      yeah I love this guy's thoroughness but he is way too harsh on linearity. There's nothing wrong with linear gameplay, in fact non-linear gameplay has been overdone so much nowadays, that super linear is almost preferred.

    • @somni2246
      @somni2246 4 роки тому +24

      @@Dorraj yea, while I do really love open-worlds and enjoy exploration, those things can only keep me engaged for so long. For instance, I really enjoyed BOTW up until I found all of the towers, and thus pretty much knew what every area had to offer, before the game started to become kind of boring and repetitive for me; there just wasn't enough interesting story or characters to keep me engaged.
      What really draws me into a game is the narrative, and feeling fully immersed in that narrative. The ideal game for me is one that blends a beautifully crafted open- world, that feels alive and realistic, with complex characters and stories that exist in that world. For this reason The Witcher 3 is the best open-world adventure I've ever played; it has a wonderfully crafted linear narrative that also allows for some exploration and player choice, and has complex characters that you feel connected to. In the Witcher, the tightly constructed narrative improves the feeling of it's world rather than detracting from it. It really has the best balance of immersion, exploration and story, in my opinion.
      My other three favorite games, KOTOR 2, VTMB and Fallout:New Vegas, all have this blend of immersive atmosphere and interesting story and characters, though only the latter employs a more non-linear story. I'm also a massive fan of the Bioshock series which, again, have very linear narratives yet also have some of the most engrossing environments/atmospheres.

    • @Dorraj
      @Dorraj 4 роки тому +27

      @@somni2246 mhm, I think an open world/narrative is only good when the quality of the narrative is high everywhere. There is no point in making an open world game if most of everything in that world is dry and bland. I'd MUCH rather have a hyper linear story than an extremely bland open world.

      I like these videos, but my biggest criticism is that he seems to have a view of what makes a good Zelda dungeon that is very different from mine. For me, a good dungeon is one with interesting puzzles that make use of a novel mechanic that is implemented well. Backtracking in a dungeon can be good if I’m backtracking after I’ve gained a new ability and am looking for places to use it Backtracking sucks when it means desperately looking around previously explored rooms looking for something I was also able to do but missed because it was hidden in an obtuse way. It’s fine to be stuck in a room because you haven’t figured out the puzzle yet, it sucks to be stuck and not even have any idea which room you need to go to. Apparently this guy LOVES that though.

    • @nathanielsmith1905
      @nathanielsmith1905 4 роки тому +8

      Dorraj I agree but I’ve found that often when Zelda dungeons go for the more linear approach, namely those in wind waker, they drop the ball on making linearity interesting. Instead of ramping up the challenge and relative complexity of the rooms as they go, it pretty much feels like you’re just walking unobstructed from one simple and easy room to the next. That’s why the added challenge of finding the path makes it more fun in these cases. Linearity also forces the developers to put emphasis on continually developing certain themes for their puzzles, whereas with dungeons that are a bit less linear they are able to get away with doing something else instead. For example in Jabu Jabu’s belly in Ocarina of Time, instead of trying to make boomerang puzzles/combat scenarios that gradually increase in complexity, they focused more on testing the player’s spacial awareness and getting them to understand how different parts of the dungeon fit together.

    Quick note: Midna IS the Triforce of Wisdom holder. That’s what saves her. That’s why Zelda disappears right after giving it to her. That’s why Midna isn’t hurt by Light and why she can chill on Link’s back in the regular world. Zelda’s “sacrifice” was her giving up the only thing protecting her up to that point. There’s actually a scene where Midna flinches from light because she’s not used to not being hurt by light. Midna states right after Zelda’s sacrifice: “you’ve given me all that you have, though I did not want it.”

    I think one of the biggest, and under-recognized strengths, is the characters. Midna is kind of a douche at first, but slowly gains your respect as you work together and help each other out. The villagers and townspeople (the mayor, Telma, that one village girl who gives you Epona's charm) feel normal at first- but as you help save the world, they do anything and everything they can to help you. Even some of the animals you talk to or interact with have a unique feel to them that's hard to explain. And I just haven't seen these sorts of characters in any other Zelda game.

