The rating system is different. There are some anime broadcasts that are censored in Japan, and some that aren't. It's all down to the network that chooses to air the show. A good recent example of this is Danganronpa 3: Zetsubou-hen, which had it's 7th episode air this time last week with some rather spontaneous edits made to a particular scene involving a mass murder game about eleven minutes into the episode. If you've watched the scene already, you might notice there are a bunch of black areas obscuring particularly bloody deaths in the scene even with the already notable stylistic choice of the blood being a neon pink which could have potentially alleviated any furrowed brows over the concept, though the scene will undoubtedly be uncensored for the show's Blu-ray disc release. If you want to watch the scene for yourself, searching "Danganronpa Student Council Killing Game" will suffice, it's a better example if you see what I'm talking about rather than just taking my word for it.

Japan has made some very good games but what I don't understand is how they could be so hypocritical as they have released countless amounts of games, anime, manga and movies with violence on the same level of Mortal Kombat if not more violent. It's nice to know that a lot of Japanese gamers do appreciate Mortal Kombat more than we think but the fact that they can't sell it in their gaming market is ridiculous. They should know by now why the age rating system exists as that should be plenty of warning about the games having violence in them. If anything Japan is notorious for having countless titles with violence in them. Sorry Japan, I love the games and things you made but you need to really look at why you have the age rating system in the first place.
I also find it funny some CERO A (or to some extent CERO B) video game in Japan end up becoming rated M in USA, like the case of Persona. But the opposite is true for Japan, Infamous which is rated T in the US got a CERO Z/18+ rating in Japan despite the Japanese content wasn't censored nor have any graphic content add in the Japanese version. There's no way the US version of Infamous is censored while the Japanese version got the uncensored version (given that Uncharted 1 and Resistance was also censored in Japan by Sony).
There's been so few Western games that are sexy and fanservice-y, even before the Marxist crap of the 2010s. I wonder how Japan/Cero would have responded to a Western game that wasn't overly violent but had nothing but sexy girls in it. We're not going to know for a while, or maybe not ever
Well, let's clarify something. Most western gamers are completely fine with sexual content being censored, and even a lot of western gamers who are fans of Japanese games in particular are fine with it. Western gamers who are against sexual content being censored are a niche of a niche audience. It's pretty sad, our country is still overrun by prudes.
Honestly, censorship of any kind, be it in videogames, movies, TV series or books is absolute bullshit. The point of an age rating is that it should keep people of specific ages to view the content. But with games for mature audiences, EVERYTHING should be allowed. These things are art and have no valid reason to be censored.
Oh, but animes can have all the violence they need. Does anyone saw Tokyo Ghoul, Elfen Lied, and many other gore titles? That's is why I hate any kind of censorship, usually they make no sense at all.
***** And there is no distinction between both in case of censorship. Who plays MK is the same people who watches animes, if they can see violence on animes they can on video games. Censorship serves, teorically, to remove things who offends the audience, which in both cases are the same.
I don't agree with this line of thinking, but it's usually based on the fact that games are interactive while film is passive, so watching a violent act is less damaging than committing one virtually. Again, I don't agree with that notion but that is the reason violent games are more regulated than other violent media.
Thanks but it isn't "potentially". It was a big part. The only reason it's not well known is because most Japanese stuff is ignored by Western media, apart from the usual stereotypical, inaccurate crap.
I think back then those type of news don't get a lot of attention on a worldwide scale. I mean if this was reported today, it would get a lot of attention due to social media. But yeah, thanks for talking about it.
As horrific as that story is gaming is an easy target. Rarely do people with credibility stand up and call bullshit. It's a target over opportunity. Always will be. I have never seen a Japanese game as fucked up as anime or even regular movies. Anime and manga will always more sexual and violent. Again, games are an easy target.
That's more to do with CERO. I actually said this in another comment in the video, but some anime shows go censored while some don't, and it lies solely on the network that chooses to air it. The example I used for this somewhere else in the video was Danganronpa 3 Zetubou-hen's 7th episode, which included an obviously-censored-for-TV scene of a bunch of students killing one another (the scene included very jarring black areas where most of the blood was shown, which will probably be removed for the series' Bluray Disc release.). "Danganronpa 3 Student Council Killing Game" should bring it up on UA-cam, if you're curious.
its not that its just ignored but news about politics and shit are actually pretty difficult to find, and in some ways seem to be censored when reaching another country
That guy is ridiculously good. Attack of the Show even had him play another really good blind guy and after losing the 1st round he brutally murdered the other guy in seconds during round 2 and 3.
