  • Fighting for Recognition
Mark, a TBOC member from the Netherlands, promotes the recognition of post-traumatic stress disorder in young military members. He recalls that young soldiers, in particular, may need support after their deployments to face and work through their experiences. Mark has struggled with multiple traumas from his past as a helicopter SAR diver with the Royal Dutch Navy. Mark is a fighter, a fun guy, and he is always energetic. And so, he is passionate about using his energy for a good cause.
    Leaving PTSD Behind
Mark embarked on a 200 km march through Zwijndrecht, in the Netherlands, on 2021-04-24. With this, he turned his back on PTSD and navigated with his inner compass back to his safety zone. Mark started at the "Den Helder Marine & Helicopter Base"; the goal was to cover the entire distance down to his hometown within eight days. He managed to reach home within seven days.
The only equipment he had with him was his shelter canvas, fresh socks, first aid kit, a metal drinking cup, water filter, knife, compass, and the confidence in his self-reliance. He relied on gifts from friendly people he made acquaintance with along his journey. Mark's GPS location was viewable online on a map at any time. Quite a few people approached him and gave him food, water, and great conversations.
200 KM against PTSD - Journey VLOG Documentary
Mark did a tremendous job reporting daily with VLOGS during his march. This video documentary is a summary of the events during his journey. In addition to that, it is a personal reflection on what was going through his mind while walking alone. Enjoy a genuine, funny, and emotional insight into Mark's life.
TBOC and its members continue to support Mark and his cause in a variety of ways. If you want to help him too, you can do the same: donate money to his fundraiser. Proceeds will go to the Dutch veterans' organization VFONDS (vfonds.nl/).
Mark is getting the proper media attention for his venture. A Dutch TV Morning Show has interviewed him, newspapers are reporting. It's just the beginning of what the future holds for his project. We will hear more from it soon.

The TBOC community is open to all veterans. As a club, we support each other and make sure that no one is left alone with their inner struggles. Communication and openness can help overcome traumatic events, and if at first, only the first thought is: I am not alone.