    • @byronlyons3548

      Honestly, just like Mr.Bierbaron said, all but Midna aren't worth considering. So much talking, screen time, and such with them (which is very little to begin with), yet they don't do much or anything to make most people care about them. Such as this video talking about Collin's development to save one of the other kids is different from people to people, mostly because time spent with Collin personally, is little to none at all. So to other people, that moment with him is very rushed, and possibly undeserved. Just like how KingK says Princess Zelda being there at the end with Link for the final battles, and having the Triforce of Wisdom is undeserved, due to the lack of characterization and screen time of her (even though the same applies to Ganondorf, despite what he says).
      It really all comes down to how very little screen time every character gets in this game, and how they aren't much different than the way they were from the start. All very much unlike Midna, when it comes to the character department.
      The talking to the animals? Hoo boy, yeah, no. Another downside when it comes to the Wolf Link mechanics, which makes it look even worser than before, of just how much of a underutilized gimmick it is. At this point, I would rather take the use of sailing in the boat of Wind Waker over it, even during the original where you had the terrible Triforce fetch quest on top of it. Also there's not much of a uniqueness about them at all, that warrants acknowledgement of the mechanic's existence.

      @warioland523 6 років тому +15

      Yeah that's like the only thing the original Wind Waker benefits from over HD. In Wind Waker Tingle gave you the Tingle Tuner. While it wasn't the best concept in the world having to connect your GBA to the GameCube to even use the darn thing the thing is you could still go and use it at any time. Even if you played the original game now and had the right tools you could use the Tuner. With HD he gives you the Tingle Bottle instead which was of course used with Miiverse. But without Miiverse the bottle becomes nothing more then a worthless item that sits in your inventory gathering dust throughout the entire game. Nintendo didn't need to get rid of Miiverse even and if they did they could have just replaced it with something different yet still worked. But nope. Drop the whole thing. So stamps in 3-D World? Only there for completion now. Stamps in Twilight Princess for the Wii-U? Useless. Tingle Bottle in Wind Waker for the Wii-U? Also useless. It's like the Wii-U equal of the termination of wi-fi for the original Wii. Mario Kart Wii suffered from a massive loss of content due to this. Did you know Mario Kart Wii had bosses? Well if you just found this out now guess what? You can't fight these bosses because they were exclusive to online wi-fi matches.

      Past decade or so has seen a huge rise in demand for open world “fuck it do whatever you want” games. And ironically now everyone is hating them. It’s just constant shifting demand in genres. Happens all the time. Remember when Battle Royales were fucking EVERYWHERE? Now you ONLY hear about what Apex fortnite and CoD? Trends come and go. Open world games were hella trendy this past decade, and I believe a bit longer than that. And as we all know, shifting trends equals trashing previous trends. Once everyone started demanding open world games, regardless of the quality of them (cough far cry assassins creed shadow of mordor cough cough), the very same people started hating on the past linear games. It’s not the games fault
      for being developed around a certain point in time, and with certain trends and expectations. People were hating linear story-driven games because “but my freedom and exploration and grindy progression!!!” (Not saying anything’s wrong with that. Like seriously that’s what open worlds games are. Not bad, just their own genre).

      You can make a gorgeous world but if there's NOTHING to do, its the reason why I would prefer having linearity instead since it wouldnt hurt as much and I believe would help the team make more actual content. Look at PSO2NGS for this very example
      At the other side of the spectrum, you have BOTW where it has a massive open world with actual stuff and many things at play for you to explore and play around in. Which is the reason people "want" open world environments but its tremendously hard to pull off a good open world game

    One thing I feel like you neglected to mention, that adds to the quality of the story, is how Link's initial goal upon setting out isn't to save Hyrule, but to save the kidnapped kids. Upon finding the kids and returning Kakariko back from the Twilight, that goal is taken care of since he knows that they are safe, but his debt to Midna remains and becomes the new focus. Link's end goal changes a few times throughout the story, which makes how different characters' motivations interact with his own more complex.

