Yevgeny Kissin quotes Vladimir Sofronitsky on Franz Schubert, and to me, he captures the essence of my feelings about Schubert precisely:
The great Russian pianist Vladimir Sofronitsky once said, ‘Of all the great composers, Schubert was the best human being. Nobody had such a wonderful soul as Schubert.’ This expresses my feelings precisely. Some of Schubert’s divine music (like that of no other composer) is just filled with this feeling of goodness, of kindness that can bring one to tears of inner joy and happiness and make one aware of the link between aesthetics and ethics.
Да!
Sofronitsky is truly one of the piano gods! That Frühlingsglaube was simply out of this world!
First hearing of this, and in over half a century of auditing a mountain of piano recordings, these are performances that beggar verbal description. This is an incomparable gold standard of interpretation of 19th century piano music that I've seldom if ever heard equaled much less approached. It's all here - declamation, phrasing, tone, vocal inflection of the melody, tempo modification, dynamics focused into a stellar recreation of Schubert-Liszt. And it comes very close to what I've imagined Liszt's playing to be like.
Sofronitsky is a POET in his playing and PLAYS SO POETICALLY, speaking a beautiful soul as he performs and plays Schubert-Liszt: 10 Lieder. There are no words that can describe my happiness when I listen to Sofronitsky in everything he plays, HE SPEAKS LIKE A LYRICAL POET in his musical playing and artistry. Thank you for this share again, Margo Beloved!
Some of the most beautiful piano playing ever recorded.
He simply has learned the music, forgotten and plays, free.
Liszt was so astonishing. This pianist was astonishing too.
Sofronitsky, Sofronitsky, Sofronitsky,

He has mastered the piano in every respect a genius
Absolutely divine, sublime music and performance of Vladimir Sofronitsky. Absolutely beautiful and heavenly! Thank you Margo Beloved!
Absolutely marvellous, played with the highest sensitvity. His playing is characterized by an ecstatic spark.
Thanks a lot!
His Schubert is sorrowful and full of pathos, and unrivaled, and outclassing
Sofronitsky's an absolute genius! His fingers are reciting sublime poetry!
"Although little known in the West, never having toured or recorded there, Sofronitsky was held in the highest regard in his native land. Sviatoslav Richter and Emil Gilels looked up to Sofronitsky as their master, and famously, when Sofronitsky once drunkenly proclaimed that Richter was a genius, in return Richter toasted him and proclaimed him a god. Upon hearing of Sofronitsky's death, Gilels was reputed to have said that 'the greatest pianist in the world has died.'"
gimli gloin, are you acquainted to mightysmeagol?
It went deep into my heart..
Beautiful ,Sublime, out of this world.
An old recording bur so vibrant and captivating. Enthralling.
Hermosas. Te transladan a otra época.
"Frühlingslaube" and "Litanie" nearly moves me to tears. Such beatiuil emotionally deep music.
Yes! I agree!
Never heard "Litanie" played so well as here. Absolutely magical and very moving!
Stunning! Immortal by being exceptional 👏👏👏
Fantastic
Liszt regarded Schubert as the most lyrical of all composers.
Sofronitsky is never explicit, but his poetic sentiment is self-explanatory.
Stunning, exquisite, transformative artistry......
Sviatoslav Richter went to visit Vladimir Sofronitsky. The door was opened and Sofronitsky greeted the unexpected quest with a surprising greetings "Genius". After some thinking Richter - some years younger - had answered with "God". By Sofronitsky's funeral Emil Giles had kissed his hands, forehead and told that here is the corpse of the greatest pianist. To my reading both the two great (de facto autoditact) pianists had the right reading. There is nothing like today. Maria Yudina, Dmitry Shostakovich and Vladimir Sofronitsky studied together under Leonid Nikolayev. This will hardly happen again, on this level.
These times are over .
Antti Sairanen is there a UA-cam regulation that a retelling of this anecdote must be posted under every single video of Sofronitsky?
And nowadays you have people like Lang Lang who are in my opinion awful. Most of them at least.
Antti Sairanen Great comment, thank you !

