Life As An Adult With Special Needs

  • How do adults with special needs deal with relationships and getting married? Can they hold regular jobs? What if they get in trouble with the law? These are the kinds of issues that 33-year-old Aidah and her mother must deal with, with the help of social workers from the Association for People with Special Needs (APSN).
Aidah, who has a lower-than-average IQ as well as physical disabilities, has been working at inclusive employer Burger King for more than 5 years, but never dared tell her colleagues about her disabilities for fear they'd stop being friends.
Her mother, meanwhile, worries about whether Aidah can handle independence - given her penchant for spending instead of saving money.

Society is much more challenging than living our day-to-day lives. Peoples attitudes can be the biggest barrier. I am visually impaired, and I travel alone, even to Singapore, since it is very easy to get around. I speak many languages, and I have had many experiences in life. I try to educate people, so the next time they meet somebody like me, they will have some understanding. I posted something on another video from channel is Asia, and somebody asked me, how I was able to write on a computer if I can’t see. I have made videos on my UA-cam channel about using technology as somebody who can’t see. All of the Apple devices come with built-in accessibility features for people with special needs, and there are many apps out there nowadays that can do things like link you up to volunteers who can see, and by using the video, they can help you with things like locating your keys, locating a shop, etc. There are also apps that will read text from Books to you, identify colors, there is a social network for people with special needs that was created by somebody whose brother has down syndrome. There are so many things nowadays… But unless you need them them, you don’t look for them.

Funny you should mention that. To force Aidah to save, her mum has confiscated her ATM cards, and controls her spending by giving her cash when needed.

It works now, but what will happen when her mother/father aren't there to help her? Aidah needs to learn, restricting her now will mean that she will spend everything in the future when no one is looking out for her. Her 'friends' will take advantage of that.
