The one at 3:08! Got the 70-200 2.8GM, reason being that i thought together with the 2x TC i'd get alsmost the 100-400 GM on top. Any experience with that?
Personally got the 200-600 paired w/ my new a7riv, love it. Able to get in nice and tight on the jets that fly around here and managed a couple ok shots of some red tailed hawks.
I debated the 100-400 vs 200-600 for me I needed the extra range for subjects I'm shooting, might pick up the 100-400 in future as the 200-600 is a heavy beast to carry around all the time.
It’s such a versatile lens. The one thing you didn’t mention was macro type shots. The 100-400 GM has a short minimum focus distance so it is good for taking those detail shots on a small close subject also.
I shoot landscapes and when I first got into photography about two years ago, I always thought that I had to use my wide angles to get a good scene that shows scale. I found more often than not, the shots were hard to compose, as it can be difficult to balance an interesting foreground to an epic background. I borrowed a friends super telephoto and found that the compositions were a lot easier to get tighter compositions that were more mysterious and intruiging. You can capture the finer details of a scene and it adds to the story of a place. I bought the 100-400mm G and it never leaves my backpack... even on 15 kilometre hikes through the Alberta backcountry. It's such a versitile lens!
I got a Sigma 100-400 (contemporary) a few weeks ago, I've used it once a week (at least) since. Doing some sports and lots of cool landscape or subject shots. The focal length is perfect for so many things. It's a cool way to stand out and get unique shots. Super happy with it!
I'm guessing this lens gets overlooked due to the fact that you can pair a 70-200mm with a 200-600mm to cover even more focal range without needing the 100-400mm. I currently have the 24-105mm so pairing it with the 100-400mm makes sense if 400mm is the most you need.
Point is less handy for travel, 200-600 is nice no doubt but the 100400GM+tc1.4 can be in my bag 100% of the time and i can shoot near macro (90cm focus) to 840mm with TC1.4 and in crop mode on the R4 (still 26megapixels no aa filter). For daytime i also use the same combo 1635GM+24-105g+100400GM+tc1.4 perfect for a small bag.
@@scb2scb2 That's true that it sort of depends on the bag you carry. The 70-200mm + 200-600mm kit has two large lenses and still probably requires another two for most traveling photographers and videographers, likely something like a 24-70mm + favorite wide aperture prime.
@@scb2scb2 Hi, which bag are you using? I am considering buying this 100-400 GM with TC-1.4, 24-105 F4 G & 12-24 F4 G with either A7m4 or A1. Can all this equipment fit in a bag which is 13" long 8" wide & 9" tall?
@@amitkrupal1234 For that kind of setup 3 normal lenses (say 1635GM, 24105 on camera and 90mm for example) on top so i can switch to all 3 and leave them on. And then the 100400GM sideways i use a lowepro 350aw for the 200600 setup or video gear i use the bigger 40% 450aw.
200-600 is one of my favourite lenses. I've been thinking about getting a 100-400 though, since I'm stuck shooting locally with everything that's going on, and the 200-600 draws a bit more attention than I'd like
Your videos are killing it, Chris! Between the sketch style reviews and to the point, zero fluff, amazingly well-shot photo videos like this I am tuning in to every video!
Bought this for wildlife in the Galapagos Islands... what I never appreciated about it until I had it is the versatility - from landscapes to wildlife, but also the semi-macro capabilities. Some of my favourite macro-style shots have all been made with this lens (which means I don't have to take the 90mm macro out on a walk). Always in my top 3 lenses.
I love my 100-400mm, not only is it great for getting those distance shots, it works almost like a macro lens on the fly because of the close focusing distance.
I have this lens on my wish list to pair with my Sony a7R IV. Great for zooming in on those distant images as you did but don’t forget this has near Macro capabilities too 👍🏻😉
Only one word to add ... tc1.4 .... the perfect travel combo on a A1 or A7R4. Guess more words 100-400 is also perfect for 'macro' like shots since it can focus at 90cm. Shot images at 600+crop mode (26 megapixels at 840mm no aa on R4) and then within seconds went for a bug about 1 meter away.
That beat sync with the helicopter's red light is just epic!!! Pete taught me how to keep grinding, Mattih taught how to keep things fun and enjoy the process and you taught me how to be creative with little details man. Love it!!!
