Man I wish I could play Dragon quest 11 but the trumpetty soundtrack and cheerfulness and dramatic wind instruments sounding like a school band all the time turned me off and I couldn't keep up with it.
Ngl, I was rather underwhelmed when the big bad sent the world to sh1t. The whole scene was great but the music was very cartoonish which took away from the seriousness of the event. It was like watching OG Dragon Ball. I guess that's DQ standard though -shrug
To be fair, that's always been like that throughout every Dragon Quest games and I can see it's not for everyone. As much as I love the franchise, I do feel like they needed to make more tracks rather than just not having more than 20 songs. Otherwise, it can be annoying to listen and might ruin people's interest in the franchise. It doesn't bothered me personally. But I can understand it might be bothering you.
There's a fantastic music mod for the PC version of DQ11 that makes it a lot more pleasant to listen to. Incorporates a lot of the best songs from prior haha in the series. Pretty easy to install, too.

Really enjoyable list! Octopath 2 had no right to be this good! Im currently playing Persona 4 Golden while my bf is playing Royal and im lowkey jealous he gets to experience the royal edition as his first experience with the game. When i will have played Royal, i’ll have officially played all the definitive editions of persona 3-5
Glad to see the honorable mention of Astral chain. While my top 3 is very similar to yours, I always try to tell people how amazing Astral Chain is. As a huge Fire Emblem fan, you know Astral Chain is good when it beat out FE3H as my game of the year when it came out.
The only two on this list I haven't finished are Octopath and Astral Chain. Maybe it's time to change that. Also props for putting Sky FC as the Kiseki rec, it really is imperative to play Kiseki in order

I picked up Tales of Arise recently - I'm 15 hours in and still loving it. I'm ready for the story to pick up a little, but I've also been taking time to grind and do any side content. Good call out for Astral Chain. I binged my way through that game. I thought they announced a sequel....? I'm interested to see how that comes out, I just don't want it on the OG Switch because the graphics deserve a little more fidelity.
This year has finally witnessed the long anticipated collapse of the live service gaming model. There has been a huge refocus on top quality single player offline experiences. There is a kind of renaissance going on in the JRPG genre, since these series have been delivering that top flight single player world experience for a couple of decades now.
Nice to see 7 Remake making one of these lists. I think I need to see the next 2 parts before I can decide where it goes on my list (need to make sure they don't mess up the story somehow). Incredible game though.

Great list. I loved Chrono Cross. That was justa banger for me. As for other JRPG, I also liked Breath of Fire 2 and Final Fantasy VIII. Though the last one is because it was my very first Final Fantasy 😅. Still, I loved the story and the cinematics were amazing. I loved Rinoa and Squall’s story.
I liked so much about DQ11, but got to a point where I had to put it down so I wouldn't have to listen to that single overworld track one more time. The music was repetitive, low quality, and didn't fit the environment. It ruined the game for me. I even tried going spans of turning off the game audio and listening to something else.
To be fair, that has been the franchise's weak point is that it plays the same soundtrack in most of the games. When you hear them for the first time, it's great. But when u hear it again for like the 50th time, u would think they could've added more tracks into the game; old or new. It's not like other RPG'S like Final Fantasy and such where they have alot of tracks they played to where u can enjoyed them. Even if they played the same track again, it doesn't overstated it's welcome as DQ has. I liked orchestrated music. But there's needs to be more than that. As much as I love Dragon Quest, I do think it's time for the old composer to retired and yet someone make more tracks.
Great list! Just got a steam deck OLED so I’m trying to play a grip of stuff on a handheld bc I don’t feel like playing these on a console w a tv. Just chillin in bed on the couch. Idk where to start… maybe chrono trigger.
Great list, the trails series in particular is also amazing for the incredible world and character building that grows through 10 whole games from trails in the sky 1 all the way to the more recent trails in reverie.
I was looking to get into the trails series, but the community hit me with a huge amount of backlash that it was absolutely unacceptable not to start from the beginning. Since I don't have access to even a poor quality PC, because I don't own one at all, just all the current gen consoles and my phone, I wrote that one off. There are a ton of other great series to play and I don't want to feel like I'm getting half an experience or have everyone on the forums roast me for a simple question about where to start.
@@Jeremus717 I bet you could start with Trails from Zero and be just fine. It is on Switch. You would be missing the Sky arc, but it is probably better to play what you can, and get started on the series. I hope you give it a chance! I don't know, I really love JRPGs but I really don't like persona for this boring social simulations. The character are great, the dungeons awesome and the gameplay (in the dungeons) top. But I can't get through the college/live simulation ... it is just a waste of time