That happens a lot even in current Japanese games. Usually if it's in kanji it's out of respect. EDIT: Happens in FF13 with Lightning's name, sometimes kana, sometimes kanji.
It's quite common in Japan to switch names to Katakana, even when there's a kanji version available. Writing Raiden's name in Katakana gives it more of a "name-ish" feel.
In modern day Japanese, Katakana has two main purposes. 1) Being used to write Foreign non-Japanese names and words. 2) To put more emphasis to a word or company to make it stand out.
Never went to Japan but I'm studying the language and I can confirm ^ they can use katakana for foreign words even when there's a word for the same thing in japanese, what's the fucking point, and they do it all the time
tl;dr it got nuked in Japan. Pixiv only has like a hundred fan art in its lifetime on Pixiv while Genshin has like 25k artworks in just 2 years of the game's existence. I know they're two different games but I don't think Japan really love realistic aesthetics that much like in the west. Edit: Under the tag "モータルコンバット" MK has 1,468 artworks while the tag "原神" (Genshin) has 198,717 artworks wtf lol.
Why don't they just release all violent games with a Z rating. Violence doesn't mean unreleasable, but rather that it will simply be limited to an 18+ age range (as indicated by the CERO Z rating).
I wish it that easy for a game like MK to get a uncut release in Japan. But sadly, a lot of Z/18+ rated game from CERO do get censored too. I mean Fallout 3 got censored in Japan despite getting a CERO Z rating. I know other games that got CERO Z and still got censored in Japan.
Maybe it's the same as in the US: some stores won't carry games that are 18+. This is the real reason why most games (and movies these days as well) are censored in the west
the reason japan MK2 is censored is because the CERO rating, recently created didn't allow for realism in violence, and MK2 was considered too realist for the time
But around the same time Mortal Kombat came out in Japan. Another fighting game, Samurai Shodown was also released in Japan and that game had bloody fatality and that one wasn't censored in Japan while the fatality was censored in North America. So how come Japan didn't censored Samurai Shodown for fatality, but censored Mortal Kombat for fatality?
@@mdo7 In all of fairness, the finishers in Samurai Shoudown weren't as bloody or gory as Mortal Kombat. Sure you have dismemberment, but even then, all you see is a black surface from where victims get bisected.
@@JumugiDesunra Well, it still unfair. You can't have one game where fatality is censored (that would be Mortal Kombat), and another game where it used something similar to fatality (that would be Samurai Shodown) and not face any censorship in Japan. That's double standard, and also unfair. Maybe Mortal Kombat wouldn't be censored in Japan if SNK (or Capcom) published Mortal Kombat in Japan. If you had a Japanese companies like SNK or Capcom published Mortal Kombat games in the 90's, no censorship needed.
This is almost like the U.S trying to censor or ban the Yakuza series. Mortal Kombat, back in the 90s, they had people do moves on a green screen at Warner Brothers Games in Chicago. And now, there's more of voice acting in fighting games. Back in the 90s, I didn't think the fatalities in MK were that gruesome. Because I was just six years old when Mortal Kombat first debuted in '92. Now we have MK11 coming to the PS4 in April.

There's censorship in Valkyria Chronicles ? What is it and in which version(s) ? Wait, now I want a video for that too. Pretty please, Censored Gaming team?
Don’t you think Japan should’ve done the same thing with the MK series? (Because GTA V was heavily toned down/censored over there) So why not Japan program all of the Mortal Kombat series, heavily censored, toned down just like GTA V?
BloodySexyGames I think it does. It relies slightly more on the imagination, which is a lot more powerful than any graphics on any console will ever be.
That can definitely work, but how good the games would be depends on the games in question. Probably one of the franchise's biggest struggles was how topsy turvy its products were in terms of quality, and the blood, gore, and fan service eventually couldn't hide it anymore. While they seemed to have gotten back on track with the reboot games, I'm unsure if they'll sell well in Japan, as I've heard that most of the gamers over there aren't exactly huge on the franchise.
Ah, this is the video about Cero's creation that I was looking for. But God of War gets Japan releases, especially the original series that's about as explicit as everything until MKX (sure GoW4 was graphic, but not like 1-3)
No blood. No voices in the sex scenes. Dismemberments are ridiculously toned down to the point they lack the impact of their counterparts in the American releases.
I remember that older arcade and 16 bit games could have LESS censorship than their western counterparts. Like Final fight, Golden Axe. It seems to have been reversed completely?
Not a massive Mortal Kombat one. I honest to god prefer the Japanese fighting games (I mean like the ones made in Japan which there are a shitload of and some are exclusive there too) over the American/Western made ones. Japanese style (and the best of all, anime style) fighting games for the goddamn win!