I could not second this any more, I could live with 24-70 and 100-400 if I could only have 2 lenses for motorsports and wild life and even portraits, 400mm is so nice, if you shoot APS-C it's even more awesome, mind you with A7RIV resolution you can crop at 2x and still get 30mp at an 800mm field of view! 😯
Hi Chris, your enthusiasm is clear to see for this lens. I'm now seriously thinking of buying one too, after reflecting on where my priorities ought to be. I have a 200-600 G which only ever comes out for specific events (mostly sports) when I know it will be worth the effort carrying. Whilst by no means compact I'm now thinking this 100-400 GM could make a great travel lens, bypassing the 70-200 option. Main downside is speed vs typical f2.8 default tele-zoom choice. I'm lucky in that I already own a lot of lovely glass, in zooms already having a 16-35 GM f2.8 and a 24-105 f4 G. I used to own a 70-200 Sony f4, but traded that for a Tamron 70-180 f2.8. Yet mostly I prefer primes when I can use them, but they are hard and slow to travel with. Taking about 5-6 primes is difficult, can be slow, inconvenient and lead to missed shots in trying to use when you don't know what you will be encountering. Like with my 200-600 they tend to be for specific events or day trips. The GM 135 f1.8 is lovely but limited in application. 90mm macro the same, also both hefty. The 35mm GM 1.4 is great for making subjects pop from a background. I'm also loving my 20mm f1.8. For astro and love of wide composition with a strong foreground. I had initially thought that a 14mm f1.8 (by all accounts excellent) would be my next lens. But I can shoot astro/landscape with my 20mm f1.8 or 24mm f1.4 so maybe a 14mm is overkill given my 16-35? Reflecting on never packing my 200-600 G for travel or 'just in case' use. I can see how a 3-lens travel kit comprising 16-35 GM, 55mm f1.8 prime and 100-400 GM may make sense. For me that would be considered minimalist and better than my typical approach of taking far to much.
I use the Sigma 100-400 on my a6400 with the MC-11 converter (Canon EF- Sony E) and that is my second favorite lens in my kit. It's so light and compact it fits nicely in my bag and I take it everywhere my camera goes. It's also about 3x cheaper then the Sony native.
one of my fav videos lately for the content. A lot of UA-camrs vlog indoors, this one is just unique after a year of quarantine. Good job dude! Love you and Lizzie so much!❤️
I literally was thinking last night about selling my 70-200 and purchasing the 100-400. I am officially taking this video as a sign that I am supposed to do that.
I just bought the 100-400 gm and it arrives Monday. I can't wait..I also have the 200-600mm. The 24mm 1.4 gm. The 16-35mm gm. 90mm macro. Looking to.pick up the 85mm gm next.
Good point about the difference from mobile photography. I own the 100-400mm and absolutely love it as a landscape lens. However I don’t agree with you saying it’s the best lens for wildlife; almost every Sony wildlife shooter I know prefers the 200-600mm for the great reach and internal zooming.
I just picked up a used 100 to 400 for the Fujifilm X system on Monday, and so far I've really loved it. I'm glad you made this video for it, since I don't see a lot of people using a lens like this. Thanks man!
My two passions; flying and photography. Excellent shoot! But there’s me thinking you were going to talk about my want to have lens. The Canon 100-400mm
Just been using the 70-200 mostly but this video helps to push me to think about the longer FL. Hey all you TO creators keep coming out our way to BC! Give us the heads up next time can show you other great locations to shoot!
I am still an A-Mount man, using my trusty A99, which after all is just a mirrorless A-mount camera. I have a 70-400 4-5.6 SSM, but also a Minolta 100-400 4.5-6.7 APO, which when I am going on long trips, is so much lighter than the 70-400. Optically the old Minolta is very impressive.
Both the 100-400 and the 150-600 are popular lenses amongst nature/sport photographers especialy crop sensor users. Amazing compression and reach. You should give the Tamron G2 or the Sigma S 150-600 a try...
I got the sigma for the a6400, I shoot sports. I'm going to get an a6600 as a 2nd body 1) (b/c I prefer its ergonomics, instead of getting a cheaper 2nd a6400), 2) b/c I'll use it in conjunction w/my sigma 24-70 on the other body. 3) the other orientation would be 24-70 and sigma 56. I originally had the 70-300g and it was soft on the long end as well as I wanted more reach. Hope this helps ya, feel free to ask any questions.
All the reasons that you listed that you love this lens are exactly why I love my Sigma 150-600. It is a big unwieldly beast but until I can afford the Canon 100-500mm It definitely gets the job done.
Totally agree. Got mine 2 years ago when I traded in a 70-200mm f4. Never looked back. Use it for landscape, woodland, wildlife and macro. My dynamic duo is the Sony 24-105mm and the Sony 100-400mm. Camera is an A7Riii.