That’s hard to say, there is some life sim stuff there that’s required but it doesn’t bring down the pacing. For the most part you can do them when you want. They directly affect the moment to moment gameplay as well so you may find yourself excited for a social encounter to unlock a new ability etc.
Trails of the Sky blew me away. I play jrpgs, but I am not a die hard. I just wasn’t expecting to like that game sooo much. I was so into it that the crazy amount of text reading didn’t drive me away (honestly, that normally would, lol). Anyway, cool list.
ff7 remake is great but i played the og after beating it and i think its much better, mainly because the remake only covers midgar. however i imagine part 2 and 3 will easily top the original for me.
Great list, Tales of Arise sigh I have to wait I'm rocking Switch now. Dragon Quest is what am playing & I just can't stick to it like say Octopath & yea the music not helping. Astral Chain is awesome but has some cons though I do want a part 2 & I'll reply part 1 with the sister in time. I'll get Persona 5 royal later I already beat it on ps3.
I replayed it about 5 months ago. Not as good as I remember but still not bad. I really hate the robot place where they had to pass laws so you could progress.
Great Vid! but DQ11 on 10 though? it at least deserves to be in Top5 or Top3 as it was THE first real Japanese RPG and i honestly prefer the SMT series over P5 and would always Choose P3 or Digital Devil Sage over Persona 5 but that's just my personal bias cause P5 has been kinda salvaged a LOT the last years imo xD
The main reason why persona five is so popular is because it's a lot of people's first persona game while doing that whole trope of friend power. I prefer persona 2 as it's darker AND the music was insanely catchy. I do prefer smt overall as well. People get turned off cause of the atmospheric feeling they give and not as story oriented.
nice to meet a fellow trails in the sky fc enjoyer. I've played every currently localized game, and I think sky fc is STILL my favorite, a relatively unpopular opinion.
@@jchief40 If you like ugly style I don't care, it doesn't stop being ugly because of it. But don’t turn the conversation to discussing your interlocutor, it’s not ethical.
You know Arise won rpg of the year at the game awards right? If anything id call it overrated. I love the tales series but like halfway through arise it changed and started to drag on and on and on. It left me disappointed.
I've played Trails in the Sky; fun, but I like the first half of the Cold Steel arc better. (I say first half because the second Class VII was a monumentally stupid idea.) The Legend of Dragoon is good but not great. Chrono Trigger I tried, but got bored before I could get very far. FFVII "remake" has already mangled the original story. Persona 5 Royal, I'll stick with the original; Maruki is completely unnecessary and diminishes the epic original finale, Yoshizawa was badly tacked on (and should have been Kasumi for real; Sumire is the personification of bland), and TOO MUCH AKECHI. They should have confirmed his death and been done with it.

Trails of the Sky blew me away. I play jrpgs, but I am not a die hard. I just wasn’t expecting to like that game sooo much. I was so into it that the crazy amount of text reading didn’t drive me away (honestly, that normally would, lol). Anyway, cool list.
When suikoden 1 & 2 remasters comes out. Give it a chance 2 is considered as one of the best jrpg of all time.
Great list. Huge fan of Legend of Dragoon. My top pick is Super Mario RPG. Both these games I enjoyed the timed attacks.
Welcome to the world of Trails! Azure is my favorite in the series so I hope you're enjoying it! Can't wait for Trails through Daybreak!
ff7 remake is great but i played the og after beating it and i think its much better, mainly because the remake only covers midgar. however i imagine part 2 and 3 will easily top the original for me.
Rebirth looks great! Can’t wait to dive into that one.
If you make more top 10 JRPGs lists then i will subscribe to you ok bro so yeah keep it up gg
XC3 is one of the best games I've played in a LONG time.
No Xenogears, even in honorable mentions. Me Sadge
I love Xenogears!
Respectfully, Legend of Dragoon was mid for me. Definitely not awful.
Good shit.
xenoblade is a snoozefest
The Legend of Dragoon is a gray mediocrity, it has no place in any tops.
HD2D style is inconsistent and disgusting no matter how you look at it.
disagree with you majorly on HD2D, and you have a lot of growing up to do as well
@@jchief40 If you like ugly style I don't care, it doesn't stop being ugly because of it. But don’t turn the conversation to discussing your interlocutor, it’s not ethical.
I'm surprised you used Devil May Cry as an insult when describing Final Fantasy XVI yet had Astral Chain as a honorable mention.
I feel like ff7 remake voice acting ruined it for me. So much unnecessary moaning and grunts.
Ys Viii Lacrimosa of Dana is better than Xenoblade Chronicles.
What about Xenogears ????
