Yeah I never saw a 8 ball fleece IRL and then the trend faded away on Tiktok. The thing is I think it was more of a testament to the reemergence of Stussy as a brand. As I have seen a considerable amount of people wearing Stussy when three years ago they would have never had it.
Exactly. Most people do not dress like that. Only places I ever see this type of stuff is in my school, and even then a majority of kids don't dress like that. A lot of people have a warped view of how popular these trends really are.

Nah, baggy jeans have been trendy for a looong time. I’d even say they’re kind of on their way out (goes for baggy clothes in general imo). Not saying you should stop wearing them when the trend eventually does fade out though.
as an elder millennial, I've been so happy to see younger generations pick up on our old styles like baggy pants, sambas, dainty tops, clogs, carabiners, and huge shorts, not just because it's validating for how we used to dress, but because it encourages second hand shopping. we donated all those styles to goodwill when the ultra skinny hipster aesthetic came around. it's so easy to get on recycled trends by buying affordable used items, and keeps them out of landfills. and some of us olds were smart enough to keep the good stuff in the back of the closet, and can feel cool again :) i've hung onto all my skinny jeans. it's only a matter of time....

i think the current fashion trends from youth come from what we used to see when we were kids! i feel like a lot of my style comes from what i would see in the media in the early 2000s and a bit of the early 2010s (really just a bit) &&& the 90s fashion i’d see from reruns. i’m also influenced by the people i see every day and some people in the media now. i believe this is how fashion embodies a mix of trends because of the constant recycling, renovating & just overall new. it’s very cool to see

Style has become so inclusive compared to when you had to wear specific brands, silhouettes, and styles to be on trend. Although trends exist today, they are integrated into this major shift in the cultural fabric of fashion.

they were doing the turtleneck layering under a buttoned up shirt way before it hit the west, same with pleated skirts and baggy jeans. i think now, they're not so ahead of the curve as before but if you were a kpawpy in 2016 you could literally spot another fan by how they dressed bc it was so different
I think we're moving more and more towards a "there is no trend" being a trend. As you said, most of this stuff exists exclusively online or you have to go to a big city. As someone in NYC very often, even the tiktok trends are not what takes over the city at all. Everyone just has their own style and way of being. Since it's summer right now though, tons of tourists from rest of the country in their standard graphic tees and shorts right now, haha. And I'm surprised sweater polos didn't get a mention for trends this year. They've made a huge splash recently and I think we'll see even more in the colder months.
As someone who doesnt have tiktok the IRL vs. Online Fashion is very real. I saw adidas sambas EVERYWHERE but many of the other trends never really came through to the „real“ world. Even though I live in Berlin and most people are pretty fashionable, on the regular people rather go for function and comfortability instead of something that tiktok would deem fashionable. If you see a trend its normally a Gen-Z and often its very obvious that its not their personal style bit mere a try to be trendy. I personally think more creators should drift back to the „everyday“ -fits instead of trying to create something outrageous to gain attention. Even if their personal style is more out there, I would rather see oitfits they wear on a regular basis instead of the crazy red big boots with a mini skirt and a harness lmfao

I think the carabiner trend is a result of the cropped tees and rule of thirds trends that you mentioned before. Tops are becoming smaller or "shorter" and as a result, we're kinda seeing the opposite of last decade where it was baggy top and slimmer bottoms. Now much more attention is being paid to what bottoms you're wearing and the belt chains and carabiners are pretty much the accessories of your lower body. I personally love it, I was always a chain-wearer but now I've started adding more stuff to the front belt loops to add to my look.
I come from a state where there’s nothing but construction workers and people that need keys, it slowly transitioned to dense cities that found that it’s easily customizable with anything you like with keychains and other stuff while also having keys accessible. I just didn’t like having keys in my pockets or bag, carabiners just made sense!
As far as overseas goes, one of the trends that caught my eye was the "Dopamine" trend in China. I struggle with putting outfits together that involve super bright colors, but seeing the people over there do it with multiple aesthetics opened up my eyes to the possibilities 😂

I think that the fall/winter trends are going to reflect everyone getting a little sick of the constant minimalism. I’m sure there will definitely be a lot of minimalism present in fashion trends but also leaning more towards funky silhouettes and bright colors.