After seeing all the amazing abd beautiful shots you were able to get with this lens, Chris, I am definitely setting my sights one one, as Landscape is one of the styles I want to experiment with in my own photography journey. usually when I'm in a sad, melancholy or depressed rut, watching content like yours, Peters, and Brandon Woelfels really helps me feel better and helps to inspire me enought to see myself achieving this as a career.
I was literally just sitting here telling m buddy I want a telephoto, but wasn't sure if I would use it enough for the price and then you go and post this lol
I shoot with that lens almost every day. It is my absolute favourite. What Chris didn’t stress was the amazing stabilization that allows shooting with the helicopter’s vibration handheld. I had the same hesitation about the price and I have never thought about that since.
I use to shoot all the time on the 100-400, wasn't mine it was on lone, I can say it was easily one of the, if not, the most versatile lenses in my kit and I miss it so much! I look forward to the day we can be reunited once again.
I do agree every photographer should have at least one super telephoto it's just so enjoyable I have the stigma 150 mm to 600 mm contemporary and it's such a beautiful lens my Canon EOS R loves it
Can you do a part 2 to this video? I'd like to see it with portraits and video use. I'm gauging whether to get the 70-200 or the 100-400. Also, I love the vibe of this video and the motion graphics.
The 100-400 with a 1.4 TC and A7r4 is deadly.. u can get from 100 to almost 900 with a 1.4 TC and 1.6 crop in ASPC mode.. And that's a twenty something megapixel sharp photo @ 900mm! Small, light (relatively).. Great vid and i agree, probably Sony's most under rated lens...
I was tempted with one yesterday. Way out of my budget range but maybe some day I was able to by another 75 300 canon . I wore out the used one iwas given 12 years ago. That was a stretch forme but I'm happy to have another one. Thanks for your video it game me some good landscape tips. I've been doing photography over 50 years and still learning and using my skills with what I have.
As a transitioning focus on Landscape Photography, I've recently (a year ago) sold all my gear to move to the RF mount, which allowed me to evaluate my lenses. I've never had a 100-400 (had 6 lenses in total) but the more I thought about what I wanted in my bag all the time the more it made sense, with all the other gear I lug around my 2 lens choice was the 15-35 and 100-500. I have a few other wants for some specific things but I'll try this out for a while but I'm thinking it'll be forever.
Sold! I just searched "do I need the 100-400.." I know I need* it, but thanks for the confirmation! And planning to go to Squamish this summer to MTB!!
The. arial shots and view are great...I have often considered it...but...but...I am just not a fan of telescoping zooms...(tho I have owned a few)...more apt to be damaged from bumps...and some have been dirt magnets...also... moisture (in tropical climates) is another concern... etc...but other than that they are quite popular for many...I presently own the older FE 70-200/4 .... I will soon purchase a Sony FE 200-600/5.6-6.3 (I have tried it and love it)...The added stop does not bother me as I am using a pair of A7c bodies along with an even older A7s..(for low light)...(I am an American retired in Bangkok...I mostly do street stuff now days)...Cheers P.S. By the way... I am from Washington State Just south of British Columbia...been up there a few times...
I wish :) , hoping santa may bring me one , only have my little tamron kit lense , been drooling over the 400 for about 2 years ..... maybe later this year ;) , great scenery mate and nice shots . Cheers .
I currently own the S Pro 70-200 f2.8 but I'm either waiting for Panasonic to release a fast wide lens or I'm picking up the 2x teleconverter for my S1H by the end of the year. I love compressing backgrounds and having an amazing reach.
I’ll cheers to that celebration Chris! I love my Sigma Art 100-400mm on the a7siii. It totally changes the way you see everything👌🏼In a really positive manner! Great video man.

Amazing compression and reach. You should give the Tamron G2 or the Sigma S 150-600 a try...
Hey Chris - another awesome video! Would you recommend this on a aps-c sensor body such as the a6400?
I've got the same question for the exact same camera.
Hope this helps ya, feel free to ask any questions.
the vibe is just soo chill 🎞
All the reasons that you listed that you love this lens are exactly why I love my Sigma 150-600. It is a big unwieldly beast but until I can afford the Canon 100-500mm It definitely gets the job done.
Totally agree. Got mine 2 years ago when I traded in a 70-200mm f4. Never looked back. Use it for landscape, woodland, wildlife and macro. My dynamic duo is the Sony 24-105mm and the Sony 100-400mm. Camera is an A7Riii.
