    War on Wheels is a 1943 confidential industrial film bulletin created for propaganda purposes. It was principally directed by Secretary of War Robert P. Patterson to the those involved in the production of tanks and to the men and women of automotive industries to show them the combat performance of the vehicles they have built. What it took to get a mechanized convoy through in the North African campaign serves as an illustration. The film portrays an American truck convoy ambushed by German tanks and rescued by group of United States medium tanks. Compares the mechanized strengths of the Axis powers versus those of the United States.
    This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD. For more information visit www.PeriscopeFi...

    Two points: 1) Pre-action, the truck convoy was driving too fast for cross country - that not only increases wear and tear on the trucks, but also raises a huge dust cloud that screams _"Please shell me!"_ 2) The convoy commander should have been screaming for the tank battalion at the first German cannon shot - if you have radios, use them..............ObCit: Yes, I know this is a war bond film, and they created the scenario to be Hollywood-Dramatic -- still, think of it as a a teachable moment.

    I was stationed at Ft Irwin NTC for five years. This reenactment had to be filmed in the desert around that area

    This film and films like it were made to show to assemblies of workers at former auto plants now producing armored vehicles. They were to show workers their products in action and how, if they took one sick day, Hitler would win the war. This must have been made in late 1942, when our only real combat was with the Germans and Italians in North Africa. Armor wasn't anywhere near as important to fight Japan, but we had to arm Russia and part of Britain as well as build up our own forces, so these morale films were actually pretty important in encouraging maximum worker productivity.

    The American tanks didn’t have the tank fire power to take out German tanks. Our shells would bounce right off them! That was remedied eventually, though

    It turns out I've watched this film before on another channel. I watched it again anyway. This is one of my favorites! You don't see many vintage films about convoys... Or at least truck convoys. I guess a significant part of World War 2 was about ship convoys.

    Wish they't take out that distracting counter, spoils a good restoration.

      Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films like this one were destroyed and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like this on online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
      So, in the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous UA-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content. We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to deal with these kind of issues.

      At least yours not smack dab in middle like a certain so called 'public restorer'. I appreciate the effort you take in preserving and cleaning these old films for us. And to allow us to watch these on youtube. Thank You. The news was stating how 1 restorer colourised and brought in professional lips interpreters who added voices to these long lost WW1 B&W films. It was amazing to 'see' what they were saying all these years ago in a age of silent movies and no sound movies. 1 thing I would like to point out if I may (my own opinion). Some B&W don't translate well to being colourised, while others bring in extra details that weren't noticed before. Thank you Periscope Film.

    • @lwilton
      @lwilton 5 років тому +1

      To sell bonds perhaps, but more importantly to encourage workers at factories to work harder. This sort of thing was shown specifically to workers at war plants and was somewhat restricted in distribution. The Buy Bonds movies were general distribution and shown in movie theaters everywhere.

    John Ford directed propaganda film. U.S. doctrine dictates thorough recce from air and ground before any (fast) movement. If forward units encounter resistance then unit halts and Commander calls in appropriate counter-fire...
    Tanks? - call in artillery, anti-tank and air-support if available. U.S. Tanks were for breakthrough and infantry-support - but hey - John Ford directed a good 'modern' Western, here, right? ;)