Re women's footwear: Mary Jane's are classics for a reason. They will never go out of style, and I think they've penetrated enough "niche" fashion genres that they'll always outlast trends. Kitten heels though...never liked them, doubt I ever will. They are unbalanced shoes, and are also uncomfortable to wear lol. Oh! And Tabi's - I just don't understand them. Love the ballet flat trend though, lovely to see my age group wearing shoes my mom used to wear when I was younger.
Maybe it’s a regional/cultural thing but the carabiner on the belt loop is nothing new and I’m surprised it was considered a trend in this video. I’ve found it prevalent in the rock climbing, biking, and skate communities especially. I’ve always hated the feeling of my keys and car fob in my pockets so I’ve been using the carabiner trick since HS. Plus I think it minimizes the chance of losing your keys.
I'd argue that pretty much every existing item that becomes a trend has been prevalent in certain communities already. Using many ribbons has been a staple in fairy kei/lolita communities. Similarly, mary janes haven't really left the preppy academia fashion scene, and have been pretty popular in parts of the cybercore community for a while. When these things become more popular in the public, they start to become a trend. Saying that carabiners are trendy now doesn't mean that they were never worn, moreso that they are now being worn more casually and by people that are not really part of the communities they were originally popular in.
It's like one of those things that also stem from blue collar/working class communities due to its practicality. I always see people like my dad and others who work in construction, factories, etc. using carabiners. Carabiners also have some significance in lesbian communities.
It's interesting to see the sambas that were created to play indoor soccer or football now become a trending fashion item. It's not just the Sambas though, tops, trousers, and foot wear that once had an alternative purpose are now becoming fashionable pieces and trends! I am all for the Adidas Sambas and even my dad has a pair and shows them off when coaching soccer ! Definitely looking into a pair when they restock the women's size 8s

Your vacuum point is true, especially when you get older (that is not to say old people can't dress). Personally, I've been away from social media in terms of fashion, and I feel so disconnected from what is currently trendy. (I refuse to use TikTok, from a mental health perspective). It's interesting, because you, Drew, are technically my ONLY window into this world. I work in a corporate tech setting in NYC, and though I have no dress code and can pretty much do what I want, I almost always just show up in not too polarizing stuff. Sure, I have a Balenciaga Yeezy hoodie, Kith shorts, and dunks. Or maybe a t-shirt, Naked and Famous MIJ, and foam runners, but I'm not really all too worried about standing out. I only seek cohesion in my fashion choices; mostly, I get looks at my foam runners in the office... Also in NYC, other than SOHO, you don't really see people doing anything polarizing in terms of fashion choices, especially in my line of work, most people wear pretty basic stuff, albeit probably lowkey expensive... I've been moving toward more muted pieces like Japanese Americana and am starting to buy things more for the value, material or whatnot. I've long lost my need to be unique, and would rather look cohesive (in terms of my line of work). I'll be honest, whenever I see really crazy fits nowadays, I'm a bit confused since I'm not in the in-group anymore.
Loved what you said about the Mary Jane/ballet flat/ kitten heel trend!! I think a lot of the styles of them (popular and recently released) are also on the more timeless side. Some look like shoes my mom wore to school back in the day. I think the Mui Mui ones are going to be seen as more trendy but designs like the Sandy Liang ones give a more timeless vibe with the overall shape, fabric textures, and colorways. I also think that this could be a reaction to two social factors, one being post pandemic. People want to feel more put together and feminine even in small ways such as footwear, this classes up a casual outfit without compromising too much on comfort. Even a white baby tee, a dark/raw wash pair of wide leg stiff denim, and ballet flats with a bun or hair accessories and silver or gold jewelry will look very very put together with Mary janes, ballet flats, or kitten heels. Secondly economic, with prices rising I think looking more and more like an employed or employable person is going to be more and more mainstream as a reaction to economic instability.(Peep the quiet luxury moment…. Which I hated BUT I have to admit it also makes sense that people want more timeless chic pieces because given the economy people will be buying less and less and shoes are something that can be infinitely reworn without question unlike clothing items such as tops). We saw a more intense version of this in the early 2010s…. After the 2008 great recession. (When every highschooler was dressing like a secretary to go to 2nd period) Though I don’t think it will ever be as extreme as during that time because of the Gen Z labor mindset. So I think it will stick to choosing one element and implementing it into an outfit, such a khaki color workwear fabric skirts, or pinstriped denim/pants, button up women’s wear shirts, to more subtle elements like footwear or hairstyles like the French twist and claw clips, and makeup styles (clean girl makeup….. looks very much like job interview makeup if you ask me). But I could definitely be wrong…. I mean look at the Mui Mui FW 2023 collection…. It’s giving secretary.
I personally don’t pay much attention to trends whether it’s online or IRL. I just go for what feels comfiest and looks best *on me*. I didn’t even know about most of the trends mentioned in this video until I watched this. It just goes to show how there’s still a huge disconnect between virtual trends and live trends and that virtual life doesn’t accurately reflect the lives people carry day to day. Edit: I have seen crop tops everywhere tho, and personally I’m really sick of it. So many retailers sell tops that are already cropped and it really reduces my desire to purchase them. Crop tops are nice when the outfit calls for it… I don’t want every top to be cropped.
Personally I hope that wider pants/y2k looks and the carabiner trend stay for a long time. Wider pants are so much more comfortable and fun for me as someone who lifts weights and hss thicker legs. I've been rocking the carabiner in the belt loop for a while now for it's functionality, but I remember being made fun of ~4 years ago by one of my buddies saying I looked like a janitor 😭😂 Love how this little detail can express more about your interests and hobbies too! i think one of the BEST trends that came back on 2023 is graphic everything. graphic tees, shorts, shoes, ive even seen BELTS with images embedded on them. i think its such a good way to put personality on an outfit, and as the previous years havent had a lot of textures and patterns in mainstream fashion i think this is what we really needed
I think it's interesting that you chose a clip of Jennie's vlog for the South Korean influence part because so many of the trends you mentioned in this video were worn by her!! Now I can't confidently say if she started them or anything like that but I can surely say that she made the Adidas Samba's super popular in Asia and the ribbon/balletcore trend that's been so popular also was part of her oufits for her new solo song. So yeah, I don't really want to fight others that may not think she has much influence lol but I would really recommend following her instagram or youtube to check what she's wearing! At least for me that i'm interested in fashion, I follow her and some fan accounts too and I've been surprised many times by seeing some of the things she wears become popular, she's definitely one to watch!

