What a great principal. I keep hearing stories about schools and staff members who refuse to let children go to school with their service dogs, which turns the whole thing into a giant legal battle which is hard for everyone. So nice and refreshing to see someone who actually gets it.
Alana Kelly schools are a gray area because of IDEA, which protects disabled students, and the ADA, which protects all disabled Americans. Under the ADA, legally, allergies are no excuse to deny access. In colleges, service dog handlers have to report to their Disabilities Coordinator that they have a service animal to assure the safety of others who may have allergies. In those cases, they simply just move away.
@Lola Davies The reason you aren't supposed to pet service animals is that they are always working and you petting them could distract them from what they are meant to do.
I think it incredible that dogs are able to help children with medical problems such as diabetes in our young children. Many people use service dogs to alert them of any problems that are happening or will happen.
This school, the principal, the parents and the kids.. they are all great.. making that lovely dog part of the society and not just service dog of someone.. It's great to see that this dog is important, treated with respect and part of those kids life..

It's not a hard rule. Unsafe for whom? is the question. Most service dogs have wonderful temperaments so it's not unsafe to the person who pets. Whether it's unsafe to the child needing the service dog depends on what they need the dog for. The best rule to go by is to ask the handler if you may pet. I never allow petting of my dog because she was abused before I got her and doesn't like being touched period, not even by me but luckily I only need her at night. I can tell when I'm awake whether my blood sugar is low or not.
@@rmbagby3 That's why I suggest asking. Like I mentioned I only need a service dog at night when I can't tell if my blood sugar is low so anytime I'm awake it's OK. That's if she will let you. She was a throwaway so she isn't particularly cuddly. The handler knows their need so if you ask and they say it's OK fine if they say no then ignore the dog.
Matt Wyrick, I think it’s best to give the handler full autonomy when we’re establishing norms. Instead of telling kids/adults it’s ok to go up to any and every service k9 team bc they want to pet the k9 (asking, or not), why not teach them to only interact with the k9 if offered by the handler. 1) For safety reasons. Most service k9s are working 24/7. 2) By teaching to ask, it puts the handler in a position to deny. Many ppl with disabilities deal with unwanted attention due solely to their disability...I certainly don’t want to go down the street getting barraged with “can I pet your dog?”...I’m just trying to get to the store/post office/etc Also, why do you take your k9 out in public if it is only working while you are sleeping?
@@rmbagby3 To train her. Like I said she's a throwaway and not real people friendly so I spend a lot of time walking her in town around people clicking and treating at every opportunity. I also have ADD and can often not notice if I put something down worst case for example is my wallet. I trained her to pick it up and hand it to me. Didn't really intend to use her that way but was a fun exercise in shaping because I did it with absolutely nothing but clicker and treats. No commands or even eye contact. Interesting thing that I noticed with of all the walking. I found she's very tolerant of children. A toddler crashed into her once and fell down. She stood there with her back stiffened while the toddler used it to stand up. I never taught her to help someone stand. Anyone else she would have moved away from but she seems to tolerate children sometimes better than she will me.
Same here I have a psychiatric service dog in training and I'm cyber school for the same reason. I will be going back to public school once my sdit is fully trained

The amount of uneducation on service dogs is incredible I myself use a service dog for my anxiety and panic attacks as well as scoliosis. I've had my girl for nine months and feel though she is a service dog she is always training. I personally don't use a prong but there is nothing wrong with them. Some companies are against them though. And under ADA only dogs and in some cases miniature horses are allowed public access rights. As for prong placement we all make mistakes so lay off. She is a young girl like myself (I'm 17) and we are far from perfect. Way to go Simba!
I agree with you that the training never stops, I think that goes for all dogs. Well people, too, really lol. I hope I never stop learning! Glad you have a dog to help you. Animals are just miraculous. And it's true there is a lot of misinformation out there. I love that mini horses can be service animals, too, now. I have a pet rat that helps me with anxiety and panic but she cannot be a legitimate service animal. Well not yet anyway lol. I am ever hopeful:) The only way to really educate is for people like you to spread awareness as you are doing here:) Calmly and intelligently informing people. I wish you and you dog well:)
@abcdefg A lot of people with scoliosis have a back brace, so they can't bend down. The dog may be trained to retrieve dropped items. The dog could also put preassure on areas to relieve pain.
@@ThePenguin369 Prong collars are amazing training tools. It gives a clear line between right and wrong. Also, service dogs are not robots. They still need corrections every now and then. Same as how they still need treats.
My BC "told" me my sugar was low , even before I knew I had Type 2 Diabetes. Tess would nudge me with a paw or woof in my ear if I was asleep to tell me I needed to check my sugar by "herding" me to my bathroom where I kept my meter. She'd herd me to the kitchen faster because she felt I needed to resolve that problem more quickly. She even taught my new puppy Gypsy her methods for taking care of her "mama" before she died at 16 yrs.
This will motivate other kids to have pets...beautiful. he is so good with all. Teacher and staff kudos to help this cause...you know how many u r motivating with...may all dogs have loving home in US. Simba u r hero
I was volunteering for the ADA for several years and met several people who where Type 1 Diabetics, who have service dogs ... just amazing dogs, that allow their human partner to live a safe life.
I'm a freshmen in high school and I'm thinking about getting a dog for my T1 diabetes (like this adorable little girl) because I can't always feel lows/highs (it would alert me)and when I do get a low I can sometimes get very dizzy and uncoordinated (would use dog for balance) also I tend to drop things or can't get the tabs/juice/granola I use to treat it (would pick it up if dropped or in different place) and this video makes me feel better about getting a sd
So annoying how people pet the dog. Also, I really like that this 9 year old is able to control her dog and not have it tethered to an adult with her. The first episode of Dogs on netflix had an 11-12 year old girl with her seizure alert dog and adults were in control of her dog
The dog should’ve been trained better in obedience. As in, he shouldn’t listen to other people if called. He shouldn’t get up unless he’s told to by the handler. I train service dogs I’m also a service dog handler. As in I use a service dog. So, I should be educated on this.

