- Tania Sachdev is India's top most chess commentator as on today. She is one of the official commentators of the Global Chess League 2023. On the eve of the event starting, she was asked by Prashant Raj, a well-known documentary director, on what is the vision of the Global Chess League Broadcast. Why is it being done on Television and on OTT platforms rather than well established chess broadcasting platforms like UA-cam and Twitch. Tania tries to explain the vision of Tech Mahindra in this video.

Tania is multi talented: great commentator , one of the greatest chess host ,way she host closing ceremony is amazing , great chess player represented Indian team in Olympiad many times. I cant think of anyone from chess fraternity having all these qualities , closest will be Sagar bhai itself 🙂

Those were her first words after waking up
Sanmay seems a nice crew person.
I dont know why the magnus team gives me rcb vibes
Champion batsmen but no good bowler type vibe
The boys r all solid, but the girls both low rating
Anand's team looking balanced
Guyz just focus on samay's face whole video. Its really entertaining 🤣🤣🤣

Samay throughout this video: "mera naam hai Ratan noooraaa..."

Her enthusiasm would save the world! Look at Peter and Judith as well . Unbounded enthusiasm, authenticity, presence - combined with reflection and competence. What a great culture in top level chess.

Hide all sanitizers from Bellatrix Lestrange. Joking. It's so nice to see Samay and Tania again. Making our excitement triple quadraple ...
They keep saying it will be on TV, it will be on TV, it is made for TV....but which TV channel will be showing it?
From what I can see, it seems like it's gonna be only on Jio Cinema which is an online platform, and one much inferior to youtube, as it has neither live playback nor full replay...
Al-Jazeera TV
Yeah, Tania's awsome.
Where will it be telecast in USA ? No information anywhere yet
Isn't it really one sided though? Magnus's team has too many strong players- Gukesh, Magnus, Arjun. They will easily win
Someone please tell me..from where to get that Samay's T-shirt.
Where to watch this from USA?
Loved it
Are channel ka naam number kuch to bta do, kidr aayega?
You can still watch kabaddi, football, etc. even if you don't know rules and figure out what's going on through commentary and on screen graphics. But if you don't know how to play chess (at least basic), you can't even watch it. So, chess won't boom as kabaddi. It's not a TV sport.
@@HinduDharma839 they are talking about TV viewership.
@@yourneighbour304 agreed but when ppl come across chess having never played for, it only takes 5 seconds for them to make the judgement it's not for them so they will never reach the stage of dedicating half an hour to learn the rules. And i'm not talking just how the pieces move, most ppl know that, but they need to know some of the intricacies to truly enjoy the game.
@@yourneighbour304 Yes one definitely learns those intricacies with time but with Kabaddi and a lot of other sports, it has the potential to capture attention almost immediately due to its physical nature. Even if we may not be fully aware of the rules, we can almost understand instinctively the power dynamics and whos doing well and whos not and simply its just cooler to watch than pieces being moved across the board and this is certainly representative of the masses and not just my opinion.
Ofcourse there are aspects of chess that can also be instinctive and someone who has never played before can tell who's worse from which side of the board is being overloaded with opposite colour pieces, players reactions and potentially even the space of control of each players pieces and how they work in combination if they have an understanding of how the pieces move but for a larger part of games, and esp ones played by high level players which get broadcasted in big-name tournaments, it will never be obvious to a beginner. Even if the commentary and bar caters to help with that, it's impossible for the commentary team to help a complete newbie understand most aspects because the intricacies are so deeply woven into every game which i personally think is what makes chess fun. With other sports, the aspect that makes it fun is the physical quality but with chess, the enjoyment comes from the deeper understanding and this is why i don't think chess will ever be followed actively worldwide like other sports. Especially when a viewer is tuning in at any moment, and where the commentary go through multiple games in short periods of time, again there will be a lot of confusion for a newbie that is not often seen at the same level with other sports where even if you join in anytime, you can still sort of figure things out without needing to listen to someone (which can be boring when you are forced to listen and not be able to find out for yourself at first glance).
With samay and what happened in 2020, people had a lot of time to put in that effort to learn which most now and in the future won't have to the same extent, the videos themselves were long and focused on few games which was easier to follow along
and plus because he is not a chess player himself it was possible to learn the intricacies clearly alongside him ofc coupled with his personality which helps. However the viewer now who is exposed to chess played by the best players in tournaments with lots of players with rapid commentary, it's not ever going to reach the masses as the game inherently does not possess the ability to spark interest quickly. The immediate spark is essential to keep the viewer interested in staying to learn the intricacies which chess lacks. In terms of chess youtuber popularity, that certainly has the potential to continuously grow as its far easier to digest for a newbie but making someone actively follow the tournaments themselves is difficult.
