There's an in-universe reason why Sonic makes movie and actor references. Like you stated, he was bored and lonely without someone to bounce off of. In the first movie, he's seen many movies and read many comics in his current life on Earth, thrown in without Longclaw to guide him, her last lines to him were to never stop running and stay away from others lest they use his power for nefarious schemes. This little guy has only known to speak with references through media in solidarity.
I agree. I like when it's done in a way to emphasize that aspect of his character, but I don't like it when it's done just to be lazy pop culture shorthand for the audience (Winter Solider reference doesn't feel like Sonic trying to make a similar connection, more for a *This is popular* nod.)
God just imagine if that wedding scene was either removed or cutdown and in place of it's length we got to see the tails and knuckles journey to earth through the different game worlds in the movie and not just in a comic

16:53 the funniest thing about the ghost busters reference is that if you pay attention to the placement of the buildings in green hills you'll notice there was no way in hell he could've seen the death egg robot lol
I feel like I'm one of the few who is fine with the wedding scene being here. I like the sister-in-law character and it's nice they still try to work in the cast they established in the first movie, and it's better done here than in knuckles. She's no agent stone, but who could be?
You certainly aren't the only one. I have invited friends to see Sonic 3 with me and they had to catch up on 2. They loved the wedding. So did my friend who I took to the cinema originally, as did the other mums in the cinema. This was a calculated addition to the movie to make the movie appeal to more audiences. Is it perfectly inserted and integrated? No. Is it the worst part of the movie? Definitely up to who's watching.
Something I found that was a missed opportunity in Sonic 2 was definitely the wedding scene. It could have been replaced by Tails getting the plane. I doubt anyone cared to see Randall and Rachel's relationship.
Someone already explained the constant references Sonic makes, so I'll explain the Ghostbusters one. The Ghostbusters StayPuft Marshmallow Man is referenced a couple of times due to the Master Emerald being explained as being able to turn thoughts into reality. The Staypuft Marshmallow Man came about in Ghostbusters because Ray tried to think of the most harmless thing while the other 3 tried to keep their minds blank when forced to choose the form of the destructor, and the Marshmallow Man was chosen and made real from Ray's thoughts, just like what the Master Emerald is said to be able to do. This extra layer is why they didn't go for a simple megazord reference or something else.
All scenes that are of no direct consequence to the primary plot are offensive by means of being useless to the film. The wedding scenes only became relevant when the B "plot," plot being used very loosely there, finally converged with the A plot.
14:11 I'd argue Knuckles isn't 'simple minded and primitive', but rather is socially inept, going through culture shock and tribal in his behaviour. Ngl your words make it sound like he's inferior just cus he's not used to the environment of a whole different area....
The perfect scene in my opinion was the opening scene because I love the Scavengers and the way Robotnik met Knuckles on the mushroom planet. They actually did plan on including Angel Island after that, but scrapped it for some sort of timing reasons, as what I heard on the GHZ podcast interview. It's such a real shame they didn't choose that path because it would make the movie 100 times better
The reference to stay puft is because Wade made the comparison to the plot point in Ghostbusters of "choosing the form of the destroyer" to "The emerald can turn your thoughts into great and terrible power". Maybe afterward they could've added a line about it but they already had that reference made and it sorta demonstrates the level of threat the death egg robot imposes on our heroes.
Yeah, this is why I actually went to see this one in theaters proper. It was properly embracing the material in a way I didn't think I wanted to just pass off until it got a home release. Hell, I had my doubts at Idris Elba as Knuckles as I expected him to being another starry name just sleepwalking an easy check. Glad my doubts were put to rest as he quickly blended in, comedy and drama and all. And imagine my surprise getting Colleen to actually reprise her role this time. I think it was a combination of various circumstances that allowed her to come back for both budget and time reasons, but I am still very happy to see such a rare thing come to happen in a big cinematic adaptation of something mostly driven by a voice cast (Memories of a completely recast Ninjago film that didn't quite feel right....)
Indeed. I really feel the Sonic films need to embrace that more. Say whatever you will about "The Super Mario Bros Movie" and it's pop culture needle drops, but there was a fair and healthy dose of score that was dedicated to putting in allusions to various pieces of Mario music, and the film would have been more generic without it. As Sonic stands, it's doing solid on references and character, but less so on really feeling like the game with that touch.
when i watched Sonic 2 the first time - the film froze at the wedding scene and we were told to come back the next day so i had to endure it twice. Sonic 2 is a lot more enjoyable than the first one, like the games i tell people to skip Sonic 1 and go straight to the sequel.
Similar thing happen to me when i went to see the movie, after the scene sonic and tails went to sleep, the theater screen just went black for a short period of time but they were able to fix it and we were able to see the rest of the movie with no other issues.
Sonic Movie 2 is where it's at,it ups everything(but the music)to the ante, introduces Tails and Knuckles, and had given them the spotlight they've needed for the longest time. The action is stellar, although I do feel we needed more locations for Sonic & Tails to go to so it would feel more like an adventure, the snowboarding and Labyrinth scenes are more of what I want and I hope Movie 4 feels like a full on A to B adventure like many of the games as I'm not really getting much of that from Movie 3. One more thing,I honestly think they added Shadow to the movieverse way too early, any other character they add in the future won't live up to the second most popular character in the whole canon.I feel they have to add some incredibly deep cut characters like Hasbean from Doctor Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine to capture that hype factor, they could have him be a creation of Agent Stone through some testing with new coffee ideas, maybe some weird magical mcguffin like I dunno the Phantom Ruby falls from the sky and he uses to create the perfecf coffee and ends up creating Hasbean.
1:58 Why is Tom Holland in everyone's fan casts? People thought he would play Ash in a live-action Pokemon movie and everyone thought he would play Ben 10 and Tails and other characters but he's not. I do have faith for his future acting career since he's not only going to be in Spider-Man 4 but he's going to be in the next Christopher Nolan movie.
@@jskywalker58 Easy. 60% of the people who see that poster and name are likely gonna see it because of it. All around the world too, and it sucks sometimes because a person's talents can really be devolved when you simply think of it in those terms. A "name" rather than a "talent".

