Yevgeny Kissin quotes Vladimir Sofronitsky on Franz Schubert, and to me, he captures the essence of my feelings about Schubert precisely:
The great Russian pianist Vladimir Sofronitsky once said, ‘Of all the great composers, Schubert was the best human being. Nobody had such a wonderful soul as Schubert.’ This expresses my feelings precisely. Some of Schubert’s divine music (like that of no other composer) is just filled with this feeling of goodness, of kindness that can bring one to tears of inner joy and happiness and make one aware of the link between aesthetics and ethics.

First hearing of this, and in over half a century of auditing a mountain of piano recordings, these are performances that beggar verbal description. This is an incomparable gold standard of interpretation of 19th century piano music that I've seldom if ever heard equaled much less approached. It's all here - declamation, phrasing, tone, vocal inflection of the melody, tempo modification, dynamics focused into a stellar recreation of Schubert-Liszt. And it comes very close to what I've imagined Liszt's playing to be like.

Sofronitsky is a POET in his playing and PLAYS SO POETICALLY, speaking a beautiful soul as he performs and plays Schubert-Liszt: 10 Lieder. There are no words that can describe my happiness when I listen to Sofronitsky in everything he plays, HE SPEAKS LIKE A LYRICAL POET in his musical playing and artistry. Thank you for this share again, Margo Beloved!

Sofronitsky's an absolute genius! His fingers are reciting sublime poetry!
"Although little known in the West, never having toured or recorded there, Sofronitsky was held in the highest regard in his native land. Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels looked up to Sofronitsky as their master, and famously, when Sofronitsky once drunkenly proclaimed that Richter was a genius, in return Richter toasted him and proclaimed him a god. Upon hearing of Sofronitsky's death, Gilels was reputed to have said that 'the greatest pianist in the world has died.'"

Sviatoslav Richter went to visit Vladimir Sofronitsky. The door was opened and Sofronitsky greeted the unexpected quest with a surprising greetings "Genius". After some thinking Richter - some years younger - had answered with "God". By Sofronitsky's funeral Emil Giles had kissed his hands, forehead and told that here is the corpse of the greatest pianist. To my reading both the two great (de facto autoditact) pianists had the right reading. There is nothing like today. Maria Yudina, Dmitry Shostakovich and Vladimir Sofronitsky studied together under Leonid Nikolayev. This will hardly happen again, on this level.

Der Doppelgaenger and Die Stadt are amazing; truly terrifying. Hard to believe this music was written in about 1825. Schubert anticipates late Liszt by half a century. And Sofronitsky plays as if he's possessed. Wonderful! Who plays like that today? Is it because we all lead too comfortable lives? Discuss ... Thanks for posting!

Indeed Sofronitsky was a genius to play like this. I find behind any magic Sofronisky interpretation a deep sadness . Such a sensitive artist that saw tragedies like the 2nd World war (he was in Leningrad when German army besieged it), & Stalin regime was able to mirror the drama of an entire generation towards any music he played: an outstanding artist.

I've found a new God to worship. Horowitz, fascinating, febrile, has gotten old after 30 years. Sofrontisky reminds me of him in his operatic quality, power, separation of melodic lines, but there is no crude showmanship (sudden fortissimi), few mistakes, and a kind of golden haze over the whole thing that must be party the result of the piano (and unlacquered hammerheads) and the rich use of pedal.

      1960 in the Moscow conservatory.
Live recording, you hear e.g. a cough around 1:39-1:40 ( Der Müller und der Bach), of a person, lucky to participate this magnificent moment; later on more coughs.
First I heard and read about Sofronitzki in the early 70s, and later learned to know 5 of these Liszt transcriptions of Schubert songs from the CD Harmonia mundi HMA 1905 169 ( ed. 1986). On that CD the identical cough at 1:39 (same song), etc. The CD gives that recording date and place (as far as for these 5 songs).
Sofronitzki was born 1901, so he was about 59 ys old and died the next year, 1961.
I suppose, nowadays are several other audio re-editions of these live recordings, e.g. the source of this YT upload.
"Der Müller und der Bach" is one of the finest examples of singing on a piano you can experience in your lifetime.

Sofronitsky is the favorite pianist of several famous Russian pianists. In the 1990s Melodya/BMG released a box set called "Russian Piano School". The ten best Russian pianists of all, in the opinion of the producers and general Russian opinion. It was eleven cds -- because Sofronitsky was given two discs in recognition of his special status.

  • @michelrocker9044
    @michelrocker9044 4 роки тому +3

Why is there Barcarolle in the description written, when it is Auf dem Wasser zu singen? And honestly, everything is perfect, however the tempo in "Barcarolle" or "Auf dem Wasser zu singen" is just too fast and over the top,, the beginning should be much slower and then it should increase the speed, it is a song, it should not be all the time in one tempo, especially in a tempo which is near to presto. But I like all the other songs, beautiful performance anyway, it is just shame, he had to play that Barcarolle so fast, but it is beautiful anyway, but still could be better and just by wider contrast in tempo. Except that, there is nothing, what I disagree with.

What about Erlkonig? Largo one moment, presto the next. And this is a good thing? On one side, the frantic, hallucinating child, but the equally frantic (superficially calming) father on the other.

He is making music. It is what real musicians do. You'll also notice that even though it is a transcription of a Lied, nobody is singing.