I live in NYC and though you definitely see these trends IRL I actually think it’s still at a smaller scale than you would expect compared to how often you see it online. I.e. I have a pair of ganni flats that are really trendy online but I haven’t seen anyone in NYC have them yet. The juxtaposition between social media Vs IRL makes me personally slow down and not feel like I have to adhere to trends to feel fashionable
im so here for most of the trends this year they just feel more body inclusive and generally more comfortable, i dont think after expeiriencing such breathable loose fitting fashion the past couple years i could ever go back lol .

as far as mary janes go, i have seen some luxury/designer brands like ferragamo, gucci, and prada creating men’s mary janes and have even seen male celebrities like tyler the creator and harry styles wearing them. I personally got the dr marten 8065 and love wearing it in place of a derby to add some interest

The belt loop carabiner trend is a redux of the "chatelaine" used by women in Victorian (?) times. 1800-something. They kept all kinds of little tools on these gorgeous accessories. On the crop tops, it's the new proportions that I think make it so noticeable. The geometry of the jeans and t shirt look changed enough to notice. Just found your channel and it's great!

As someone who is old enough to see the trends I wore when I was younger come back around I think the downside of Sambas and ballet flats come back around is that they are really impractical shoes that damage your feet and cause further back problems long term.

11:53 I did the carabiner thing back in my emo/scene kid days, it was big when I was in high school around 2010, it was mostly with scene kids and hipsters. If you went to a Warped Tour back then you would of saw everyone wearing their keys out on a carabiner on their waste or on a lanyard sticking out of a pocket.
the phone charger belt loop thing was like a joke back in 2014-2015, almost an early poorcore trend. and where im at that carabiner trend got over rinsed and died out by early 2020. the coverage on the big red boots thing was on point tho! nice work man
I feel like Japan fashion been doing these trends 2 years ago already. They are just so good at being authentically cool over there without trying. The US always playing catch up. Nothing wrong with that though but interested to see what people have to say what the US has influenced in trends recently.
It's specifically Tokyo that has such developed fashion subcultures that the rest of the world hasn't caught onto much. I think the reason (my very biased reason) why the fashion there is more interesting is because they typically aren't developing their fashion to get attention (like the big red boots) but they're dressing up for their specific tastes. Really wish people were like that in my town ;-;

Let’s remember Japanese street wear is heavily inspired by American street wear. American fashion will evolve and come up with something new. I think in general what American fashion can improve on is everyone not dressing so casually all the time. Going to the store in Pj’s like you rolled out of bed should be looked down upon more

As someone who's pre insta and ticktock generation, I'm horrified to see the amount of clothes being thrown away. Looks like people no longer buy clothes to be enjoyed for years to come but just to be shown in one or two posts on social media. Hope this awful "trend" will die out at some point. To be honest the more I get into fashion, the more I notice that even in my midsize hometown are quite a few fashionable folks bringing trends to the real world. With the samba it is finally a sneaker of the year that I also would totally wear. The past years with New Balance 550 and Nike Dunks were just not right me. Don't get me wrong, really liked the New Balance 1906R with thisisnever that and preordered the Aimé Leon Dore 860s for next year. Just the NB 550s were not my thing.

13:30 I actually had a friend who wanted to put his keys on his jeans, saying that he wanted to call attention away from his shirt, shift focus in a way. Unfortunately! My friends and I were not as supportive because the key chains were like reaching mid thigh and made him look imbalanced. On another note the "carabiner aesthetic" is reminding me a lot of phone fobs? It almost like the masculine version of this accessory that I mostly see being used in hyper feminine aesthetics
my faves had to be the straight leg baggy-but-not-too-baggy, cargos, the sambas and the ribbons & bows, just because they were so wearable and refreshing in comparison to the exaggerated trends we've seen over the past few years. i really hope they stay in style for longer :) and i didn't really like the ballet flats and mary janes - i think it's a trend that has to settle a little longer as it hasn't really trickled down into mainstream fashion imo. right now, the most fashionable options are all from designer brands so isn't really accessible which is probably why not many people are wearing them.

