  • This is Acorn - a lovely little New Forest Pony who just likes to GO!
    In this video, Barry shows us the progress she's made from speeding out of the yard at any opportunity, to walking calmly up the road when asked.
    He also discusses how a horse's mental age can affect training and how some may benefit from being 'turned away' and brought back into work after a break.

    I've never been fussed if horses just have one or no white socks at all, as there still special companions.

    Poor horses have so much to cope with on the roads theses days...to think years ago there wouldnt be anything other ,then horses on the roads.
    But you show them how to cope Barry..great little pony.

    Another lovely video! Thank you! Considering my dear old man has a great deal of GO, especially at his fox trot. Getting there!!! Ill have more video myself to share with you soon. And although i use a gentle bit now, on a loose rein, i do have a soft rubber bit on order, because if i can increase comfort and happiness for my horse... Why not! Enjoyable video

    Im stunned this is the spit of our newforest I gave up driving about 14 years ago...so many answers to the prob including my priority for wanting her to be super solid for small kids!!. Many many insights in the one video. Like this one she just likes to get on with stuff but she also knows how to listen to other opinions so not at all a lost cause for driving, just needs more taking out in traffic and laying down more experience, My only question is she has had a lot of riding and few years mostly turned away in a small group and she is 20 years young :). I am praying you will be able to take her on for training soon and I d love to be there in part at some point for a day praps of the training if at all poss. Best regards, always encouraged by your work. :) :)

    What is a jig trot? Can you film one from the side? I am American so it might be a translation issue. I have had horses for 40 years.

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  4 роки тому

      It's a slow trot about the pace of a fast walk, 'jigging' up and down.

    0:34 Those gloves...left has 4 fingers and thumb, right has 3 fingers and thumb?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  4 роки тому +1

      It's not the gloves! Baz is missing his little finger on his right hand. He says it doesn't bother him much, except for when he wants to use it to communicate with the horse very minutely down the reins - particularly in team work.

    • @diesel_dawg
      @diesel_dawg 4 роки тому +1

      @@barryhook2 Thanks for explaining! I thought the gloves had been made wrong but Barry just kept them anyway. lol

    I’m looking for soft rubber bits for miniature horses. Does anyone know who sells these?

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Sara, bits for minis can be very hard to find! A client of ours who has miniature horses uses Poponcini Bits, but these can be very expensive. We are currently working on our own design, but as of yet have not found a material durable and flexible enough for the job.

      Hyperbike.com for Miniatures they are all about their needs. In the USA for 20 years are more.

    Has your view point changed in the last few years? You more recently said you don't want to horse to think, it's just the motor and is to do as you say and nothing else. In this video you say it should be confident and you don't make them do anything.

    • @barryhook2
      @barryhook2  2 роки тому

      We do not force a horse to do something - a horse trained by fear and force will one day come across something it fears more than you. We want a horse to look to us for reassurance if it absolutely has to, but we would prefer them to have their own confidence to rely on before they look to us - i.e. most things they can manage on their own, but if they are frightened they look to us for extra reassurance. The horse is the 'motive power' in that they should not be making decisions such as speed or directional changes and should follow instructions - in that way they should not 'think for themselves', but in terms of dealing with things they come across (such as an unusual looking vehicle etc.) they should be using their own confidence first to continue on their way as they have been asked, before looking to the driver for extra reassurance / repeat instruction. Hope that makes sense!
