I just found your videos. This learn basics. I am older and have been sewing off and of for some years and have take some classes. I have some health issues , now 70 years old and really wanting to start again. I can not tell you how much I enjoyed you first basic video and intend to watch the rest. I have learned to much and so enjoy you down to earth teaching style and video. I am so thank ful for you taking the time to this for people who like to learn at home. Bless you darling.
I'm so happy to hear you found the channel. This is a teaching and learning channel, no fancy sales pitches or expensive tools to buy. I'm glad you getting back into sewing!
Want to thank you for the class and pattern for the gnome quilt a year ago. Got my quilt made and put in our county fair, got a blue ribbon. Thank you so much!!! Dorothy
My hubby’s (retired Army) Quilt of valor got me started in quilting. Picked up a kit when he received his QOV. The directions were Greek to me, so a couple of classes and practicing , I learned to do a rail fence with a panel. Ia year later, my first show and tell at out guild!
I'm not new to quilting but I know that I always learn new things in sew alongs & I like the pattern that you are doing so I I am joining you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
All of those tools are great, but if I am just starting out, or have financial restrictions, I’m going to start out with a lot fewer tools. With one or two rulers, one rotary cutter and cutting mat, and use my ironing board for pressing.
You're right! I try to show quilters how to make things with just a few basic tools rather than lots of specialty products. For most of my quilts I use a basic ruler, rotary cutter and some thread. For applique, I use freezer paper and thread.
I'm joining in on the fun! I like the way you make quilting fun and easy-peasy and I appreciate the hints on saving money & to make do with what we have. I've been quilting for a couple of years, since the pandemic, and your channel has become a favorite of mine. Hopefully, I can catch a live streaming of your video. Thank you!!!
also, for finger protection, attach a suction grip to your ruler so your hand is on the handle. can be purchased at harbor freight. I use it all the time as well as the 3lb weight.
So glad to have this series. Everyone always assumes you have a knowledge base. Are you going to cover how to read a quilting pattern? Thanks so much for doing this.
Cut a small piece from the red and the blue fabric. Dip them in hot water and set them on a paper towel - if you see bleeding of dye then treat them with retayne (all the reds in one batch - then all the blues in one batch). Use a bucket to treat them with retayne, rinse in plain water and hang them to dry.
Hi Ivonne, can you please tell me what weight of Aurifil thread you use please, and can you share the shade of Ivory and Grey that are your go to for quilting? I am not very good at selecting the appropriate colours that work best! Thank you,
I use Aurifil Mako 50 weight thread for block construction and 40 weight for quilting. My favorite colors are light beige 2310 or silver white 2309. I also use Dove Grey 2600, Bright White 2021, and Black 2692
Just came across this video and love it. I’m a self taught quilter always looking for suggestions/tips. Must ask , where did you get your short pink screw drivers. I’m looking for similar ones and love the pink. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of this series.

I am so happy I accidently found this video, and it is past the time that you made it. I went to the website, but I didn't find a place to get the pattern. I have been making quilt tops, for a while, but have stuck mostly to small size quilts. I am excited to learn more from you. How can I find the pattern? I did like this video and I did subscribe.

Retayne is a liquid cationic dye fixing agent. Retayne gets rinsed out before the fabric is dried. Unwashed fabric or untreated still has heavy metals are often used as part of the dyeing process and include antimony, cadmium, lead, mercury and chromium VI. Once absorbed by the body, these metals can accumulate in the liver or kidney and cause serious health problems. This is why I treat with retayne to prevent the dyes from bleeding and I rinse the fabric completely, then dry it. This reduces the amount of chemicals that I'm exposing myself to when I spritz with water and press during the quilt making process.
Also, I only use retayne on deep dyed fabrics such as navy, black or deep reds and batiks. I many cases I only use soap (syntropol) to wash my fabrics before sewing.

Hi Judy - I hope you will enjoy this series.

Hello there!

That's the plan!
Hello. A year later! Can’t find the handout! Very excited
I purchased red, white, and blue jelly rolls that have pinked (sp) edges. I think I should wash and use Retayne. What would you suggest?
Cut a small piece from the red and the blue fabric. Dip them in hot water and set them on a paper towel - if you see bleeding of dye then treat them with retayne (all the reds in one batch - then all the blues in one batch). Use a bucket to treat them with retayne, rinse in plain water and hang them to dry.

You said you pre wash fabrics because you don’t want to be exposed to chemicals yet you use Retayne which is a chemical.
Also, I only use retayne on deep dyed fabrics such as navy, black or deep reds and batiks. I many cases I only use soap (syntropol) to wash my fabrics before sewing.
@@JellyRollClub Thanks for explaining how Retayne works. It's not a product I've seen here in the UK so didn't know it washed out.
It was a great question and this series is designed to cover quilting from start to finish.
