Great video. Very important to remember to drill your holes at a slightly downward angle so water can run out. Also, drill the holes blind (not all the way through to the other side. Happy crafting! Do you part and save our insects.
Really encourage anyone providing best sites for solitary bees to use layered blocks that can be opened up and cleaned out each year once the bees have hatched, otherwise are inviting parasites and disease into the nest the following year. Alternatively make sure to refresh the tubes each year.
Really nice looking bug hotel! I recommend having a decent overhang over the front of the unit to keep the rain off. Doesn't matter if you hang it under the eves of your shed of course!
Have a look at the pneumatic Leinggg de-nailing guns. Available on Amazon , very slow delivery but really good at extracting nails from separated pallets
I like the hotel. Maybe the roof should overhang at the front a little as the rain may get into the wood shavings (or whatever is put there),. making them damp, flat, and soggy. Even bugs like to keep dry!
Really enjoyable Matt. It was very nearly a hand tool only build. Think you missed an opportunity there. But saying that, I wouldn't have done all those bandsaw cuts by hand!
Looks great mat. However, I won’t be looking at making one in my neck of the woods. Yesterday I had to get rid of a funnel web spider from the lounge/dining area, and almost every cranny is already occupied by some kind of spider.
That's a nice project Nearly no material costs and lots of fun making it. Thanks for sharing. Could you please put a link to one or more nature/natural websites where we can learn something what bugs are attracted by which kind of fillings?
Till 6 days ago I'd never heard of a bug house (shame on me) and now they even sell them at LIDL (at least in Slovakia, but I guess in other countries as well) Of course home-made are the best.
A word of caution, I built a bug bungalow last year and packed it tight with bits of cane and sticks. It looked like a treat and I told my wife, see that's how to do woodwork properly. Of course, I built it dry in my workshop, but when it was outside and damp everything expanded - didn't just blow off the bl**** doors but the roof, walls, floor the lot - leave it to the kids and stick with lapped dovetails and fox wedged tenons instead.
Great stuff. I just wanted to let you know for transparency, I’m currently working an a similar how to make video. Not finished yet, but wanted to let you know that I’m not copying. Cheers
Hey Matt, great bug hotel make, really like it. Just one thing, maybe look at the lens of the camera more, not the screen. Otherwise keep up the good work. Would you recommend any other UK based makers on YT, who else do you follow? Rich.
looks cool but unfortunatly the spacings aren't deep enough for most insects and most bee species. keep in mind to clear all materials 2 years around to prevent the spreding of deceases.
If I was to put one on my house, they would eat my whole house, we have veracious insects where I live, I have at least 10 trees in my yard eaten by termites, there was a giant nest under one of them next to my shed and they've eaten my retain walls to dust.

That looks far better than some of the hotels I've stayed at!
Yes me too
This has really inspired me to make my own bug house I’m making one at school and you are giving me some really good ideas for my bug hotel.
Good luck with your build
Bugs & beasties an important part of hosting nature in the garden. Nicely done project.
Thank you
That is an aesthetic bullseye. Looks terrific.
Thank you very much
I love these simple, no nonsense builds + helping hand for nature 👍
Thank you Philip
Your content makes me happy I watch them every day
Nice and simple plus using otherwise wasted wood. Great for nature from all angles
Great looking Bug House! 🏠🐛🐞I made a few variations of these last year. They are now up in the garden waiting to be occupied.
Hope they fill up soon
That is a million star bug hotel . Cool project !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you

Great project and better built than the 'affordable housing' going up near me! Thanks for sharing it.
Haha thank you

Wow. Super bug house. Great job😃👍
As the King of the Bugs I only have one thing to say: Thank you Matt !
Thank you sir
It looks really nice, I need to make my self one of those.
Thank you
Hi Matt that's a 5 star hotel , once you start building them you get the bug ,keep up the good work ,G.
what fun! great as a native bee hotel here in Western Australia. ThanQ Matt!
Thank you
Nice project ,Matt
Excellent video, easy to follow and very informative. Many thanks for sharing