2023 fashion feels somewhat timeless and resourceful yet still really fun compared to circa 2018 when vintage graphic tees paired with pleated plad work pants, white airforce 1's and a corduroy cap or bucket hat was the pinnacle of street style to me. I graduated highschool in 2017 😅 So its been fun watching niche trends and the mainstream evolve.
The nostalgia is real! Many of these trends were popping in the late 90s/early 2000s...with the exception of the red boots (unless it's a throwback to some of the video game characters of the 90s 😂). Also, Dunks low is still the way to go in my view - they're still wildly popular here in Australia- but it's a matter of preference. The "quiet luxury" trend has been everywhere so I'm surprised it didn't make the list, possibly outdated by now as it's boring? Great points about internet v IRL fashion! I enjoyed this video.

i started seeing the jeans with the faded wash in the middle in korean fashion, and i’m seeing it now in the west. and i went to the mall and i saw the fast fashion brands like zara and h&m imitating k-fashion siloettes with the jeans, shoes, etc

the whole thing of mary janes suddenly being trendy is kinda funny to me, i started looking for these like 2 years ago and found them so hard to find and now they're suddenly everywhere, same goes for bows and ribbons. with leg/hand warmers and long jeans skirts i've found myself in the same situation

#pvv I think by august the trends are mostly set but there’s still time for more before the end of the year. Fall and winter fashion is usually more toned down and less flashy and loud.
I find it weird how a lot of UA-cam channels don’t even study African fashion, Yk like once Asia, Europe and America have been explored it’s as if that’s where fashion has ended when we have brands like Daily Paper which originated in South Africa exist or an upcoming Nigerian brand like WTAF is starting to get bigger, it sometimes feels like fashion injustice and I know it’s hard to actually know all corners of fashion but sometimes we gotta try sumn new here and there
I loved watching your video and it was so well-informed on the kinds of trends that are rife in 2023. I do think that for the accessories part of the video one trend is missing which is the big headphones aesthetic (I'm guilty of it as well lol). I think wearing headphones, the bigger the better, influences an outfit and portrays a certain aesthetic and idea of the individual!

I think the trend scale for sneakers you covered in the first 3 minutes is very accurate. I also think were in a place where each one will stay around. The culture is just being added to, maybe saturated but here to stay
PVV A: for my style personally, Autumn will have bigger and better trends. I love pink so im really happy with the barbie movie but i think autumn always introduced the most unique trends.
My favorite trend is tree/hunter camo being used in grungier outfits. Its absolutely badass and changed my whole perspective on those kinds of pieces, realtree seems a whole lot more dope to me now lol
belt loop carabiners are definitely something that i've noticed a lot lately and i'm surprised that there's not a lot of talk about it too. as for the nichification of fashion, i was literally just talking about this with my mom because there really aren't any rules to fashion nowadays. she'll keep asking me if clothing of hers is still "in" and i tell her that nothing is exactly "in." if you feel good and if you personally like it, then who cares? lol. i like the "nichification" bc i think it also helps when it comes slow fashion culture since youre not contributing to fast fashion and buying trendy items all the time to wear it once and dump it, yknow? i think after the supreme bape era, we started to see a lot of variety. Shein fashion is the worst, the justification of it as a cheap option is mute when the person buying it is wearing trending items for a month if not less. Just because it’s cheap it’s not a reason to waste money.
As Korean, I think korea's fassion trend is mostly affected by japan nowadays. But it's glad to see korea's effect on fashion trends become bigger and bigger.

The Online vs IRL fashion segment of this video was super necessary, I think fashion influencers tend to rule out trends almost a year before they leave the mainstream. People get bored too easily with trends, something could be "over saturated" on tiktok but you might rarely see that item in real life. Like the stussy 8 ball fleece for example. W video
Yeah I never saw a 8 ball fleece IRL and then the trend faded away on Tiktok. The thing is I think it was more of a testament to the reemergence of Stussy as a brand. As I have seen a considerable amount of people wearing Stussy when three years ago they would have never had it.
Exactly. Most people do not dress like that. Only places I ever see this type of stuff is in my school, and even then a majority of kids don't dress like that. A lot of people have a warped view of how popular these trends really are.

