Thrown together immediately after a walk. I never do this, the album is so good it earned it.

But yeah, this is easily AOTY. The atmosphere, the production, the emotion of the performances, the guitar playing. It all hits me SO hard.

I'm so jealous! Seeing an artist right after they drop their magnum opus is a dream. I'm watching out for shows now.
Thanks! I'm sure I'll hate it after listen 2. Lol

My only wish is that it was with a band, but i think it would be hard to present the songs live, considering you can't really make drums sound like the record in a club.. plus Patrick is a micro budget artist. I did find it weird that as Cindy he does not play guitar and sing simultaneously ever.. literally runs back and forth between the mic and the guitar

It’s astonishing that it has this many songs and is strong from beginning to end

You must listen to "What's Tonight to Eternity?" my favorite album from them! Great review, AOTY for sure!

I have! And both the Women albums. Some Preoccupations KEXP sessions. 2 hours each time in the Diamond Jubilee chamber may have given me Stockholm Syndrome; it reigns supreme (to me!).

You should listen to their other stuff. It's a lot sader, experimental and noisier, but still many bangers and super interesting melodies.

My favorite related project I've heard is Public Strain - Women. TBH I think this 2 hour masterpiece is going to hold me over for a while. It beats the novelty of new.

Diamond Jubilee is the best album I have heard in the past 10 years. This is a rare album that I can listen to all the way through without hitting a wall. It's insane that they're ending the project after this. Some of the influences that I am picking up are King Crimson, Vincent Gallo's When, John Maus / Ariel Pink, My Bloody Valentine, Martha and the Vandellas, The Velvet Underground, many more... there is a mix of sounds that are happening that make something that never existed before. This album is important.

The mention of Vincent Gallo made me click around your channel. If ever there was a UA-cam channel owned by a lover of Diamond Jubilee, it's yours.
Regarding the end of Cindy Lee:
Were I a solo musician in a solo project who just bottled lightning... I might call my 2024 tour my last one as well. Beyond the financial/publicity incentives, It'd also relieve pressure to continue to create and expand after such a monumental multi-year project.
Would you be mad if they lied and dropped another album in 2027? I'd forgive quickly.

@@tonyloafpoundstone lol I'd forgive real quickly... the project is literally better than any character Bowie assumed. This is on another level. There are artists who get some things really perfect and become legendary, this is a whole thing that feels truer than anything resembling it on any level. It's shocking, and musically superior.

This album is so referential to music decades past but still grounded in the present. Musicians yet to be born will hear Diamond Jubilee. The human musical genome must not end in 2024. Our plans are measured in centuries.

It's the only album of the year.

This album is like a social experiment to me. All the fuzz I've heard online and it was kinda disappointment for me, I don't get the hype. I love every album you referenced and still couldn't enjoy it :/

    • @tonyloafpoundstone
      @tonyloafpoundstone  2 місяці тому +3

Alien Lanes is the only good reference I made, looking back. I'd add Olivia Tremor Control.
The hype appears pretty universal but you're not wrong to think that way. Those 60s sunshine pop but haunting songs are not going to be regular listening, while I play tracks from the other albums I shared.
Try it again in a few months if you're in the mood! If it doesn't click 🤷.

@@tonyloafpoundstone man, on youtube i rarely see mentions of GBV and never see anyone reference OTC. their two albums are in my top ten of all time and they're probably my favorite artist besides Bob Dylan. you have great taste. Diamond Jubilee is one of the best albums this side of the century IMO
