- LIVE: Some of my colleagues in the Senate want to give in to the extortion of the microchip industry and hand them a $76 billion blank check. I say instead let’s enact the agenda the American people want.
Once again, zero accountability, like PPP funds that went to profitable companies with no oversight. Thank you for always standing up for the American people, Bernie!
And yet we'll never get student loans or crushing medical debt discharged. A disgrace
Those PPP loans were a Hungry Hippos free for all. No accountability whatsoever.

You could give the money to the people and they can buy more computers, but Republicans would call that socialism. Republicans want to give the money directly to the companies, but that would be corporate welfare. Also socialism... or maybe fascism.
Aren't the companies suppose to be making products to sell so they can inflate the bottom line... supply and demand... how is giving Intel free money suppose to make them more competitive? Now they can go to congress to give them money instead.
This isn't capitalism, when government is giving companies free money.
You want food stamps? Rent + Food combine to 140% your income? Sounds like you better start looking for another job, bum. Income means you no longer qualify. Either way, it's a handout to lazy Americans and needs to be cut and added into the defense budget...
Profitable companies want $200 billion? Is that enough to fix the manufacturing you destroyed for massive profits AND still be able to buy back stock this quarter? Should we include extra to ensure buybacks remain at previous levels? The federal government exists to expand the coffers of the wealthiest amongst us, after all this is the quintessential socialist country. The pioneers of socialism for the rich have a difficult job. Does the government reward the highest profitable companies accordingly, or rather those with the highest profit margins? Who deserves federal funding more?!
Comfy generous Socialism for the 1%, cruel austerity capitalism for the rest of us.

Americans are struggling to put gas in their cars and food on their table and a company that already makes billions has the nerve to try to threaten us for more..
They would outsource their jobs either way, giving them more money will just let them do it on the tax payers dime.
At most 76 billion, not 176 billion get your numbers straight before passing judgement. Also, this is not a threat, this is Paul Revere warning that the British is coming, so don't shoot the messenger, just because reality is not comfortable. instead heed the warnings a get prepared.
capital doesnt have fatherland it goes where it maximizes return on investment.. Thats why government should regulate capitalism! Unfortunately money in politics has corrupted the democracy. Bernie is one of the few who remain uncorrupted. All of this would change if people saw through the propaganda and just voted progressives based on economic policies...
You have no idea what you are talking about. You are no longer a manufacturing leader in the world, soon you will not be a technology leader either. While you whine about subsidizing ONE fab on US soil, last year alone Asia saw ground-breaking for 55 fabs. FIFTY-FIVE! The corruption has definitely been just as outrageous but I understand the sentiment.
We need guarantees if we are going to fund these companies we need numbers. How many high wage jobs will they create? How much of a discount are they going to give Americans? Is there anything in the bill that stops huge bonuses or stock buybacks?

Such a great point, that the number of hoops the poorer class has to jump through in order to receive government help/aid are many, many. Yet the elite class is granted zero. Stark explanation.
Love the analogy of the amount spent by Intel lobbying to Governmental political parties and the return on that from corporate entitlements. Why are we (the U.S.) being blackmailed by them if we are the ones in dire need and they have no loyalty to us.
Heard, I was forced to work during the plandemic, I was let go with no reason given the week the restrictions were lifted, and the state denied me unemployment benefits because I couldn't use their website without the pw they took a month to send me. Time restricted hoops I didn't have any way of jumping through. . .my state failed me and there was no recourse. I went hungry, barely paying my bills until 2022 when I finally found a non gig job. Still don't make enough to eat well, but at least I'm not starving. Anger doesn't feed my belly, but it sure burns even now, I am more than fed up with greedy elitists deciding our futures.

It seems unfair for them to get funds and then later bolt to low wage workers overseas rather than help the economy in the US.
I remember Obama several times talking about rewarding companies that create jobs here and penalizing companies that off-shore jobs, but he was all talk, no action.

We really do need a simple chart that shows from where our elected officals are gettng money from. Also with another chart showing their voting record while in office . I really don't care how old someone is or wheather they studder or not. I just want to know if they are there working in my place. The team politics has to stop. Lets look at the issues at hand. I agree with discussion of microchip blank check. No more blank checks to private industries! Disagree with overall govt healthcare however that was the entire strategy behind the unaffordable "AFA" which catapulted premiums to be unaffordable under "AFA" and private insurance....causing folks not being able to afford it so..... Was this the strategy to a national healthcare all along! I Think so. It was another long term democrat strategy.
You know, the now 70 billion is about the same amount extra we have given to the pentagon in the past few years... let them make their own damn chips, they said they really didn't need the money.

For CHIPs to work it would need to have targeted regulations to assure they use the money to boost domestic manufacturing. Of course they didn't. This Bill is preposterous and will not work. It is not targeted. It doesn't force companies to open factories because producing semiconductors takes years of intricate building and investment. These companies don't actually make the silica wafers. Companies like Samsung and TMC actually make it. We don't even have a US based alternative for it. Unless we address that critical element this won't work. It's just another congressional giveaway to corporations.

I am grateful that we have Bernie reminding us that these companies laid off tons of Americans in the past decades. How much money did these companies save by closing factories? I would approve of releasing those financials. The middle class has been decimated. They lost houses, family members, and suffer from the lack of access to mental and physical health care. I guess we should build another Dollar General with food that leads straight to diabetes and then unaffordable insulin shots. I honestly think Intel and others will keep the factories in the US and follow the rules. Just automate the labor and hire immigrants to keep the workers afraid to lose their jobs. Try Unionization with that landscape.

If the government subsidizes something, it should take proportionate ownership of the company. It should be entitled to a proportionate share of the profit.

This is exactly why we need regulation. Businesses have no ethics b/c others can undercut them, and people don't have good educ. b/c most public high schools are freedom stripping jokes and most private schools are compl. jokes.
and for college, in the US, the first 1 or 2 years, largely serve the role of high school in other countries (ie. all the gen. learning cour.)

Do you need a longer explanation on " How to get weak in a competetive market"? It's like a "survival training camp" that relies on a Pizza delivery service, Yeah, they'll survive. Until that service goes bust. Because the Hard-working competition has learned how to do it efficiently. They got good at it. While "our" guys live in a Pizza-carton-castle.

The print out captioning of Bernie's speech said "We should END US production of microchips. Of course that is the OPPOSITE of what he said, which was "We should EXPAND the US production of microchips"
Good effort to bring to light this obvious information. The industry has money, yes…they can afford to do what they need to do…yes…..we want this industry to be strong….yes….so what does congress propose? Throw money at it courtesy of the tax payer despite millions of better ways to spend the money where it could have a greater impact on improving society.
