!
the music was cowritten by Luar, he has in his channel a video with the production process, called "we made a song for Eurovision (iolanda - Grito) 🇵🇹"
I LOVE that she chose to end it like that. The first time I listened to it and she did that long note I expected a tom hit to go into a grand sounding final chorus with a bunch of backing vocals. Going with this instead is so much more impactful. Even more so in the live performance.
I didn't enjoy Portugal's entry last year so this is definitely a nice bounceback from them. I noticed a lot of the comments urging you to check out the live performance, rather than just focus on the studio cut. I know why you do this, but the point is those comments is fair. I think this track is intended to be accompanied by the on-stage visuals to fully capture the artistic vision. I have no doubt you'll like it even more after seeing it. Having said that, I completely agree with your analysis of the studio version. The vocal track is the priority and, honestly, had the whole thing been delivered a cappella or solely with that one singular acoustic stringed instrument throughout, I don't think it would have lost much at all. I also had problems picking out individual instrumental inputs when they started introducing them and found the overall sound quite cluttered. There's probably about 45 seconds in the middle of the song where it loses me, but it does bring me back when they cut the instrumental out for the big scream part. Overall, I think this is a great entry for Portugal, and a good studio track.
I deffo encourage you to watch/listen to her live performance in FdC offcamera, it reaaally elevates the song to another level imo! always love hearing your professional music critiques, excited for more reactions 🤍
It makes total sense that your reaction is first the music lyric audio video. Obviously, we are all expecting the reaction of the live performance.. Last year with Mimicat, you were disappointed with the live performance in Eurovision, and you were right. With Iolanda is a completely different game. Her live voice and performance make the song.
Thank you for understanding! I feel much more confident reviewing studio cuts because sometimes the sound mix in a national final can hold back the finished product. I'm ecstatic to see iolanda's performance though! Will be streaming all of the Festival da Cancao songs on Twitch! :)
I think the live version is much cleaner. Also the burst makes sense since the song is called scream and it builds to the scream and then fades back to a restful peace.
There are compositions that are born from emotional contexts/concepts. This is the case. There are only 2 ways if you want to understand the melodic line and the instrumental and backvocals options: analyze the lyrics or see the performance on stage. It's a whole new experience. As if it were a soundtrack from a short filmed story.
I was so looking forward for your review. I have to say, this year I struggled with the selection and to me she was a worthy winner. I was also a fan of Joao Borsh with “rebento pelas costuras”. One that I really liked was from Huca “pé de choro” was a tribute to Sara Tavares that represented Portugal in 1994. Now, festival da cancao would not be festival da cançao without some experimental track, and Maria Joao, she is a very known vocalist, presented us this year with “Dia” these last 2 did not go to the final, although I would have love to see it there. Ah, there was another interesting one with Filipa “you can’t hide” it was the second favourite to win in the studio version, but the delivery was really not there (voice was ok but no staging) and it didn’t go through to the final. Cheers
So glad to see you react to this song. I had a different favourite going into Festival da Cancao but this year's NF had a lot of amazing songs so it was difficult to choose a favourite. Btw, I love your jacket!! Oh and you mentioned highlighting songs that you should check... definitely check out Criatura by Rita Onofre!

Portugal chose he best option. her voice is beautiful, the first note just immediately sent chills down my spine, her voice is beautiful, I love her styling, the contemporary dancing is so atmospheric and perfect, the staging is restrained yet beautiful, the Portuguese in the lyrics is beautiful, I was on tue edge of crying the whole time it was on, I love the instrumental, I love that it is so intimate and simple to really let the vocal glide over the top and shine, the song is dramatic in the best way, the progression of the song is beautiful and haunting, it just invites you into its grasp and never lets you go for the whole 3 minutes, it is so atmospheric and beautiful and it is just such a powerful song. I can’t fault this entry. It is incredible and will do amazingly in the juries (it won’t win but it is a sure jury top 5) and the televote will love this because it is one of the only ballads this year that does its things incredibly and people will just be so moved and stuck be it like I was and just have to vote for it. Overall it has strong chances to end top 10 and it is a locked qualifier 100%. This is a 10/10 for me and it is in my top 10 of this incredible year, I truly don’t know how I’ll survive Eurovision week so many good songs will be robbed for sure.
Always look forward for your reactions. I would love to see your reaction to Huca Pe de Choro (didn’t make the final not sure why) but I absolutely loved it!

while i appreciate the atmosphere of this one, particularly in the first verse, i haven't clicked with it overall, especially the chorus, which i don't feel the purpose of (although it still retains the strong atmosphere). In FdC, it was only my 16th out of 20. because the national final was super strong as always - there are many to keep an eye of in FdC (pé de choro, change, ... pelas costuras, casa portuguesa, o farol) just to name a few, but Dia is my favourite of the whole season and it's not even cloae
This was one of my picks back when we only had the audios. However, when you see the live performance the song blossoms into full-blown artistic cohesion. - BTW Groot, you look so so tired in this clip. Do try to get more sleep. We need a fit and healthy reviewer. 😉

I had been waiting for this reaction since the song was chosen Saturday night, but then I was terribly disappointed and stopped watching after a minute because, in this case, only a reaction to the live performance does the entry justice imo. 😒
I was looking forward to seeing your reaction to the Portuguese song 😊 It's always good to receive your opinion, because it's sincere and enlightened. I think the live performance really elevated the song. The use of contemporary dancers to symbolize Iolanda's inner demons and moment of liberation gave a unique dimension to the music. Her live version on the stage on festival da Canção elevates so much the song and her final scream (Grito) is so powerful.
It does. It’s a 2 in 1 🖤