I also train my own service dogs and back in 2017 when my current service dog was a puppy in training we ran into a program team and the dog was so distracted by our presence and wouldn't listen to the handler i can't imagine how frustrating that would be, but my good boy did fantastic I always keep my service dogs manners in tip top shape.

I'm just curious how they handle situations like that........ my son is allergic to high shedding dogs and cats...( he breaks out in hives and his eyes swell shut if he gets near them) I had him in a therapy center for speech for a while, and had to remove him because there was a child there who had a service dog:... it was the center owners disabled child who had the dog, so I felt it was just best we found another place for therapy..... they tried to have my sons therapy on days the dog wasn't there, but there was still dog hair everywhere, so it didn't work..... I moved centers, but I'm guessing there are some people who would not....😕

Xiaoping Yang when he’s on duty he can’t be distracted by anything. If the dog is distracted Taylor will either go into DKA or insulin shock, which is worse than DKA.

What a wonderful principle but when she said that she’s going to have the diabetes for the rest of her life she said she had type two I believe and you can get rid of type 2
I have someone in my family that has diabetes and the doctor said that is able to get rid of type two can be “ cured”By eating the right things and taking care of your body. Type one though many people are born with and type one you were not able to get rid of. There are only special cases where people with type two can’t get rid of it
KitKat Candy actually you’re not born with Type 1 believe it or not. If that was the case I would’ve been Type 1 the moment my mother gave birth to me and not when I was 4.5 years old. Also, many people develop Type 1 in their adulthood. That’s why they changed the name from “juvenile diabetes” to Type 1 Diabetes. Plus, in some cases, if Type 2’s don’t take care of themselves they could become Type 1’s.
I got very rrustrated when people at my school kept on trying to pet wisdom my service dog im a fellow type one diabetic and those people are not allowed cause they are at "work" so remember dont try to pet a dog always ask!!
It depends on where you get your service dog from & weather or not they're in your state if you live in the U.S. Out-of-state training is more expensive than in state training. So, it's best to find a training service close to where you live. My family & I are applying for a service dog for my Autism, Depression, PTSD, & Anxiety soon, & we were able to find a training service in our state that costs about $6,500 USD (which is actually not bad, considering that it costs the trainers about $25,000 USD to train each dog). But (if you live in the U.S.) service dog training usually costs around $8,000 to $10,000 USD. in-state. Out-of-state training is usually a couple thousand dollars more. I don't know how much service dog training costs in other countries, though. I'll have to do some research to find out.

I'm in the UK and I get my service dog for free and that includes everything training, papers etc etc etc and he is also the best friend ever and I love it that he can go anywhere with me, especially when we go to a restaurant and the staff say no dogs allowed and I say it's against the law to not allow a service dog in a restaurant and then they leave us alone.
People say the same thing about my service dog. She's not sad. She is something called "low arousal". It is a necessary quality for service dogs. It basically means that they don't get excited easily. They are mellow and in fact, because they're so mellow people often say that they look sad or bored. Is this quality that causes too many people too often to come up to my dog and try and pet her because "She looks so sad!"
I really want to get a series dog to help me with the same thing and other things as well. I have type 1 diabetes because I have Lupus SLE that was undiagnosed for so long and the Lupus attacked my pancreas causing my type 1 diabetes. I also have Chronic Lyme Disease, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and several other chronic illnesses and a service dog would help a lot. My husband travels a lot for work so I am often on my own and we mostly worry about my sugar dropping while I am asleep. I have had 2 very close calls with lows that happened while I was asleep and a service dog could be trained to wake me up and give me enough time to get some sugar in me. If I am awake I am able to take care of things even when I am super low; but if I am asleep and unaware that I am dropping things can go bad fast. I also will randomly drop rapidly and when I start to drop I drop drastically and need a lot of sugar to be okay again. I hope some day I will be able to get a service dog. I know it would make me and the rest of my family feel a lot more comfortable especially when I am home alone for extended periods.
the prong is too low :/ there is nothing wrong with prong use in sd contrary to what some have stated but it is not on this dog correctly. :/ it should be much higher on the neck.
Are there service dogs for extreme anxiety? Social anxiety for the most part? I'm transgender, but that's not why a dog would be good, it's because of the hardcore anxiety i receive from being in public and not being able to use words. I'll start to shut down and cannot breathe correctly. I've always used my dogs as a way to calm down, but they are no where near trained or trainable at this stage in their lives.
Emotional Support Dogs are not Service Dogs, they do not have any public access rights. It sounds like you need a Psychiatric Service Dog, I have one who is task trained for my Panic Disorder. She alerts me before I have an anxiety attack and will do something called deep pressure therapy to bring me out of it quicker.
Yes, you can qualify for a Service Dog, specifically a Psychiatric Service Dog. Some tasks that the dog can do is alerting to anxiety (attacks) cues such as scratching, chewing hand, shaking, tapping etc, alerting to panic (attacks) cues such as severe shaking, increased heart rate, hyperventilation etc, performing Deep Pressure Therapy (DBT) to ground and help you calm down. I'm just giving some examples, there is much more that can be done by PSD's. Hope it helps xx

