The bass riff during the verses of this song is absolutely unreal. So freaking groovy; just makes you want to get up and dances/start moving your hips. Seriously, pay attention to it, and please by all means try to convince me otherwise.
I got to sit with Johnny/Old School around 2001ish and play his bass all mic'd up at the Van Alden arena in Grand Rapids Michigan after their sound check. He let me play his Ibanez basd. that arena holds maybe 8,000 ppl. Tool also played there, so you know its a proper arena and FUCK!!!!!! Hearing my playing coming through that sound system was OTHER WORDLY! Im a guitarist but still, Johnny's set up sounds fuckin great! Of course I rocked the opening of Mudshovel and i felt like I was hearing the guitar for the first time in my life. If you wanna hear a fuckin amazing bass line, In the Meantime from Space Hog, the bass player us the singer and the groove he plays WHILE SINGING is so damn impressive I never get tired of hearing it! Theres also a guy who does bass covers and he covers Mudvaynes Death blooms, that is awesome and the timing changes in that song are just soooo sick!!!
@@kustomhooligans That's an awesome story. Staind has always been one of my favorite rock bands. Them, Korn and Deftones. But you just can't beat early Staind. IMO they were not just "another one of the nu-metal" bands. They definitely had a unique sound with Mike Mushok using obscure baritone guitar tunings that no one had ever really used before at the time, mixed with Johnny's great bass playing, Jon Wysocki is an incredibly underrated drummer, and then you top it with Aaron's memorable voice, and yeah like I said IMO they just stood out to me among the rest. Dysfunction is one of the greatest albums of all time. Break the Cycle had its big hits obviously. But I always thought Staind's album 14 Shades of Grey is one of the best ever. Just about every single song on that CD is phenomenal. Anyhow, thank you for that awesome story you shared about playing Johnny's bass!
I agree with Zach and a handful of others here- Staind is somewhat, especially in this time now, and underrated band. They soared on music charts with singles and hit songs in the late 90s and through the early 00's, but honestly didn't get enough credibility, aside of worthy nominations and some music award wins. "Suffocate," is to this day, and will always remain one of my favorite all-time Staind songs.
oh man, when the chorus part is going crazy and there is all this sonic chaos, at 0:50 Aaron bows his head down with his eyes closed like an Indian Sadhu bowing down to mediate, it is such a somber and powerful gesture, damn the camera work is absolutely fantastic on this pro shot!
Tbh I just don't get how Aaron can stand quiet while the song explodes with such energy. In my head, the first time I saw this video, I thought he was going to do some screams during those explosions of the song, as, for example, Chester Bennington did live. Still a fucking kickass performance, don't get me wrong!
I think it's really fucking cool tbh, I never seen it before. To me it seems like he's focusing on his own performance, maybe moshing about would hinder it
nope, aaron said, 'he could never take part in what had killed so many of his heros' he was on valium for ages, probably why he is alot slimmer in 1996-1999

Those dark growling screams haunt you to your very core. So dark and raw. The best live performance of this song I've heard to date.
I would have loved to see this Staind live. They were so raw with their stuff from Dysfunction.
