Reality, The Next Day, and Heathen are SO GOOD. It is rare that an artist who started in the '60s can keep producing such amazing work in the later era of their career.

@@glovishlyTbh, I think noBowie album is "necessary" before Blackstar (it was my fisrt Bowie), but context does matter. And I do think Diamond Dogs is important context, specially for the shift in vocal texture from the glamy treble nasal voice of the early years to the deep and dark tone of the letter. Also a concept album with the closest Bowie got to doing "heavy" music, I could compare the production to something like Igor, where it intentionally wants to sound kinda screwed up. And come on, Sweet Thing, We Are The Dead, 1984, these are all bangers.

  • @Klui_
    @Klui_ Місяць тому +3

Teenage Wildlife is one of the best Bowie songs of all time, at times I feel it's my favorite ever, it's so strong, so dramatic, so powerful.
With your question about It's No Game part 1 and 2, I personally feel like the difference represents how when you first find out about the corruption of the world, you're young, you're full of energy and fire, and you scream for change and for something better, but as you grow older and see the same exact problems, you get jaded, you still feel the same about these problems, but you got less edge to protest them, you've gotten tired, and so you grow quieter. That's my interpretation at least.

Such a great Bowie record. Hard to believe it came out right after the Berlin trilogy stuff. Such a cool change of pace.

What I love about Fashion is how it works with its thematics. It's so repetitive that, whenever the thing you are expecting to happen doesn't happen, it kinda catches you off guard. Like when he says "Turn to left" and you expect him to say "turn to the right" like he said before, but he just says nothing. And you're like "I was caught by fashion, always expecting the same".

    recs:
The Postal Service - Give Up (Perfect indietronica album with the singer from Death Cab for Cutie)
Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (Insanely badass aura filled production and vocals, extremely unique)
Weezer - Pinkerton (Some of the nicest sounding guitar/drums/everything you'll hear in 90s alt rock, with crazy honest lyrics, ended up inspiring some emo bands)
The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music)
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me (amazing ahead of its time 1987 alt/noise rock)
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi)
Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips)
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
Heavy emphasis on Pinkerton, there's basically no good reactions to it!!!

You could totally go to Blackstar next, but you're missing a couple of key pieces of the early Bowie jigsaw that kind of informed it - Hunky Dory is full of great individual songs and Aladdin Sane is Ziggy x100. He has lots of other brilliant albums - Diamond Dogs, Let's Dance, Outside, Lodger, Young Americans, you'll find people in the comments recommending all of those as their favourite, and there are more - but whilst they're all really good, personally I'd say only Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane are genuinely essential to round out your picture of the man who made Blackstar.

Great reaction! If you’re trying to get to Blackstar I suggest skipping his ‘80’s and ‘90’s output and jump ahead to Heathen from 2001, then 2013’s The Next Day + Extras and finally Blackstar. After Scary Monsters he grew very bored with making music and sick of the music industry and it shows. In the ‘90’s he struggled to regain his rep as an innovator, which he’d destroyed in the ‘80’s, but those albums strain with the effort and come off as very forced imo. Heathen is more relaxed. Like he accepted his best was behind him and as a result produced a few late career classics. A Reality is unlistenable, but that’s my subjective opinion. I think it’s godawful. The Next Day + Extras was a thrilling comeback after a decade of silence and Blackstar a final masterpiece. He made his dying into a work of art.

All the recommendations are great, but I think you’re going to find Young Americans interesting. Listen man, before all the Bowie boys freak with this suggestion, my favourite Bowie LPs are Station and Low, but Young Americans is just great, and if you think about it, Bowie’s greatest artistic risk (more than Low). In between the post-glam, proto-Goth of Diamond Dogs and the pre-Berlin Euro soul of Station, Bowie goes and records a soul LP with the cream of NY’s up and coming black soul musicians. All in the middle of a major US tour promoting Diamond Dogs and at the height of his coke habit…emaciated, zonked, and sooo white. He pulls it off. It’s this you should listen to before Blackstar as it really gives you an idea of just how much Bowie went his own way. Anyway, it’s smooth as fuck…

as much as it pains me not to ask for Tracey Denim by Bar Italia, Hunky Dory by Bowie is super essential. one track on it was the #2 single on RYM at one point. honestly you can probably check out Aladdin Sane off camera

Not sure if this is how you take suggestions on board, but please do “Stadium Arcadium” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Cheers😄