After seeing all the amazing abd beautiful shots you were able to get with this lens, Chris, I am definitely setting my sights one one, as Landscape is one of the styles I want to experiment with in my own photography journey. usually when I'm in a sad, melancholy or depressed rut, watching content like yours, Peters, and Brandon Woelfels really helps me feel better and helps to inspire me enought to see myself achieving this as a career.
this is how much I love chris hau videos..Im already watching it after being notified the video was up for 5 seconds :)
Still deciding between the tamron 70-180 or the sigma 100-400......... this video is edging me closer to the latter! Thanks for content Chris!
One of the best lenses that I own to be honest. I love the compression and images that I am able to capture with this lens. great video
How did you take the shots of the helicopter tale while it was flying? This vlog was awesome (footage, editing and background music)
Glad you got to get out and experience our beautiful country again! Great video man!
Right! The stabilization is really really good. Thanks for pointing that out
@@agapyearish9982 +1 about the stabilisation and using it very regularly.
I pretty much just have my 24mm prime or telephoto lens.
@@MichaelKubler-kublermdk That’s funny. I’m exactly the same - 24prime and the telephoto
Great video Chris! I live in Squamish and it is fun to see you shooting in some of my favourite photo spots.
Dude that tail rotor shot was insane! (Maybe you mention in later in the video but) wow I’m in love with that angle!
Awwww the dog in the beginning 😍😍
I use to shoot all the time on the 100-400, wasn't mine it was on lone, I can say it was easily one of the, if not, the most versatile lenses in my kit and I miss it so much! I look forward to the day we can be reunited once again.
Haven't watch this kinda video on UA-cam since last March. This is freaking beautiful..... And the colour grading on this video is 😍
This was one of your best videos you've made in a while. You seem more relaxed. Thanks!
great job expressing the joy it can be to out w your gear. Sound points made about the 100-400, I think I need to pick one up!
I got one last November and it’s been the best purchase I have made
Glad to see you make it out to the west coast 🙌🏼 love the telephoto lenses!!
Hi Chris, nice video! I do not like 100-400mm because it is dark and deliver grainy photos compared with 70-200 2.8 gm II
100-400 is my most used lens!
Great vid! Im so happy I got the 100-400. Always bring it for my landscape photography.
Great to see you outside again
As a transitioning focus on Landscape Photography, I've recently (a year ago) sold all my gear to move to the RF mount, which allowed me to evaluate my lenses. I've never had a 100-400 (had 6 lenses in total) but the more I thought about what I wanted in my bag all the time the more it made sense, with all the other gear I lug around my 2 lens choice was the 15-35 and 100-500. I have a few other wants for some specific things but I'll try this out for a while but I'm thinking it'll be forever.
Thanks for reminding me of the privilege of living in BC.
Can't wait to get out into the woods and mountains again.
I like my 70 to 200 f4 because it zooms internally. Just got it by the way, and I'm so in love
love it! I think the wide angle for landscapes is overrated! btw, what about the 200-600mm?
I bought it last month. It's fantastic. I highly recommend.
Sold! I just searched "do I need the 100-400.." I know I need* it, but thanks for the confirmation! And planning to go to Squamish this summer to MTB!!
I have the sigma 100-400 for Sony. Love that lens soooo much.
Love the telephoto landscapes, but for wildlife 400mm is usually too short on a full frame. I have the 200-600 and I'm longing for a bit more reach.
Woah the color grading in this is next level! Wondering what you id differently?
right when I am struggling between 70200 and 100400... thanks nice video
The. arial shots and view are great...I have often considered it...but...but...I am just not a fan of telescoping zooms...(tho I have owned a few)...more apt to be damaged from bumps...and some have been dirt magnets...also... moisture (in tropical climates) is another concern... etc...but other than that they are quite popular for many...I presently own the older FE 70-200/4 .... I will soon purchase a Sony FE 200-600/5.6-6.3 (I have tried it and love it)...The added stop does not bother me as I am using a pair of A7c bodies along with an even older A7s..(for low light)...(I am an American retired in Bangkok...I mostly do street stuff now days)...Cheers
P.S. By the way... I am from Washington State Just south of British Columbia...been up there a few times...
I wish :) , hoping santa may bring me one , only have my little tamron kit lense , been drooling over the 400 for about 2 years ..... maybe later this year ;) , great scenery mate and nice shots .
Cheers .
My Sigma 100-400 DG DN OS for my a7Riii will be here in a couple of days, I can't wait!
Great! And what about the 200-600? I think it would be better to take that eagle shot closer. What do you think?
The photos just look out of this world.... great vid!!!!
I picked up the pump 100-400mm refurbished lens and it’s been awesome for race photography.