I had the same thought too, considering people make little 'amiibo pogs' on Etsy for all your favourite amiibos, typically eliminating the rarity of the NFC chips INSIDE the amiibo rather than the amiibo themselves, which as someone who can't give two shits about wanting to collect them, and instead caring more about the functionality they provide, this is a god send. For me the most frustrating shortcoming of Twilight Princess was actually the difficulty curve: The game NEVER gets harder than it is at the beginning, but it feeds you so many hearts that it is absolutely trivial by the end. Almost nothing does more than a quarter heart of damage. Ganon's pig form running you over costs 1/4 heart! 1/4 heart from getting trampled by a giant demonic pig! Same when the dragon knocked you to the ground! 1/4 heart for falling ten stories??? It crushed my sense of achievement, because I felt like I hadn't actually achieved anything when I killed any of the bosses, especially the final fight with Ganandorf. They all posed no threat, and obviously involved the dungeon item in some way.
    I agree with you that the more common criticisms of TP are totally over-blown. There was a ton of content in the "empty" hyrule field, and the intro is effective at setting up the story and not extremely long unless you are re-playing the game. Wolf link is very fun to play as despite being a bit under-developed, and those sections in the twilight world are just so cool I never noticed the number of tears of light.

One thing worth noting that I don't think you mentioned is how returning items have been changed to make them feel fresh. You touched on this with the iron boots and how they were used to magnetize Link to walls ans ceilings, and how they were used in the sky temple to hold link in place and activate hanging switches. I really like how they took the boomerang and added wind to it to add a cool twist and allow for some new puzzles. Same goes for the bombs and their ability to combine with arrows, the clawshot's new ability to hang from ceilings and raise and lower, and of course being able to use two later on. In Twilight Princess It didn't feel like the same old song and dance when you got items that have become staples because they though up cool and unique ways to change them and add new utility to them.

    I totally agree with your classification of this game as an "epic", that's what set it apart from other Zeldas. The focus on adventure and progression, the constant introduction to new settings, it widened the scale of the game. Like you said, someone says "adventure", you think Twilight Princess. This is my favorite console Zelda too, it stuck with the linearity and made for an incredible experience. It's my second favorite in the series right behind Phantom Hourglass (fight me scrubs!).
    Something you said at the end really stuck with me though, it's something I've been writing and rewriting various ways myself for an RE6 video. You said that to you, this is Zelda. Even though it's not like the originals, it's still a great game. People obviously won't agree with that because they're purists, by I don't understand why deviating from a series norm is bad for Zelda. I mean, look at RE4, it was nothing like the previous games but people accepted it for some reason. Then RE6 comes around, completely different again, but people hate it. Same thing with MGS.
    I really dislike that argument that moving away from the rest of the series is wrong. A huge series like Zelda can only evolve by changing, it doesn't need a formula to follow, different genres and formats make the games interesting.
    I don't even know what ai'm saying. I need to go to school. Love you kingKool 💋

      RamHoot I totally agree, and I think one of the reasons BotW is being received so well is because, like most Zelda games, it feels different. It's a polar opposite of TP and Skyward Sword. But it doesn't signify that Zelda can only work when it's nonlinear, because imo the switch (pun intended) brought with it several weaknesses. Like I said in my OOT video, it's hard to have a tightly paced epic progression with so much player freedom. Though the freedom of BotW is probably its strongest aspect, it loses a bit of that replayability of Twilight Princess, which will always have a core linear progression to come back to. For BotW, once you've explored that huge world, do you get the same memorable dungeon design or story on multiple playthroughs?
      I think it's very limiting to hold any series to a strict formula. It harms creativity.