3:55 one of the reasons MK didn't got popular in Japan is because Mortal Kombat, at its core, it's not a very good fighting game. I'd say the first Mortal Kombat to be really good was MK VS DC. 1 and 2 are very crappy, with no combos and all characters being the same except for special moves.

Western gamers who are against sexual content being censored are a niche of a niche audience. It's pretty sad, our country is still overrun by prudes.
The average gamer doesn't even know that their game is censored. They might have stronger feelings if they knew about it.
they hate it
and tend to be vocal about it.
like with Xeno X, but the end result led to people agreeing with the censorship as well as Fates
No matter where we live, we will always import things that we cannot get officially in our countries ( Japan to US, and US to Japan )
Just was watching the Anime "Hi Score Girl" . I forgot how Raiden was just speaking gibberish.
Oh, but animes can have all the violence they need. Does anyone saw Tokyo Ghoul, Elfen Lied, and many other gore titles? That's is why I hate any kind of censorship, usually they make no sense at all.
They aren't governed by the same rules. It's like comparing football to baseball.
Have you seen goblin slayer Jesus that show is violent
It's not the fall that kills you. It's the(Loading...) ground that breaks your fall.
2:37
i don't remember seeing that fatality. what version is that mortal kombat?
I've always had the game on sega genesis
SNES version SEGA version had a big uppercut (spine rip)
ahhhh. okay, thanks.
Interestingly, the new R-rated Mortal Kombat movie is allowed in Japan.
imagine In Japan you can't perform fatality or brutality but only friendship..
The real reason why MK11 couldn't be in Japan:
MK9: Skimpy-tight outfits and balloon ta-tas.
MKX/11: More clothes, no ta-tas.
Really interesting video... I didn't know about that serial killing part potentially playing a big part in the whole thing. TIL!
I'm very impressed how the narrator speak their name's right...
=_= come on japan you create technical fighters like Blazblue and yet you can't beat a blind guy at MK.....*cringe*
LOL
That guy is ridiculously good.
Attack of the Show even had him play another really good blind guy and after losing the 1st round he brutally murdered the other guy in seconds during round 2 and 3.
I SAID THE SAME TING.
ptbwf is his opponent being blind supposed to make it sound more challenging? Because it doesn't...
Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter are such radically different styles of gameplay I don't think we'll ever see a crossover, censorship or not.
Street Fighter and Tekken are even more different in gameplay but as we can see, that still worked.
@@gr8gmronly gameplay but everything else, SFxT worked but Mortal Kombat is a different case cause of the tone
@@andrewstickadius4333 It won't be a problem if Capcom is the one developing it.
1:21 why is Raiden written in katakana? Why isn't it written "雷電" since that's what the character was named after.
DuckDodgers1989 Moving to Japan has taught me there's actually a third one:
3) Wherever the fuck they want to without rhyme or reason.
Never went to Japan but I'm studying the language and I can confirm ^ they can use katakana for foreign words even when there's a word for the same thing in japanese, what's the fucking point, and they do it all the time
so that's why Japan made the rating system
That American player was clearly an earth bender.
British man talks about video games from Asia. That should be the new title to this video.
To be completely honest, most blind gamers are fuckin' good at games. In order to even play them, they study them for hours.
4:22 - 4:25
Doesn't Japan put censor bars over people's eyes when showing pictures in the media?
Imagine the possibilities and game lore if Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter were allowed to be crossovered
Any way to watch the Mortal Kombat Deception Japanese tournament? A quick Google and UA-cam search turned up nothing.
0:47 It's called Mugen and it's a free download...if anyone was wondering. You're welcome.
awesome video! a video about my favorite series on my birthday!
日本人も、モータルコンバット好きはいるのに・・・
なぜ日本版のモータルコンバットXLが出ないんだ!
Those days we got hard games, and they got the intended versions.
Nice work bro, good to see some original thoughts on MK🔥
tl;dr it got nuked in Japan.
4:32 I learn something new today.
Too bad, I wanted to see Japanese people playing Mortal Kombat.
Nope. CERO refuses ratings for games that are "too violent". ESRB actually lets anything be rated pretty much.
the reason japan MK2 is censored is because the CERO rating, recently created didn't allow for realism in violence, and MK2 was considered too realist for the time
But around the same time Mortal Kombat came out in Japan.
Forget a Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter game. Just Hanzo being in Smash would suffice.
Damn, even i think Mortal Kombat X is over violent, and i've been playing the series since i was about 8.
It's really weird.... because they have their own ultra-violent games over there, like Samurai Shodown.
Well at least the Injustice games don't have that problem. But did Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe get released in Japan? Seeing as it was rated T here.
