The store isn't "set it and forget it." Him saying that tells me everything I need to know about their marriage. The wife runs the store, and the husband de-values all her labor. The wife works two full-time jobs so the family can have health insurance and private school tuition reduction, and she's sick of it, but her husband is giggling about it for some reason.

Yes there seems to be some "holes" in this story.
They seem to have a dream setup of incomes.
If the guy earns around 200k per year. Why is the wife doing do things.
Even if she hates working in the store. Working like 1, 2 days per month for 50k per year is very good still. She could grow that to 100k for maybe 5 days per month.

@@2ar2betrY I'm surprised Dave didn't challenge him on any of this story, as it doesn't really make sense. This guy makes 200k, running his own business, and refers to himself as in a "treadmill operator" phase. He also says that's how things have been for the past twenty years. I find it odd that after twenty years he hasn't figured out how to graduate from the treadmill phase, but has chosen to open an unrelated retail operation. Also he says his income has remained at this level the whole time. Okay. It would be much smarter to add on services for existing clientele, advertise to cast a wider net so he can charge more, take on employees so he can do more jobs and make more profit. I have no idea why someone who is busting their butt running their own business for 200k yearly wants to open an unrelated retail operation for 50k/year, as there is likely the potential for more profitability from his existing job, if he would focus.
Overall the household finances sounded chaotic messy and poorly run.

8 hours per month is a full time job?

@@davewhite756 lol no of course not. I might have been unclear in my original comment. To clarify: I don't believe the wife works 8hours/month at this alleged "set it and forget it" retail establishment. I believe she works far more than that and the husband merely ignores or discounts most of her labor.

I was five years deep into a two person operation and wanted more say in how the business was run. The boss wasn’t interested, so I quit. We both exercised our power.

Fun Fact: Robert Wood had a great idea to run a business called Montgomery ward better. He presented his idea to the bosses and they fired him. Later on he went on to Sears and they were more open to his ideas and put Wards out of business.

I would present the ideas as questions. Would it make any sense if we tried doing x? Present it in a way where they can feel like they thought it up.

Boomers are more likely to dismiss these kind of ideas because thier all internal esteem is driven from being "the boss". Younger bosses would love to hear your suggestions even if you are wrong and they will encourage you to keep providing ideas.

Every person --- at their worst --- sounds awfu, and you will get to see your life partner on her worst day. 😅 💞
In this case, it looks like they made decisions together that pushed her toward her limit, and her husband is not fully aware of the issue.
He claimed that she only works 8 hours a month, then said she's responsible for making decisions every time they go out for dinner! 😮
So that's a few hours of meetings at the expense of their marriage. Not a fair trade!