      RamHoot plus what all you said sounds a lot like my thoughts on Metroid Fusion. Sure it's more linear than the other games, but it allowed for tightly paced progression and a really epic horror atmosphere that does a good job building up the SA-X that just isn't present in any other Metroid game out there (from what I've played at least), and hey, that feeling of isolation is still there and accounted for. I feel like that's proof that Metroid doesn't need to be completely nonlinear to still be Metroid

    Not an unpopular opinion. Twilight Princess is my favorite.
    Between story, visuals, puzzles, difficulty and overall gameplay, as much as I didn't like the idea when I was ranking my favorite Zeldas... I just find it superior to everything else. I might prefer the story in Majora's Mask, I might prefer the visuals in Wind Waker, the puzzles in Link Between Worlds or the difficulty of Adventure of Link but Twilight Princess suffers the least overall. Wind Waker is too short, Link Between Worlds doesn't have that vastness and scope of 3D Zeldas, and Adventure of Link... well... at least it's a challenge and mastering the sword is rewarding!
    That being said, I'd sooner pop in Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time, my previously held Zelda favorites. But let's be real. The story just doesn't compare. And the mid story event from Twilight Princess was far more impactful to me than the other two. This game is longer, the puzzles are trickier, and Ganon is a blast (as well as the slew of bosses in this game). As an overall experience, I think Twilight has the most value.

    The fact you say it's more linear like Ocarina of Time just makes me want to play much more. I loved Breath of the Wild and all, but I honestly am so sick of the nonsense idea that games being linear is a bad thing. It's not only not a bad thing, but it's often the best thing a game can be. Even games that are somewhat open almost always fail to deliver the entertainment that a linear game can give and the VERY few open games that can deliver entertainment that's comparable to a linear game need to be played in a fully linear way in order to pull that off.
    When I play open world games, I do like to do side stuff and I love to explore, but every little bit of that dilutes the core experience or the main quest. That's why for me, open world games almost never give me as strongly entertaining of an experience that a 10 hour linear game can.
    Even God of War, I felt like I spent too much time doing side stuff to the point that I could easily see that it took away from the absolutely brilliant main journey (which is my fault because I was trying to 100%/platinum the game before playing the final few missions, but still. What's the point of a more open game if you need to ignore all the extra content in order to get the most focused and pure experience???).
    So when people use linear as a derogative term it pisses me off because it's anything but a bad thing. Frankly, there can be too much of a good thing and I really don't understand these people that always want everything to be open, and have too much player freedom, and can't enjoy a more well crafted but shorter and more limited experience. Don't you people have lives of your own where you have enough freedom that you don't need every single game to let you do a bunch of chores and let you decide almost everything? I just don't get it and I never will. I feel like most of these people either have never played the hundreds of great purely linear games, or they're just so jaded on gaming that they can't help but nitpick and cry when a game doesn't let them do exactly what they want to when they want to. Also I'm sure there's some dumbass kids too that think all games are supposed to be open world, similar to the dumbass kids that think all games should be multiplayer that don't know any better yet lol

    • @vcdonovan5943
      @vcdonovan5943 5 років тому +10

      Open worlds need to provide a good reason to venture off the beaten path. An open world Zelda game could provide explorers with unique discoveries *they* find *on their own* instead of being lead by the hand to them.
      The problem with BotW is that yeah sure you can go anywhere do anything, but you're only ever doing the same thing over and over again and finding all the same disposable stuff. What difference does it make where you decide to go and when, when all you're getting is virtually the same thing? (health and stamina upgrades, additional inventory space, a massive hoard of virtually identical weapons and armor...)
      To make it worthwhile, the game has to provide something unlike anything else you could discover by venturing out your way. Like the fire rod in ALttP or handy spells like in OoT. Even that ice cave with the sliding block puzzle in TP is a unique discovery because it's such a bizarre and fascinating location. There are numerous fan theories that just try to explain why the place even exists! And you only get the same old heart container for exploring it, but the location itself is its own reward.

Other games definitely fail at this because it basically just became a trend because Skyrim was so successful. Which is not a bad thing. But just makes people overlook great linear games like twilight princess which in my opinion is one of the greatest games of all time. Up there with the Witcher 3. I mean all the Zelda games are GREAT just twilight princess really was the upgraded OoT we all wanted. I mean even the soundtrack in twilight princess is a lot more iconic than anything in BotW.