If you want gameblay and great combat you play Street Fighter. And if you want gore you play Mortal Kombat. You don't play MK because it is a great fighting game. SF is better is that regard.
What about DOOM in Japan?
this doesn't make sense, Japan censored our video games out of violence while America censored their anime.
Fun Fact - Best Versions of each game to own:
MK1: Sega CD (port) / MK Deception Bonus Disc (Arcade Emulation)
MK2: Sega Saturn (port) / MK Shaolin Monks bonus (Arcade Emulation)
UMK3: Sega Saturn (port) / MK Armageddon Premium Edition (Arcade Emulation)
(The Arcade Kollection is decent but it is digital only, so there's that)
MK4: MK Gold second print on Sega Dreamcast
MK DA: Xbox
MKD: Xbox (Kollector's Edition includes the previosly mentioned MK1)
MKA: Xbox (or Premium PS2 version since that one has UMK3, however PS2 lacks 480p and obviously 720p as seen on the Xbox)
MK9: same (unless you love Kratos, then PS3)
MKX: same (original PS4 supports native 1080p whereas the OG Xbox One only does 900p, dunno if the One X makes a difference, it most likely does).
Do they have Age Restriction Ratings in Japan? They did mention it I think but I wasn’t very clear…..
so japan can be perverted but no violence and America can be violent but nothing about sex can be displayed. makes sense.
Please do the censorship in Valkyria Chronicles.
There's censorship in Valkyria Chronicles ? What is it and in which version(s) ?
Wait, now I want a video for that too. Pretty please, Censored Gaming team?
Now I really want to know what was censored. I love that game.
Please make it happen! :D
Soily9 +Davarman The only thing I know that was censored was that There is no S rank in the international releases. A will be the highest rank.
+Mrshootinputin I just googled it and it turns out there where actually a few things that where censored besides that.
Davarman
Thanks.
I feel the same way, I also against censorship.
I remember when the original came out and my dad looking at it "wtf" and me laughing. lol.
Where did you find the happy hallowen art at? Cant find it anywhere online.
That Kobe child killing thing sounds very interesting. I know, I'm bad but definitely interesting in a ID channel way.
Don’t you think Japan should’ve done the same thing with the MK series? (Because GTA V was heavily toned down/censored over there)
So why not Japan program all of the Mortal Kombat series, heavily censored, toned down just like GTA V?
Argument could be made that the grayscale fatalities are cooler.
No.
BloodySexyGames I think it does. It relies slightly more on the imagination, which is a lot more powerful than any graphics on any console will ever be.
Adrian Amorix No.
So they just automatically blamed video games, what a shocker.
So America did too.
I'm pretty sure they can censor parts of it for Japanese audience's I mean I know cero are extremely touchy but I'm sure it can be released there
i used to play MK2 back then on sega Game Gear the first color portable console back in 1995 :)
A blind guy one an MK tourny?! What the heck?! Is he like a jedi or something, who doesn't need to see because of his 6th sense?!
They could disable fatalities and qtes in story mode and censorship is done.
Gears of War 4 was released in Japan in 2017.
So why Daigo Umehara is in the thumbnail?
I understand keeping "Mortal Kombat", but why "two"?
Ah, this is the video about Cero's creation that I was looking for.
But God of War gets Japan releases, especially the original series that's about as explicit as everything until MKX (sure GoW4 was graphic, but not like 1-3)
No blood.
No voices in the sex scenes.
Dismemberments are ridiculously toned down to the point they lack the impact of their counterparts in the American releases.
Can somebody put a link to the japanese site
Funny to see Mortal Kombat not be released in Japan when Danganronpa exists.
All porn is censored in Japan, it's funny how we care about petty videogame censoring
censored is better than banned all over asia.....
4:25 Rest in peace
I hate how Governments like to tell people, what they can and can't play...
Did that blind won the Mortal Kombat tournament?
Pretty sure he did.
I remember that older arcade and 16 bit games could have LESS censorship than their western counterparts. Like Final fight, Golden Axe. It seems to have been reversed completely?
Samurai Shodown: I am Only to Get Loved By Japan and yeah, i toned down the violence
Cool at least scorpion has a chance at smash
I understand the violence censorship cause of cultural differences, but the Japanese sexual policies are very strange, like censored porn.
So MK is banned in Japan but hentae isn’t really
The blood in the snes version is just blood I mean they get hit
3:55 one of the reasons MK didn't got popular in Japan is because Mortal Kombat, at its core, it's not a very good fighting game. I'd say the first Mortal Kombat to be really good was MK VS DC. 1 and 2 are very crappy, with no combos and all characters being the same except for special moves.