Nah, baggy jeans have been trendy for a looong time. I’d even say they’re kind of on their way out (goes for baggy clothes in general imo). Not saying you should stop wearing them when the trend eventually does fade out though.
as an elder millennial, I've been so happy to see younger generations pick up on our old styles like baggy pants, sambas, dainty tops, clogs, carabiners, and huge shorts, not just because it's validating for how we used to dress, but because it encourages second hand shopping. we donated all those styles to goodwill when the ultra skinny hipster aesthetic came around. it's so easy to get on recycled trends by buying affordable used items, and keeps them out of landfills. and some of us olds were smart enough to keep the good stuff in the back of the closet, and can feel cool again :) i've hung onto all my skinny jeans. it's only a matter of time....

i think the current fashion trends from youth come from what we used to see when we were kids! i feel like a lot of my style comes from what i would see in the media in the early 2000s and a bit of the early 2010s (really just a bit) &&& the 90s fashion i’d see from reruns. i’m also influenced by the people i see every day and some people in the media now. i believe this is how fashion embodies a mix of trends because of the constant recycling, renovating & just overall new. it’s very cool to see

You're the only one I have seen that has touched on the nichification of fashion. Style has become so inclusive compared to when you had to wear specific brands, silhouettes, and styles to be on trend. Although trends exist today, they are integrated into this major shift in the cultural fabric of fashion.

I have been wearing these raspberry coloured Mary Jane flats for the past months and I love them so much they are beautiful , comfortable. They elevates my outfits even tho I’m wearing simple outfit. Also everyone compliment them . They are so timeless . women been wearing them so long time ago.

Ever since I started following Korean fashion around 2016 I've been ahead of most trends. I first saw biker shorts in korean stores and then kim k wore it and it became massive. And minimalist fashion of 2018. And the 90s revival that is still going. Cottage core!! There are som many! They are amazing! ** I don't wear most of them, I just notice it

they were doing the turtleneck layering under a buttoned up shirt way before it hit the west, same with pleated skirts and baggy jeans. i think now, they're not so ahead of the curve as before but if you were a kpawpy in 2016 you could literally spot another fan by how they dressed bc it was so different

I think we're moving more and more towards a "there is no trend" being a trend. As you said, most of this stuff exists exclusively online or you have to go to a big city. As someone in NYC very often, even the tiktok trends are not what takes over the city at all. Everyone just has their own style and way of being. Since it's summer right now though, tons of tourists from rest of the country in their standard graphic tees and shorts right now, haha. And I'm surprised sweater polos didn't get a mention for trends this year. They've made a huge splash recently and I think we'll see even more in the colder months.

As someone who doesnt have tiktok the IRL vs. Online Fashion is very real. I saw adidas sambas EVERYWHERE but many of the other trends never really came through to the „real“ world. Even though I live in Berlin and most people are pretty fashionable, on the regular people rather go for function and comfortability instead of something that tiktok would deem fashionable. If you see a trend its normally a Gen-Z and often its very obvious that its not their personal style bit mere a try to be trendy. I personally think more creators should drift back to the „everyday“ -fits instead of trying to create something outrageous to gain attention. Even if their personal style is more out there, I would rather see oitfits they wear on a regular basis instead of the crazy red big boots with a mini skirt and a harness lmfao
the ballet flats, kitten heals and mary janes have been some of my favs this year. i didn’t even realize they’d gotten popular enough to be considered a trend, but i love that specifically women’s fashion has been more willing to do out of the ordinary things the last few years
I think the carabiner trend is a result of the cropped tees and rule of thirds trends that you mentioned before. Tops are becoming smaller or "shorter" and as a result, we're kinda seeing the opposite of last decade where it was baggy top and slimmer bottoms. Now much more attention is being paid to what bottoms you're wearing and the belt chains and carabiners are pretty much the accessories of your lower body. I personally love it, I was always a chain-wearer but now I've started adding more stuff to the front belt loops to add to my look.
It seems most women are still wearing tight leggings and yoga pants.

I come from a state where there’s nothing but construction workers and people that need keys, it slowly transitioned to dense cities that found that it’s easily customizable with anything you like with keychains and other stuff while also having keys accessible. I just didn’t like having keys in my pockets or bag, carabiners just made sense!
As far as overseas goes, one of the trends that caught my eye was the "Dopamine" trend in China. I struggle with putting outfits together that involve super bright colors, but seeing the people over there do it with multiple aesthetics opened up my eyes to the possibilities 😂

I think that the fall/winter trends are going to reflect everyone getting a little sick of the constant minimalism. I’m sure there will definitely be a lot of minimalism present in fashion trends but also leaning more towards funky silhouettes and bright colors.
My Asian mom has been a long skirts lover since 20 years!!! I remember all the white girls looking at her judging her wearing long skirts whenever we would go abroad where everyone wore jeans and look how tables have turned