      I definitely prefer games with a structure to them and I suppose most of those games would be more on the linear side. I played Borderlands 2 up to character level erm, 26 I think and realised it was boring as fuck and I think it was because it was, like you say, a bunch of chores. I liked the characters, the humour and the look of it but so what? Metroid games are not open world in the usual sense but nor are they totally linear. If at some point you fancy going off on a wander to see what power ups you've missed or can get now that you have a new ability then you can, I like that. The last open world game I really got into was GTA San Andreas and I know every street and tree in it, but that was a long time ago. I don't know if its me or the games but the newer GTA's just don't make me want to explore, in fact I find them boring, maybe it is me..

    I couldn't agree more. The only part I disagree with is about Midna and the Triforce of Wisdom. While I agree having her wield it is interesting, I was always under the impression that Zelda bequeathed the Triforce to Midna (falling into a coma of sorts as a result and becoming Ganon's plaything). Midna then resolves to return the Triforce to Zelda in order to save her. So in short, my disagreement isn't that she shouldn't have it, but that she actually did have it.
    On the spinner, my complaint was how useless it was in the overworld. In contrast to dungeons, in the overworld it's slow and useless unless there's a track. This was the closest Zelda came to a skateboard and there's nowhere to exploit it.

    Yeah I personally agree with 100% of this. I feel like Twilight Princess only started getting a bad rep when these hyper-detailed analyses (which I happen to love) stared coming out. Most of those videos focus on the game in a purely mechanical sense, almost robotically. That and of course Egoraptor's Sequelitis and gaming philosophy, which I only agree with a few very specific points of. I know that Zelda games don't tend to tell very original stories, but they're fantasy epics. That's what they are. To ignore that element of them misses the point to me. Everyone loves ripping on TP's prolonged opening, but to me it's a big part of what makes the story so effective, even on repeat playthroughs. When you rewatch Lord of the Rings, you don't just skip Frodo's time at the Shire, it's part of the whole experience. Ordon Village is a very vital part of the overall immersion.
    I know it's cliche but Ocarina of Time is the game that got me into videogames. I was already aware of them and had played some at friends' houses and enjoyed them, but Ocarina was the game that made me say "Wow, I need to OWN this so I can explore this incredible world anytime I want." Mario 64 didn't make me say that, Smash 64 didn't make me say that, Yoshi's Island didn't make me say that (those are all games I sampled before Ocarina), but Ocarina made me say that, and it wasn't just because it was fucking fun or tightly paced or the designers threw me into the action within the first 60 seconds or any of that bullshit. It was because it immersed the crap out of me, it captured my fucking imagination and presented me with an opportunity to truly LIVE the kinds of adventures I had only read in books or watched in movies up until that point.
    Thus, the modern obsession with non-linearity for its own sake and short intro sequences really irks me. That's not to say short intros are bad either, but it comes down to how effectively they are ultimately used. For example I don't happen to like Skyward Sword's opening because Skyloft's reaction to Zelda's disappearance (or lack thereof) retroactively soured my perception of that town as a community in general. When the Ordon kids are kidnapped and you make it back there, you feel the effects of that loss strongly and immediately, the whole town is in turmoil, the parents are depressed and terrified. When Zelda falls away from Skyloft nothing FUCKING changes there, I feel like only her fucking dad even noticed. It just made me not give a shit.

    • @pskilla5023
      @pskilla5023 6 років тому +4

      I agree with everything you said. LOZ is at its best when it tells an epic fantasy story, combined with fast-paced action, stunning visuals, and superior dungeon design. People hate on TP's opening for being too long, even though it sets the scene, and teaches basic gameplay mechanics, so the first dungeon doesn't have to be a tutorial level, but for some reason, they seem to give WW's dreaded tri force quest a free pass, even though it brings the action to a grinding halt, and has absolutely nothing interesting. As for it not being an open world, and being linear, people need to recognize that linearity is not necessarily a bad thing. It builds narrative, and gives structure to the game, creating that epic fantasy experience some people relish. Really, open worlds are mostly a fad, which was made popular by the likes of Skyrim. But making LOZ open world just for the sake of being open world hasn't really worked out well. And the more linear style works, so why change it?