So rich harmony, wow
unique articulation and phrasing
What a fine and beautiful upload! Thank you very much.
Thank You Fore This Upload , Very Much
just amazing...
Beautiful! Thanks for posting!
Sublime! Poesía en cada nota...
The playing is something divine - but so is also the grand, his private pre WW2 Bechstein concert grand; have had an oppoturnity to play few chords on this. The sound was impressive (under my most non pianist fingers, too) as the deeply worn ivory keys were.
Only - this is not a Bechstein, it's a Steinway...
najpiekniejsze wykonanie fantazji op 28-t A Skriabina to maestro Sofranicky
Absolutely, I agree! thank you for sharing💐💐........
Der Doppelgaenger and Die Stadt are amazing; truly terrifying. Hard to believe this music was written in about 1825. Schubert anticipates late Liszt by half a century. And Sofronitsky plays as if he's possessed. Wonderful! Who plays like that today? Is it because we all lead too comfortable lives? Discuss ... Thanks for posting!
Indeed Sofronitsky was a genius to play like this. I find behind any magic Sofronisky interpretation a deep sadness . Such a sensitive artist that saw tragedies like the 2nd World war (he was in Leningrad when German army besieged it), & Stalin regime was able to mirror the drama of an entire generation towards any music he played: an outstanding artist.
What's good about anticipating late Liszt?
I play like that.........lol jokes i try and wish. he really is so good i cant stop listening, just wish he was more popular so we could see some videos and concerts. I feel like im betraying my Horowitz but the Russians have something.....for reall i cant stop listening to Aufenthalt,
PS. Schubert my fav composer next to chopin and Rachmaninoff.
In that time, or you supported Hitler and Fascism and the Vatican, or you supported Stalin and those you fighted against Fascism. The one who did not fight would let Fascism win.
Lalala .... and again and again ... the soviet Lied .... Stalin was a Saint and Hitler a demon ..... poor man .....
only the best...thank you!
What a gem!
The Bach is so touching.
The impression of reading Alice in Wonderland / On the Other Side of the Mirror (Lewis Caroll) with my ears ... Same perceptions, same understandings and encodings... With great and rare intelligence, each listening is a constantly renewed state of fullness❤
erlokonig meravigliosa
Excellent performance !!!
Beautiful. Thank you.
Simply sublime!
J'adore!
oh my yes, my favorite The Muller and the Bach
how about Arcadi Volodos?
@@pauwel4310 How about him? Sofronitsky was poet and a pianistic God.
Volodos probably OK for Rach 3, but here we are dealing with serious music, not cheap thrills. As Brendel said, I would not want to overestimate Rachmaninov's abilities as a composer.......
Wonderful

The keyboard is sawn from so high spiritual level.
I've found a new God to worship. Horowitz, fascinating, febrile, has gotten old after 30 years. Sofrontisky reminds me of him in his operatic quality, power, separation of melodic lines, but there is no crude showmanship (sudden fortissimi), few mistakes, and a kind of golden haze over the whole thing that must be party the result of the piano (and unlacquered hammerheads) and the rich use of pedal.
VH was friend of VS. In 1920th they tour together.
wonderfull!
💕💕💕
He was a giant, especially his scriabin playing.
La escuela de de San Pertersburgo
Absolutely beautiful. Does someone know when this was recorded?
1960 in the Moscow conservatory.
Live recording, you hear e.g. a cough around 1:39-1:40 ( Der Müller und der Bach), of a person, lucky to participate this magnificent moment; later on more coughs.
First I heard and read about Sofronitzki in the early 70s, and later learned to know 5 of these Liszt transcriptions of Schubert songs from the CD Harmonia mundi HMA 1905 169 ( ed. 1986). On that CD the identical cough at 1:39 (same song), etc. The CD gives that recording date and place (as far as for these 5 songs).
Sofronitzki was born 1901, so he was about 59 ys old and died the next year, 1961.
I suppose, nowadays are several other audio re-editions of these live recordings, e.g. the source of this YT upload.
"Der Müller und der Bach" is one of the finest examples of singing on a piano you can experience in your lifetime.
Such lyricism...
🥰
You can sometimes hear him hum with the melody, with Gould I am usually annoyed but Sofronitsky is quite in tune :)
Der Müller und der Bach.... Listening to this music reminds me of pianist Son Min-soo, Vladimir Sofronitsky, whom his teacher Russell Sherman admired!
I'm sure there's a reason Yun-chang Lim won the Van Clyburn title!
Am I hearing things, or does he sometimes hum along with the music?
yes, I believe you're correct. It proves that the great artists sing the music, inside or out.
God is speaking
The staircase to heaven is inside your heart; you enter through the door of your soul. Our whole life is but an attempt to find this miraculous entrance. All our deeds are but a timid knocking on this mysterious door and all our hopes are to hear a voice that would respond, 'Come In!'
I honestly never hear of this guy and i must say hes one of my favourites top 2....soooo much feeling..... i just need the sheet music now lol i cant find the same..unless hes doin his own version.
Jacques Richardson you can find them on imslp by searching schubert-Liszt lieder. Good luck though... they are definitely not easy pieces
thanks i found them. already learnt and play Aufenthalt, probably my favourite. next up is der doppelganger and die stadt.

Sofronitsky is the favorite pianist of several famous Russian pianists. In the 1990s Melodya/BMG released a box set called "Russian Piano School". The ten best Russian pianists of all, in the opinion of the producers and general Russian opinion. It was eleven cds -- because Sofronitsky was given two discs in recognition of his special status.
cool Soviet pianist
When is this recorded?
Barcarolle would be Auf dem Wasser zu singen

I'm in ecstasy.
Sofronitsky was in Leningrad during the siege; I wonder what he experienced?

Vladimir Sofronitsky is my favorite pianist and I think Stalin brought him to the WW2 Malta conference. Strange!

Why is there Barcarolle in the description written, when it is Auf dem Wasser zu singen? And honestly, everything is perfect, however the tempo in "Barcarolle" or "Auf dem Wasser zu singen" is just too fast and over the top,, the beginning should be much slower and then it should increase the speed, it is a song, it should not be all the time in one tempo, especially in a tempo which is near to presto. But I like all the other songs, beautiful performance anyway, it is just shame, he had to play that Barcarolle so fast, but it is beautiful anyway, but still could be better and just by wider contrast in tempo. Except that, there is nothing, what I disagree with.
What about Erlkonig? Largo one moment, presto the next. And this is a good thing? On one side, the frantic, hallucinating child, but the equally frantic (superficially calming) father on the other.
He is making music. It is what real musicians do. You'll also notice that even though it is a transcription of a Lied, nobody is singing.
