  • My light reviews have been lacking some empirical testing for quite some time because I was lacking a spectrometer/colorimeter. And I'm not just going to fix that going forward, I went overboard and retested Everything from the past that I could get my hands on - with some Surprising results!

Can't believe you did all of that testing and managed to make a concise, short video packed with useful information. underrated!

I’m not sure, I still feel like it could have been more concise 😂

Awesome vid, and a very impressive test result table. I'm just wondering though, for the colour temperature difference, maybe you should have used the amount of Mired shift for your final calculation instead of just simply subtracting the K value. Kelvin shifts not the same amount as mired shift, but if we want to match the colour temp without having access to spectrometer measurements, we should usually use the amount of mired shift to change it. Unless there comes another problem, where with each light their kelvin shift doesn't even match up to the mired shift, making any number you see on the setting have an inconsistent amount of shift, then that would be a huge headache.

Great vid Wes. I would like to see a test between your HP330 portable spectrometer CCT CRI Lux tester and the Sekonic SPECTROMETER C-800. Is the cheaper one as accurate? If so, that is a $1,289.00 difference. Thats crazy

Unfortunately I can’t afford the Sekonic (it’s $2500 where I live) and there’s nowhere to rent one around here.

You definitely give up some things in usability with the Chinese model. It’s slow, lacks Tint measurement (can be gleaned from more complex numbers, though), TLCI, no flash compatibility (there’s a more expensive model for that) and doesn’t interface very easily.

Hi Wes - who makes this spectrometer - never heard about this product...

Hangzou LCE Intelligent Detection Instruments. They mostly just sell to industrial customers in China. Their website isn’t even accessible outside of the country haha.

@@WesPerry strange - how did you come across them in the first place?

Just a random find on Aliexpress lead me down a rabbit hole of many, many different spectrometers from this manufacturer. There are ones designed for UV, infrared, photometrics, colorimetry, flashing lights, etc etc. I got one of the cheaper models, as I wouldn’t want to invest $1000 without first trying out the brand to see if it’s legit. They seem to sell a fair amount of them, though.

@@WesPerryInteresting. I think spectrometers are a must for video shooters (and some photo shooters who use constant lights as well). The problem is that they are very expensive. We use the C800 but we can't recommend it to everybody due to its price tag. There will be other manufacturers with more affordable options but it will take time.
