I first heard of Masini in 1952 when at age 15, I purchased my first opera La forza del Destino and was and continue to be impressed by this underrated singer and this recording remains my favorite of that opera. He does fine in this lyric aria from La Boheme.
Thank you so much for the posting which allowed me to discover this magnificent voice. He doesn't suffer by comparison with anyone, even if (childishly) I have always taken Björling as my absolute reference for this aria. There is something really unique in Masini's singing. I would call it pathos for want of a more accurate word.
Non conoscevo questo (a mio parere) grandissimo tenore dotato anche di una eccellente dizione al punto che solo il grande Pippo Di Stefano poteva accostarsi. Purtroppo le televisioni pensano a trasmettere ogni sorta di cavolate e mai programmi di cultura lirica per farci conoscere i grandi artisti del passato purtroppo dimenticati.
Masini is a true spinto voice. Genuine spinto real viril tenor. Far from lyric but he has that tremendous upper register because he does not push the middle or low voice. In fact he lightens his voice.
When he appeared in Covent Garden in the Thirties he had received rave reviews in Italy, but he was probably the most disappointing Tenor ever to make a debut, totally out of tune, Gigli was also in that season and they both sang Chenier, Masini was constantly being prompted and even there were people in the wings trying to help, Bellezza gave up in the 2nd Act and said in Italian Galliano what is wrong, he just shrugged his shoulders walked off and totally was lost, it was Gigli who came back stage and helped him, he finished the Opera but he was not in any form at all, sad, a wonderful voice, but no temperament and nerves of glass, Gigli finished his performances that Season, he did come back in 1938 six years later and was a success in Tosca, but ruined that success, by giving the Fascist Salute at the end of the performance, how sad he had the voice but the brain was somewhere else.

Un vero Livornese ed un grande Artista che fu stimato anche da Beniamino Gigli. Bisognerebbe ricordarlo più spesso.

Questo si chi he un grande cantante , che leone. Quale canta cosi oggi ? Nessuno. Per me un piacere immenso di avere potuto udire quest'incizione.

Schipa era un tenore leggero.
The timbre has a similar quality to it. Masini’s has a more virile quality though
