Riding on Orcas Island as part of the San Juan Island Recumbent Cycling Trip. We had a fun day of hard work with a pay off on the summit. I talk with the riders and share my opinion of the metric system.

One of my very few pet hates with the USA is the aversion to the metric system.
It a big deal in the business I do.
Lovely scenery and good road surface made for a great video.

I agree with your rant about the metric system. I come from a background in biology and science and metric is the ONLY system of measurement for precision and consistency. Another interesting thing, is that distance measurements translate over to volume/weight measurements as well which isn't the case with Imperial (or "Freedom Units" as some once described our stubborn, crap measurement system we use here in the U.S.). For example, 10 centimeters is a decimeter, and a cube that measures 10 centimeters filled with water equals the same weight as 1 kilogram. Simple, elegant, and logical. I do a lot of woodworking, metalworking, and other kinds of fabrication and I often do my measurements in centimeters/millimeters since it's far easier to divide measurements in half than messing about with fractions of an inch and the like. Still, a life of driving cars and *thinking* in feet, inches, milers per hour, etc has made it hard to switch to KPH and KM when measuring my trike rides. It's something that I've wanted to push myself to do though. I like your idea of how much easier some distances will break down mentally when doing long cycling trips. Also, I really enjoyed viewing this trip. Your "trikes passing the camera" shot was definitely worth it. Lots of UA-cam videographers, especially bike riding/trike riding ones, settle only for talking to their cameras or facing them forwards showing only what they see from their point of view without showing themselves in a landscape, or showing that landscape as they pass through it. If you visit beautiful places you should want those images to tell the story, not just one's self talking to a camera. Thankfully, most of your storytelling includes nice views of the scenery, drone shots, and those laborious shots where you have to run back to get the camera. It's all worth it to produce videos of a MUCH higher production quality than a LOT of what else is out there.

I have done most of the San Juan Islands from Victoria BC. I saw my first recumbent trike in "2004 Tour de Lopez" event a British Windcheeta. This led me to buy my own trikes. 2004 Catrike Road (used) 2007 Catrike Road and 2012 Catrike 700

The island ssems like a good place for cycling. The nature looks nice. I think it looks like Gili Trawangan Island, Lombok, Indonesia.

I enjoyed watching your video. I live in Seattle and ride an older version of the Catrike Road no suspension. I put wheel covers on my front wheels and I had one on the rear before switching to a 20 inch rear Trispoke . I didn't see a single other rider with Aero benefits. For me its not about trying to reach the highest speeds but about being efficient. I was very impressed with the amout of reduced pedaling effort from the rear wheel especially. Think about all the air coming off your spokes when riding a roller set now reduce it by a significant percentage.
Live to see you try a wheel cover and get your perspective.
I have some UA-cam content showing the covers and the Trispoke if anyone cares to look .

Saw my ortho who specializes in my genetic disorder last week in Philly. I asked her what she thought about me getting a bike…she asked me “a 2-wheeled manual bike? Are you NUTS? Now, if you said a recombinant 3-wheel trike? THAT would be different!” I asked her if there’s any way we could get Medicare to cover it…since they seem overwhelmingly willing to pay for my muscles to atrophy in a wheelchair. She laughed and said “you’re talking like you think our healthcare system wants you to improve? How are they going to make more money of you if you build yourself back up?” 😔. I love MaryAnn, first orthopedic who has NEVER suggested any “experimental surgeries” in 60+ years 🤷🏼‍♀️. I need to win the lottery and get me a trike…I guess I need to start playing it first though…

Blinking lights ad night isn't smart. By day yes, but ad night, normal light is way better and safer.
I don't use a flag and don't wear a helmet. Flag I thought I needed, but I noticed that cars see me and give me way more space than on my upright bike. I also can cross the road way easier, because cars let me go even as I need to wait according the rules.
Helmet is something I will never wear.
It isn't a law, so why do it?
Safety is fake. But people love to believe that they are safer that way. The fact is, is that they have over 60% more risk to get an accident and with that, to get killed.
But I am Dutch and here only people that are mentally not that well, wear a helmet.

    • @jasonnealey8325
      @jasonnealey8325 2 роки тому

Disagree on the flashing lights . Why do emergency vehicles always have flashing lights . Helmet is preference I still wear one but it's really more habit from being a road bike racer , I don't like flags at all , I believe they only increase safety when going past parked cars that might back out of a spot .
Last it's really hard to compare Holand and America the shear size and population differences are astonishing.
Hope nothing I said offends anyone just voicing a point of view and I totally respect that everyone is entitled to thier own .

Then no Skyman on RecumbentPDX rides 😀! I had all 28 trikes lit up like Christmas trees. Everybody must wear a properly-fit helmet. Everyone must have a flag. That is - literally - the way we roll!

@@RecumbentPDX for a group ride I would were a flag , I already have a psychotic amount of lights including monkey lights if I want to go all out .
I used to be a Cat 2 road bike racer and now old and injured but I can still go fast on my trike , I went full Aero other than fairings , disc covers upfront , trispoke in back , aero waterbottles , bags placed out of the wind and if fully geeked I have the Giro Selector Helmet , I get mad props from the roadies .