Re women's footwear: Mary Jane's are classics for a reason. They will never go out of style, and I think they've penetrated enough "niche" fashion genres that they'll always outlast trends. Kitten heels though...never liked them, doubt I ever will. They are unbalanced shoes, and are also uncomfortable to wear lol. Oh! And Tabi's - I just don't understand them. Love the ballet flat trend though, lovely to see my age group wearing shoes my mom used to wear when I was younger.
Maybe it’s a regional/cultural thing but the carabiner on the belt loop is nothing new and I’m surprised it was considered a trend in this video. I’ve found it prevalent in the rock climbing, biking, and skate communities especially.
I’ve always hated the feeling of my keys and car fob in my pockets so I’ve been using the carabiner trick since HS. Plus I think it minimizes the chance of losing your keys.
I'd argue that pretty much every existing item that becomes a trend has been prevalent in certain communities already. Using many ribbons has been a staple in fairy kei/lolita communities. Similarly, mary janes haven't really left the preppy academia fashion scene, and have been pretty popular in parts of the cybercore community for a while. When these things become more popular in the public, they start to become a trend. Saying that carabiners are trendy now doesn't mean that they were never worn, moreso that they are now being worn more casually and by people that are not really part of the communities they were originally popular in.
It's like one of those things that also stem from blue collar/working class communities due to its practicality. I always see people like my dad and others who work in construction, factories, etc. using carabiners. Carabiners also have some significance in lesbian communities.
It's interesting to see the sambas that were created to play indoor soccer or football now become a trending fashion item. It's not just the Sambas though, tops, trousers, and foot wear that once had an alternative purpose are now becoming fashionable pieces and trends! I am all for the Adidas Sambas and even my dad has a pair and shows them off when coaching soccer ! Definitely looking into a pair when they restock the women's size 8s

Your vacuum point is true, especially when you get older (that is not to say old people can't dress). Personally, I've been away from social media in terms of fashion, and I feel so disconnected from what is currently trendy. (I refuse to use TikTok, from a mental health perspective). It's interesting, because you, Drew, are technically my ONLY window into this world.
I work in a corporate tech setting in NYC, and though I have no dress code and can pretty much do what I want, I almost always just show up in not too polarizing stuff. Sure, I have a Balenciaga Yeezy hoodie, Kith shorts, and dunks. Or maybe a t-shirt, Naked and Famous MIJ, and foam runners, but I'm not really all too worried about standing out. I only seek cohesion in my fashion choices; mostly, I get looks at my foam runners in the office...
Also in NYC, other than SOHO, you don't really see people doing anything polarizing in terms of fashion choices, especially in my line of work, most people wear pretty basic stuff, albeit probably lowkey expensive...
I've been moving toward more muted pieces like Japanese Americana and am starting to buy things more for the value, material or whatnot. I've long lost my need to be unique, and would rather look cohesive (in terms of my line of work).

Loved what you said about the Mary Jane/ballet flat/ kitten heel trend!! I think a lot of the styles of them (popular and recently released) are also on the more timeless side. Some look like shoes my mom wore to school back in the day. I think the Mui Mui ones are going to be seen as more trendy but designs like the Sandy Liang ones give a more timeless vibe with the overall shape, fabric textures, and colorways.
I also think that this could be a reaction to two social factors, one being post pandemic. People want to feel more put together and feminine even in small ways such as footwear, this classes up a casual outfit without compromising too much on comfort. Even a white baby tee, a dark/raw wash pair of wide leg stiff denim, and ballet flats with a bun or hair accessories and silver or gold jewelry will look very very put together with Mary janes, ballet flats, or kitten heels.
Secondly economic, with prices rising I think looking more and more like an employed or employable person is going to be more and more mainstream as a reaction to economic instability.(Peep the quiet luxury moment…. Which I hated BUT I have to admit it also makes sense that people want more timeless chic pieces because given the economy people will be buying less and less and shoes are something that can be infinitely reworn without question unlike clothing items such as tops).
We saw a more intense version of this in the early 2010s…. After the 2008 great recession. (When every highschooler was dressing like a secretary to go to 2nd period) Though I don’t think it will ever be as extreme as during that time because of the Gen Z labor mindset. So I think it will stick to choosing one element and implementing it into an outfit, such a khaki color workwear fabric skirts, or pinstriped denim/pants, button up women’s wear shirts, to more subtle elements like footwear or hairstyles like the French twist and claw clips, and makeup styles (clean girl makeup….. looks very much like job interview makeup if you ask me). But I could definitely be wrong…. I mean look at the Mui Mui FW 2023 collection…. It’s giving secretary.
I personally don’t pay much attention to trends whether it’s online or IRL. I just go for what feels comfiest and looks best *on me*. I didn’t even know about most of the trends mentioned in this video until I watched this. It just goes to show how there’s still a huge disconnect between virtual trends and live trends and that virtual life doesn’t accurately reflect the lives people carry day to day.
Edit: I have seen crop tops everywhere tho, and personally I’m really sick of it. So many retailers sell tops that are already cropped and it really reduces my desire to purchase them. Crop tops are nice when the outfit calls for it… I don’t want every top to be cropped.
Personally I hope that wider pants/y2k looks and the carabiner trend stay for a long time.
Wider pants are so much more comfortable and fun for me as someone who lifts weights and hss thicker legs.
I've been rocking the carabiner in the belt loop for a while now for it's functionality, but I remember being made fun of ~4 years ago by one of my buddies saying I looked like a janitor 😭😂 Love how this little detail can express more about your interests and hobbies too! i think one of the BEST trends that came back on 2023 is graphic everything. graphic tees, shorts, shoes, ive even seen BELTS with images embedded on them. i think its such a good way to put personality on an outfit, and as the previous years havent had a lot of textures and patterns in mainstream fashion i think this is what we really needed
I think it's interesting that you chose a clip of Jennie's vlog for the South Korean influence part because so many of the trends you mentioned in this video were worn by her!! Now I can't confidently say if she started them or anything like that but I can surely say that she made the Adidas Samba's super popular in Asia and the ribbon/balletcore trend that's been so popular also was part of her oufits for her new solo song. So yeah, I don't really want to fight others that may not think she has much influence lol but I would really recommend following her instagram or youtube to check what she's wearing! At least for me that i'm interested in fashion, I follow her and some fan accounts too and I've been surprised many times by seeing some of the things she wears become popular, she's definitely one to watch!

