  • In this DRR episode, I highlight 3 popular camping items that I thought would be game-changers but ended up being game-ruiners. Trigger warning: Some of these items are very popular among the Bushycrafters. All this and more, while the crew and I camp cliffside at a pristine primitive campsite nestled almost 7500 feet above the city folk below. Welcome to the reset!

Re: The silky saw. First up, I've not owned one. I have a similar Gerber version with a shorter and less flexible blade.
But I will defend Japanese steel and build quality. That business of cutting on the backstroke is a Japanese thing. Their wood planes are used that way too.
When it comes to cutting tools, the Japanese make something for everything.
Point taken. This is an arborists saw which will usually be cutting wood with sap / water. I like my shorter more stout Gerber, though I have snapped a blade on that too.
Some adaptation in recognising technique solves it. I snapped my blade by being impatient and forcing the tools limits with some sideways pressure / torque.
P.s. .... If I'm camping out of my truck I find a quality, large size anvil pruner is great for quick and easy processing of dry wood up around an inch or more which is great for my small folder fire.

That cot is just a civilian copy of a military cot. That's how cots were designed for years and years, and is still how military cots are to this day. Yeah they can be a little aggravating when new, but they aren't all that bad and they do get quite a bit easier after using them a few times and letting the fabric stretch and settle. They are designed to be more of a durable and long term use cot. They aren't great for weekend camping trips. If you want easy you gotta get one of those fancy new UL backpacking cots with the levered snap on legs. I have a few different ones and they are pretty nice, and very easy and quick to setup.

I'll look into the UL cot Jesse! Thanks!

Those military style cots are great if you’re base camping for a few days and not concerned about weight or bulk. With use it will get a little easier to pop the spreader in. Having to put one up and take one down everyday overlanding? Not worth the trouble. We’ve got the Gazelle T4, 3 years with no complaints. It’s held up well. You just have to get used to the D style doors.

I never thought about that James! I bet the more I use it, more it will break in and be easier. Thanks!

The worst part of that style cot (and there are many different brands that use it) is the hair trigger release on the tension bars. The slightest brush against them and they pop apart.

You know my thoughts on the Coleman! You saw me with it, and then I had a camper!

OMG, I have had the same problem with my old cot. I finally invested in a much easier to put up cot from Amazon.

The tent is shit, I’ll give you that. Lack of skills on the cot and saw, though. There is nothing wrong with either, you just have to master your tools.

I have one kislux bag I got in 2019, it's the LV white catogram speedy. It's counter quality and it has a nice honey patina now, so the leather is real. I think whatever makes you happy go for it. I've seen LV with plastic leather and blood red glaze...

First of all....don't be hatin on my ferro rods. Haha! And I second the overhype on Silky. My silky pocketboy tip snapped off within a few uses. Its just too fragile. Im glad you reviewed this tent..it was next on the list. Hard pass! AWESOME video, my friend. Glad to see the guys back at it.

I feel your pain and torment on the cot. Just wait until you are 76......ain't gonna happen. I relieved my anxiety by pulling the trigger on the Teton Universal XL Camp Cot with Pivot Arm. What a game changer. It is so easy to set up. Granted it is a beast, coming in at 24# but it is the only way to go when car camping. I notice you are not griping about that king of a chair. Man, what is that? Such a beautiful campsite. I am from Louisiana and we are just fixing to get some decent camping temps. It has been brutal. Great video...I subbed.

Thanks Wayne! The chair is a luxury item, but I did go through quite a few different styles befire settling on that one. I'll look into that Teton cot! Thanks!

Another great video. On the Silky products, I think I saw someone on UA-cam actually break theirs. I think they were doing a comparison and don't think they intended to break it, but it happened.
Tent's are difficult to find. I love my REI tent, but it's a backpacking tent. Has to be staked out which is not all that enjoyable here in Arizona because the ground is either to soft or to hard.

If you see an influx of reviews on a particular brand- there's a reason. They aren't looking for reviewers to improve the product, just to sell it for them.

Hows the camping in South Africa?

    • @warren6899
      @warren6899 27 днів тому

@@DirtRoadReset South Africa is one of the most spectacular countries to live in, with many different trails to do..
However our crime rate and severe violent crime make boondocks g almost not worth the while, so you kina stuck to going to established resorts.
Stealth camping is an option, but you need to be ultra careful, which takes the pleasure out of that. Our gear is mostly Chinese crap imports, as the retail market is overwhelmingly dominated by mass mart owned by Wal-Mart,, so good gear is either exorbitantly expensive thanks to our junk status currency, or you have to jump at second hand gear, of which there is quite a bit going right now as people with resources are selling up and getting out.
Resort camping"s great, wonderful climate, spectacular scenery... just be warned, one hell of a lot of highly venomous insects / anacrids / snakes and other delightful friends that will happily make your home theirs, OH don't forget the maleria carrying mosquito, the cause of more deaths than any other single creature in the world.... So no tarp camping, you secure your sleep zone..... given all of that I cannot describe to you, the african night sky, you just gotta come here and experiance our world.... it will leave you forever changed