What a wonderful principle but when she said that she’s going to have the diabetes for the rest of her life she said she had type two I believe and you can get rid of type 2
I have someone in my family that has diabetes and the doctor said that is able to get rid of type two can be “ cured”By eating the right things and taking care of your body. Type one though many people are born with and type one you were not able to get rid of. There are only special cases where people with type two can’t get rid of it
KitKat Candy actually you’re not born with Type 1 believe it or not. If that was the case I would’ve been Type 1 the moment my mother gave birth to me and not when I was 4.5 years old. Also, many people develop Type 1 in their adulthood. That’s why they changed the name from “juvenile diabetes” to Type 1 Diabetes. Plus, in some cases, if Type 2’s don’t take care of themselves they could become Type 1’s.

I got very rrustrated when people at my school kept on trying to pet wisdom my service dog im a fellow type one diabetic and those people are not allowed cause they are at "work" so remember dont try to pet a dog always ask!!

How much does it cost to get a Service dog?
It depends on where you get your service dog from & weather or not they're in your state if you live in the U.S. Out-of-state training is more expensive than in state training. So, it's best to find a training service close to where you live. My family & I are applying for a service dog for my Autism, Depression, PTSD, & Anxiety soon, & we were able to find a training service in our state that costs about $6,500 USD (which is actually not bad, considering that it costs the trainers about $25,000 USD to train each dog). But (if you live in the U.S.) service dog training usually costs around $8,000 to $10,000 USD. in-state. Out-of-state training is usually a couple thousand dollars more. I don't know how much service dog training costs in other countries, though. I'll have to do some research to find out.

I'm in the UK and I get my service dog for free and that includes everything training, papers etc etc etc and he is also the best friend ever and I love it that he can go anywhere with me, especially when we go to a restaurant and the staff say no dogs allowed and I say it's against the law to not allow a service dog in a restaurant and then they leave us alone.

People say the same thing about my service dog. She's not sad. She is something called "low arousal". It is a necessary quality for service dogs. It basically means that they don't get excited easily. They are mellow and in fact, because they're so mellow people often say that they look sad or bored. Is this quality that causes too many people too often to come up to my dog and try and pet her because "She looks so sad!"

I have type 1 diabetes because I have Lupus SLE that was undiagnosed for so long and the Lupus attacked my pancreas causing my type 1 diabetes.
I also have Chronic Lyme Disease, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and several other chronic illnesses and a service dog would help a lot.
My husband travels a lot for work so I am often on my own and we mostly worry about my sugar dropping while I am asleep. I have had 2 very close calls with lows that happened while I was asleep and a service dog could be trained to wake me up and give me enough time to get some sugar in me. If I am awake I am able to take care of things even when I am super low; but if I am asleep and unaware that I am dropping things can go bad fast.
I also will randomly drop rapidly and when I start to drop I drop drastically and need a lot of sugar to be okay again.
I hope some day I will be able to get a service dog.
I know it would make me and the rest of my family feel a lot more comfortable especially when I am home alone for extended periods.

Are there service dogs for extreme anxiety? Social anxiety for the most part? I'm transgender, but that's not why a dog would be good, it's because of the hardcore anxiety i receive from being in public and not being able to use words. I'll start to shut down and cannot breathe correctly. I've always used my dogs as a way to calm down, but they are no where near trained or trainable at this stage in their lives.

Emotional Support Dogs are not Service Dogs, they do not have any public access rights. It sounds like you need a Psychiatric Service Dog, I have one who is task trained for my Panic Disorder. She alerts me before I have an anxiety attack and will do something called deep pressure therapy to bring me out of it quicker.
Yes, you can qualify for a Service Dog, specifically a Psychiatric Service Dog. Some tasks that the dog can do is alerting to anxiety (attacks) cues such as scratching, chewing hand, shaking, tapping etc, alerting to panic (attacks) cues such as severe shaking, increased heart rate, hyperventilation etc, performing Deep Pressure Therapy (DBT) to ground and help you calm down. I'm just giving some examples, there is much more that can be done by PSD's. Hope it helps xx