      I would'nt call it unique at all story wise its an oot two and atmosphere wise majoras masks lightest parts could be darker and the wolf is kind of like a bad transformation mask if anything windwaker or majora are the most unique for how vastly they contrast each other in almost every way

    I really like the world building of TP (story, character, city, dungeon, music, etc). TP have a lot of my favorite zelda dungeon (Snowpeak Ruins, Arbiter Ground, Temple of Time, Lakebed Temple, etc). Also you can transform into a wolf lol. How you can't like this game. 😁

    I get that you talked about Midna in a separate video but I thought it deserved to be stressed more that she was by far the best companion character of any Zelda game. Overall, this was an enjoyable retrospective that I mostly agreed with. While I acknowledge that BoTW has more content to offer players, I still prefer this game for its story, atmosphere and soundtrack.

      What I like about TP compared to BotW is that it's very replayable. It's long enough that it gives you a good, enjoyable gameplay experience, but short enough that it doesn't take 2 years to finish, and can be replayed over and over. While the exploration in BotW is cool the first time, once you've seen everything, there's nothing really that special about it anymore, and since that's the majority of the game, there's not much of any reason to play it more than once, except to test your sanity with Master Mode. TP, though, has an experience that can be relived time and time again, to mostly the same effect as the first playthrough. That's one thing I also enjoy about Ocarina, which I wish was more common in the series.

    i came to this video, waiting for you to bash twilight princess like all my zelda fan friends do. it's the only zelda game i've ever played, and so my viewpoint might be biased. but i think the adventure in zelda twilight princess was amazing. i loved the story, i loved the locations. it was just amazing.

    I suspect that if you ask anyone what their favourite Zelda game is, the answer will always be the first one they played. These games make an impact so strong that it's hard to actually move on to the next one sometimes, because you're so invested in the feeling of your first game. OoT for me.

    • @awsome182
      @awsome182 2 роки тому +4

      Well, I would disagree on that. My first Zelda was OoT, then WW, then TP and BotW (I've never owned a Nintendo console, so I was only playing at my friends place, so I had to play whatever Zelda games they had). And TP is my all-time favourite one. Then comes OoT, then WW and then BotW (which I didn't like much, tbh).

    I just have to say...wow. I’ve never seen someone as passionate about Zelda as I thought I was. You have a truly dizzying amount of knowledge on Zelda and the mechanics of each game and how they consciously and unconsciously affect the way you perceive the game. You’ve earned my sub. Wonderful video and series of videos.

    I think the "Wolf Link is weak" problem could have been fixed by giving Midna more attacks. Her cool hair could have been used way more. And that feeling of vulnerability when she is injured would have not been lost.

      It annoys me that you can't finish enemies as a wolf. I know technically it's a sword technique but they literally already have an animation for it with the Poe's.

    Twilight Princess was my #1 favorite Zelda game. And I would definitely agree with Zelda's sacrifice, it seemed...well lame. Midna is my favorite princess. She sticks with you through out the game, you don't even know she is a princess for the majority of the game. It really makes me think, what if they had Zelda be a little more involved in the story than just "the princess who needs to be saved". I'm not trying to say "make Zelda the protagonist who goes on the journey to save Link" because that just sounds dumb as hell to me. Just a more prominent role, even if it is just getting to see what she is doing during the time she is waiting for the hero to arrive. That is something I enjoyed about Wind Waker: Zelda not being a useless character that is just there to be rescued and look pretty. She is beside you, even if you don't know it at the start.
    It would have been a great twist if Midna was the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom. I never even thought of that possibility before. Why does the the reincarnation of Zelda have to always be the literal same person? I mean, they switched things up a bit in Wind Waker, and if Midna WAS the new incarnation of the mortal Goddess for that time period it would be an interesting new development.What if "Zelda" wasn't always the incarnation of the Goddess, even though it is the name passed down from generation to generation in the royal family. Anyway, I guess I'm just Fan Boying now. Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game, but I don't believe for a moment that it is "perfectly done". there are things that could have been done better, but in the end a game needs to be appreciated for what it did right IF it is a good game. And this was indeed a good game.