I live in NYC and though you definitely see these trends IRL I actually think it’s still at a smaller scale than you would expect compared to how often you see it online. I.e. I have a pair of ganni flats that are really trendy online but I haven’t seen anyone in NYC have them yet. The juxtaposition between social media Vs IRL makes me personally slow down and not feel like I have to adhere to trends to feel fashionable

im so here for most of the trends this year they just feel more body inclusive and generally more comfortable, i dont think after expeiriencing such breathable loose fitting fashion the past couple years i could ever go back lol .

as far as mary janes go, i have seen some luxury/designer brands like ferragamo, gucci, and prada creating men’s mary janes and have even seen male celebrities like tyler the creator and harry styles wearing them. I personally got the dr marten 8065 and love wearing it in place of a derby to add some interest

The belt loop carabiner trend is a redux of the "chatelaine" used by women in Victorian (?) times. 1800-something. They kept all kinds of little tools on these gorgeous accessories. On the crop tops, it's the new proportions that I think make it so noticeable. The geometry of the jeans and t shirt look changed enough to notice. Just found your channel and it's great!
I love the trend of carabiners, and it is so few people that talk about it. But is a really cool accessory and i think it becomes like a type off jewelry for men to spice up their outfits, and i love that

As someone who is old enough to see the trends I wore when I was younger come back around I think the downside of Sambas and ballet flats come back around is that they are really impractical shoes that damage your feet and cause further back problems long term.

11:53 I did the carabiner thing back in my emo/scene kid days, it was big when I was in high school around 2010, it was mostly with scene kids and hipsters. If you went to a Warped Tour back then you would of saw everyone wearing their keys out on a carabiner on their waste or on a lanyard sticking out of a pocket.
Wierd that its a 2023 trend when everyone used them where I live in like pre covid times like 2019
the phone charger belt loop thing was like a joke back in 2014-2015, almost an early poorcore trend. and where im at that carabiner trend got over rinsed and died out by early 2020. the coverage on the big red boots thing was on point tho! nice work man
I feel like Japan fashion been doing these trends 2 years ago already. They are just so good at being authentically cool over there without trying. The US always playing catch up.
Nothing wrong with that though but interested to see what people have to say what the US has influenced in trends recently.
It's specifically Tokyo that has such developed fashion subcultures that the rest of the world hasn't caught onto much. I think the reason (my very biased reason) why the fashion there is more interesting is because they typically aren't developing their fashion to get attention (like the big red boots) but they're dressing up for their specific tastes. Really wish people were like that in my town ;-;
They’re just two different regions of the world as well. I don’t think US fashion is lagging behind it’s just different. People in US for the most part don’t want to dress like the Japanese. Let’s remember Japanese street wear is heavily inspired by American street wear. American fashion will evolve and come up with something new. I think in general what American fashion can improve on is everyone not dressing so casually all the time. Going to the store in Pj’s like you rolled out of bed should be looked down upon more
I can’t get into the sambas because they remind me of the Nike kill shot 2 from 10 years ago (j crew exclusive that’s since become more accessible). My friends and I wore out so many of them. Quality was nonexistent after a certain point lol

I think there have been a lot of trends this year my favorite would have to be Barbiecore because as a kid I would get mocked at because of how much I would wear pink and the color in my closet mostly would predominate now people just accept so thank you Barbie 💖

Just discovered you young man. Very interesting video. Glad you mentioned the issue with fast fashion. As someone who's pre insta and ticktock generation, I'm horrified to see the amount of clothes being thrown away. Looks like people no longer buy clothes to be enjoyed for years to come but just to be shown in one or two posts on social media. Hope this awful "trend" will die out at some point. I'm still wearing clothes I bought 10 or even 20 years ago and if I buy anything new it has to be of good quality that will last forever.

