GMs are valid authorities on chess protocols and we are lucky to live in an age when you can express your ideas with less reliance on traditional outlets. From your "draws" commentary to Magnus' thoughts on classical championship format, FIDE should strive for agility in an evolving chess landscape. Appreciate your podcast and thanks for the Prokofiev ballet. Love and good luck to you for candidates, from USA!

honestly, that game with the dancing knights sparked a good debate regarding draws in general, and your points are really great overall (about the arbiters being from fide directly, rules for qualifications). I had no idea the chennai masters was rated the same as TATA steel in terms of circuit points.... it really shouldn't be considering the rounds were too short....

Very good points across the video.
Regarding Chennai masters it is known that both Wesley and anish were invited and they only rejected. And if you think Gukesh has an advantage being invited there , Wesley and anish both played gct classical and sinqufield cup both of which Gukesh was not invited. Which had more points involved than the Chennai masterd

But I think since the tournament was scheduled at the last moment, it was inconvenient to Anish / Wesley to travel from St Louis, not the same for Gukesh and Arjun. So, Ian's point is still valid that the tournament was not announced earlier and it disadvantaged few players.

Thank you for telling the truth and a huge like for this video. Having a private lounge booth right in the playing venue separated from the playing area only by ropes is totally unacceptable. Even more outrageous is having electronic devices there such as a laptop. I would say even more: Having coaches/seconds with such devices too close to the playing area is also unacceptable! While broadcasting with a delay made this tournament almost completely free of cheating, having people with electronic electronic devices (like smartphones, tablets or laptops) in close proximity to the players negate this broadcasting delay at least to some extent. I also agree with Yan that just having this lounge might have helped Magnus score 1-1.5 mores. What am talking about? -- Obviously, I feel like this lounge breaches the anticheating measures. You can think what you want about this, but *I do think this lounge breaches the anticheating measures. The same goes for players constantly going into the area where electronic devices are allowed. UNACCEPTABLE!*
Happy New Year, folks! Congrats to Magnus, Anastasia Bodnaruk and Gunina! Congrats to Yan for the good results too, although he didn't take the first place.

In regards to the lounge I very much agree that all players should play at as equal terms as possible, the problem is that the level of attention and media preassure is hard to quantify but undeniably very far from equal. There is just no disputing that Magnus is the biggest star in chess by a mile and would suffer disproportionally from being in the common area.
But I definitely do agree that there should be at least a more semi-private lounges available to other players who also can make a strong case to Fide for needing one, like the one you shared with Hikaru one year for example!
Lastly I do think it's important to mention that team Magnus very explictly stated that he in no way had access to a laptop in the lounge, which I think would have given him a significantly bigger advantage than what the lounge was.

I personally think removing the draw offer, at least before a certain move number, is a pretty decent solution even if it would increase the amount of Berlin draws and similar lines. My reasoning is that if you know you're playing someone you know plays drawn lines like that you could prepare very deeply and maybe catch them off guard when they are expecting a free draw.
I am only a lowly 2200, but the amount of decisive games in for example the Grand Swiss seems to suggest to me that even at the top level there is room for more combative chess if the players are incentivized strongly enough!

The Chennai tournament and wijk had 20 and 27 points for first place respectively so close to 3/4th of the wijk aan zee tournament. While it's true that the number of rounds is much lesser, it's a problem specific to wijk which has 13 rounds and hence is a super tough tournament. Most other top invitational tournament has 7 or 9 rounds and get more points than Chennai because of higher average rating

In any other sport you would have been kicked out of the tournament, suspended, and fined for fixing a game. But I understand this is basically a tradition and acceptable in chess. And Most chess players probably think fans are too stupid to understand how easy it is for you guys to draw if you want, and some may use this as an excuse not to care if it's made obvious. But I think the tournament formats and point system needs to be revamped to discourage draws to bring more fans to the game.

  • @anotherelvis

Was great to hear Nepo's thoughts...
But have to say that "Tata Steel having nearly the same circuit points on offer as Chennai" is not quite accurate.
Tata Steel offered 27 points to the sole winner (i.e., Anish Giri) whereas Chennai offered 21 points to the sole winner (Gukesh eventually got 20 points as opposed to 21 since he was tied 1st on points and champion only on tie-breaks). So there was a difference of 6 points which is just slightly lower than 30%. So, in essence, Wijk actually awarded about 30% more points to the winner as compared to Chennai.
Also, in absolute terms, Wijk offered 6 points more to the sole winner than Chennai, which is actually double the eventual difference in total circuit points (3 points) between Gukesh (87 points) & Anish (84 points). Even beyond the top 2, Wesley ended just 1 point behind Anish and Arjun ended another 2 points behind Wesley. So, a 6 point difference is VERY significant.
But yeah, the diff was based just on the rating strength of the top 8 players in the tournaments. The no. of rounds, and the strength of players beyond the top 8 was not a factor, which may be can be tweaked a bit in the next cycle.

Vlad Kramnik is right but for the wrong reasons. Hikaru Nakamura is a 'bullying cheater' not an engine cheater.

I'm glad Vlad's accusing Hikaru, but I don't necessarily agree with Vlad's reasons for accusing Hikaru.

Similar to Bobby Fischer Vs Garry Kasparov case. Bobby said Garry cheated by pre-arrangement. Idk but Garry did cheat Vishy Anand, Judit Polgar & Alexei Shirov. That was bullying cheating, not engine cheating and not pre-arrangement.
Bobby afaik didn't acknowledge that Garry cheated Vishy, Judit & Alexei but instead accuse Garry of essentially everything else.
I'm glad Bobby hated Garry, but I don't necessarily agree with Bobby's reasons for hating Garry.

Hikaru & Garry are like Magnus Carlsen - bullying cheaters, not engine cheaters.

Of course all this could be like Vlad is being like Batman in The Dark Knight (2008) or Lelouch in Code Geass like pretending to be the bad guy. This might explain why
      - Nepo made that post quoting The Dark Knight
      - Vlad accused both Hans & Hikaru who are on opposite sides of axis of evil vs allies of evil.
      Good guys vs Bad guys
      - Axis of Evil = Good guys:
wesley so, hans niemann, bobby fischer, sergey karjakin, vlad kramnik (still! See below), ian nepomniachtchi, alireza firouzja, nodirbek abdusattorov, andrii baryshpolets, vishy anand, jan-krzysztof duda, christopher yoo, leela, ben johnson, elon musk, donald trump, andrew tate
      - Allies of Evil = Bad guys:

      - axis of evil (female) = good girls:
tingjie lei (or paikidze), janelle frayna, dina belenkaya, sara khadem (or carissa yip), robbi jade lew

      Re Vlad:
I view Vlad's accusation of Hans similar to Bobby's accusation of Anatoly Karpov & Wesley's wanting Sergey to not be in the 2022 candidates - it's a good guy fighting another good guy. The real bad guy in each respective case is Magnus, Garry & Magnus again. Tsk tsk. It's sad Vlad/Bobby/Wesley didn't realise that Magnus/Garry/Magnus is far more evil than Hans/Anatoly/Hans. Wait, I think Bobby did. Not sure. I think Bobby hated Garry more than Anatoly, but maybe not by much more.

He probably feels no players should get special treatment. I personally don't even think the site should allow speed running because that literally encourages cheating. And the fact Hikaru has no problem doing that says a lot about him.
