In order to be nominated for Best Picture, a film has to comply with the Academy's rules governing release of said film within Los Angeles within a specific time period. This film did not qualify.

    • @jacobskinner3522

RAHbert503 Fanny and Alexander did qualify for Best Picture as far as exhibition requirements are concerned; otherwise, it would not have earned the nominations and wins it did. You are right, however, that it was not eligible for Best Picture. During this period, foreign language films submitted for Best Foreign Film were ineligible for Best Picture nominations.

@@basti8084 The original draft was quite long (over 300 minutes), so it was first cut and released as a 188-minute film, and only later was the full draft separated into episodes and shown in Sweden as a miniseries. Actually it was not about the complications of family life; it was about toxic religiosity...and it's destructive role in family life too.
I am not an atheist, and I find this film to be a very brave move on the role of religion when it goes against what we today seem to have forgotten the value of: The Human Rights Declaration. Yes, therein one is given the right to religious practice - but what when the religious practice violates the rest of the Human Rights mentioned in the same document?
We are allowed to express our justifiable concerns today - but JUST where it comes to two religions; Judaism (very much so criticised ao in the UN), and Christianity.
About time this RIGHT to put a critical light is extended to all religions, and their practices where they infringe national jurisprudence and legislation.