Really enjoying to see trends IRL on the streets of Berlin. To be honest the more I get into fashion, the more I notice that even in my midsize hometown are quite a few fashionable folks bringing trends to the real world.
With the samba it is finally a sneaker of the year that I also would totally wear. The past years with New Balance 550 and Nike Dunks were just not right me. Don't get me wrong, really liked the New Balance 1906R with thisisnever that and preordered the Aimé Leon Dore 860s for next year. Just the NB 550s were not my thing.
i've been with the carabiner 'trend' since highschool so like 2021 and i'm obsessed with seeing others do the same now. it's so so functional (like u mentioned) and adds so much to an outfit (i swear everyone just looks cooler with keys jangling around on their waistband). such a good video too - keep it up!
13:30 I actually had a friend who wanted to put his keys on his jeans, saying that he wanted to call attention away from his shirt, shift focus in a way. Unfortunately! My friends and I were not as supportive because the key chains were like reaching mid thigh and made him look imbalanced.
On another note the "carabiner aesthetic" is reminding me a lot of phone fobs? It almost like the masculine version of this accessory that I mostly see being used in hyper feminine aesthetics
my faves had to be the straight leg baggy-but-not-too-baggy, cargos, the sambas and the ribbons & bows, just because they were so wearable and refreshing in comparison to the exaggerated trends we've seen over the past few years. i really hope they stay in style for longer :)
and i didn't really like the ballet flats and mary janes - i think it's a trend that has to settle a little longer as it hasn't really trickled down into mainstream fashion imo. right now, the most fashionable options are all from designer brands so isn't really accessible which is probably why not many people are wearing them.

2023 fashion feels somewhat timeless and resourceful yet still really fun compared to circa 2018 when vintage graphic tees paired with pleated plad work pants, white airforce 1's and a corduroy cap or bucket hat was the pinnacle of street style to me. I graduated highschool in 2017 😅 So its been fun watching niche trends and the mainstream evolve.
The nostalgia is real! Many of these trends were popping in the late 90s/early 2000s...with the exception of the red boots (unless it's a throwback to some of the video game characters of the 90s 😂). Also, Dunks low is still the way to go in my view - they're still wildly popular here in Australia- but it's a matter of preference. The "quiet luxury" trend has been everywhere so I'm surprised it didn't make the list, possibly outdated by now as it's boring? Great points about internet v IRL fashion! I enjoyed this video.

i started seeing the jeans with the faded wash in the middle in korean fashion, and i’m seeing it now in the west. and i went to the mall and i saw the fast fashion brands like zara and h&m imitating k-fashion siloettes with the jeans, shoes, etc

I find it weird how a lot of UA-cam channels don’t even study African fashion, Yk like once Asia, Europe and America have been explored it’s as if that’s where fashion has ended when we have brands like Daily Paper which originated in South Africa exist or an upcoming Nigerian brand like WTAF is starting to get bigger, it sometimes feels like fashion injustice and I know it’s hard to actually know all corners of fashion but sometimes we gotta try sumn new here and there
I loved watching your video and it was so well-informed on the kinds of trends that are rife in 2023. I do think that for the accessories part of the video one trend is missing which is the big headphones aesthetic (I'm guilty of it as well lol). I think wearing headphones, the bigger the better, influences an outfit and portrays a certain aesthetic and idea of the individual!

I think the trend scale for sneakers you covered in the first 3 minutes is very accurate. I also think were in a place where each one will stay around. The culture is just being added to, maybe saturated but here to stay
PVV A: for my style personally, Autumn will have bigger and better trends. I love pink so im really happy with the barbie movie but i think autumn always introduced the most unique trends.
My favorite trend is tree/hunter camo being used in grungier outfits. Its absolutely badass and changed my whole perspective on those kinds of pieces, realtree seems a whole lot more dope to me now lol

as for the nichification of fashion, i was literally just talking about this with my mom because there really aren't any rules to fashion nowadays. she'll keep asking me if clothing of hers is still "in" and i tell her that nothing is exactly "in." if you feel good and if you personally like it, then who cares? lol. i like the "nichification" bc i think it also helps when it comes slow fashion culture since youre not contributing to fast fashion and buying trendy items all the time to wear it once and dump it, yknow? i think after the supreme bape era, we started to see a lot of variety. (i love seeing the variety in fashion the most within friend groups tbh.)

Shein fashion is the worst, the justification of it as a cheap option is mute when the person buying it is wearing trending items for a month if not less. Just because it’s cheap it’s not a reason to waste money.