Great project Matt !
Thank you
Great little project
Thank you
That's really nice 😀
Lovely. This is craftmanship and the nicest bughouse I've seen. :)
You're a good man, Matt. 👌🏽
Nice and simple, and will work a treat. 👍🏽
Thank you Bill. I hope so
great little project
Thank you
Nice and easy to build.
Thank you
Nice job
It would be nice if you added the measurements of the back and sides thanks
Thats an awesome finger wound, I bet the air went blue when that happened.
Hi Matt excellent piece of construction, nice to see hand tools being used, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia.
Thank you very much Les
Hello Matt what a really good project I really like all your projects you do keep up the hard work
Thank you very much

Really interesting project build Matt, something for the kids to watch it become home for creepy crawlies. Tony
Thank you Tony
I would love to see your bugs in it. 😊
Great video
Thank you
Nice vid Matt! thats a nasty little cut you got there on your finger. I bet there was some choice words when that one hit!
Thank you. Yes there might have been
It looks nice, I'd like to try it. Did the bugs find and use it?

Great project Matt I’ll have to make one for the grandkids 👍🏻
Thank you. I’m sure they will love it
You should put the mesh over all of the sections as it stops birds pulling the sticks and, reeds and bamboo out to eat the bugs

Beautiful work, Matt! 😃
I confess, I've never heard of it! But I liked it, I'm going to search about it! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you. You too
Nice pry bar...
Very timely, have just what I need on hand. Know what I'll be doing in the next few days. Nasty looking nick on your finger btw.
Perfect time of year to do
Very nice job. I going to make one. But I see that not all the bamboos or stems are hollow. Will the bugs clean out what they intend to use ?
What a fab idea - I've got some pallets hanging around so might just do something similar.
Have to say the cut on you finger looks nasty!!
Perfect way to use them up
That demolition bar looks the bee's knees for ripping pallet boards off.
Yes it works well
Put mesh between two pieces of scrap wood drill larger holes. 👍👍👍
That's a nice project Nearly no material costs and lots of fun making it. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. Just search “making a bug house”

119. Thanks for the ideas, got all the materials now to start
Nice Bug hotel Matt. Remember though no guests until 17th May 😄
I will keep the doors locked until then

Hopefully it will be ok as it was made from pallets that had been outside.

Thank you. No problem, lots of videos out there about them
Fun little project. Thanks.
I was thinking about those shepherd huts recently. Are you building any recently ?
Are you interested in doing more?
Thank you. I just don’t have the space to do it at the new house
@@Badgerworkshop are you a fan of the west of Ireland at all? Surfing and such! Possible shepherd hut project for when its safe!
@@frederickwood9116 I have never been but looks a stunning area
Do you have any knowledge or guess if the pallets contain harmful pesticides and if that can make the inhabitants ill?
Good one. Any link for the craybar?
It’s under the video. Tools I use
Found it, thanks.
Where can i get that aluminum? What is is called?
Well, I don't say this often but "I hope you get bugs! "
Thank you. So do i
I made a bug hotel a few years ago. I must say yours looks a lot better than mine, now where is the check in desk?
It’s open for business
If it's a "hotel", how much do you charge the little fellers..?
It’s a bargain price
👌👌👌
im late but you need to make the holes on the sticks yourself right?
im trying to make one and im confused if i need to drill holes
Great hotel, how much per night?
Very cheap
Your local Council will charge you Business Rates on that Bug Hotel! 🐞🐝
I will keep it quiet

Man just a heads up you made the worst typo possible 😭😭😭

Couldnt be more timely!! Meant to be doing this with no 1 son at some point
Sounds a perfect family project
Gotta tell us about that finger gash 😧
I live in Australia and sometimes I feel like my ENTIRE HOUSE is a bug hotel! If only I could start charging them rent. 😀😀😀
You would be rich
Bunnings sell the bug hotels, not as fancy though...