If you get rid of the cringey Bruno Mars dance scene and the cringey wedding scene, Sonic Movie 2 becomes a slightly less mediocre movie. That said, I like how Sonic Movie 2 seemed to test the waters for the public reaction to a 2-hour-long Sonic movie and I'm disappointed that Sonic Movie 3 isn't also 2 hours long (or longer). Also, in a recent interview Fowler said he didn't include Black Doom in Sonic Movie 3 because he wants his Sonic movies to be 'grounded' in the real world. In my opinion, the biggest flaw of the Paramount Sonic movies is that they are 'grounded' in the real world. Trying to make a franchise about an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog that can run faster than the speed of sound 'grounded' in the real world is dishonest.
That’s your opinion. Only problem was some of the humor and the wedding scene. It’s a great movie to the vast majority. Nowhere near mediocre, unlike Mario
@@ZERO10989I think it's really selfish of him and Channel Pup to want the Sonic movies to be what they want them to be, rather than what Jeff Fowler and the other people responsible for these movies want them to be. As a semi counter to the drip feed of Sonic characters, one could say it's for general audiences to digest easier, but I'd say these characters benefit greatly from being soft rebooted/reimagined in a new context/world divorced from the games and that isn't preestablished. That way we can see stuff like Team Sonic form without anything in the lore of the games sort of preventing it from making sense (like Knuckles watching over the Master Emerald for example), or seeing Sonic and Shadow meet for the first time.

It doesn’t make a big difference. But getting a good knuckles voice is nice. Acknowledging knuckles is basically black is icing on the cake for me. Seriously outside maybe boom knuckles voices have kinda sucked prior to Idris
In my opinion, which sonic movie is better is dependent on whether you value individual epic moments, or an overall cohesive whole. There are scenes and sequences in Sonic 2 that, for me, far surpass anything sonic 1 has to offer. However, sonic 1 is a far better movie in terms of overall construction.
3:25 I disagree. I actually think he and his culture are more South-American-coded, if anything. They've got an incredibly similar style of clothing, and in sa1, when you visit the past, you're surrounded by stepped pyramids, which are found in South America. Is this a hot take? I just really don't think dreadlocks are enough to call him "black-coded."
Walla walla is real and a bunch of stuff and places around here are named after tribes. Walla walla, Yakima, kittitas, etc. pick a city or county in Washington state and you have a 50 50 chance of that being the nominal heritage
A lot of the unusual names are kept surprisingly because colonizers didn't really have any replacement names for him. 😊 Probably not the best thing to make fun of with your accent I'm just saying

You want to get rid of the human characters, but what if people like them? What if people like Sonic and his friends living on Earth?
Um, what? I don't see how ChannelPup is being selfish. He's just sharing his opinion on Sonic Movie 2 like the rest of us do. Also, it's not that he doesn't want humans to exist in the films, I think it's because they need to serve the story well and not take up so much screen time that it feels less like a Sonic movie.
@EpicPixel2024 Look, I don't want to get into arguments with people online, but the Sonic movies mean a lot to me and I really like them. So when someone complains about the aspects that I like about them, that make them different from the games, I get defensive. I'm not going to say that the movies are perfect, because there are things that I don't like, like the wedding scene and the Knuckles series not exploring more of Knuckles' past. But I also don't think that the movies have to be exactly like the games or that they should cancel this universe and create another one, but an animated one.
@@igorleban2742 I understand. In fact, as a Sonic fan myself, I can sometimes get defensive when something I’m passionate about is criticised. But don’t worry, because just like you I also like the movies and agree that they’re not perfect.
1. I'm just saying my own thoughts. I speak only for myself. 2. I didn't say they should get rid of the humans. 3. Would all feedback good and bad technically be selfish by that logic?
@@ChannelPup Personally, I like Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles living on Earth and interacting with humans. I like Tom and Maddie, I think they are great characters. I want to see them interact with other characters from the games like Amy, Big, Cream, the Chaotix, and other anthropomorphic animal characters, but I don't think they need to abandon Earth or get rid of characters like Tom, Maddie, and Agent Stone.
a lot of the "odder" names in the united states of america, like the ones you mentioned, are actually based on native american words! in fact, a shocking number of states and towns are named after native american words. but be careful; there have been cases where people claim their state or town is named after a native american word but completely made it up! idaho is one such case. :) idaho is a complete nonsense word.
30:52 to 32:35 Personally having watched both Sonic and Mario's Movies and I'm saying this without bias.. I liked the Sonic Movies more: Even if I wasn't a Sonic fan I would still say that as a General Movie Experience the Sonic movies are great, whereas I feel the Mario Movie is more for Mario fans, I'm not a Mario guy so the Easter Eggs and references for the most part were lost on me and after a while that's all the Movie felt like, it doesn't put a spin on Mario or that world or have something interesting to say its just A+B=C nothing about that Movie even now really stood/stands out about it other then animation which.. Eh, With Sonic my focus was on the Characters and the story being told; not how many Easter Eggs I could spot or hear in one scene which I'll openly admit after a while really put me out of it.
Honestly liked the Mario movie a hell of a lot more, where the sonic movies are made for general audiences, Mario is for the fans which is how a video game movie should be and the box office proved that
The whole thing was sonic the hedgehog two that makes it so different from the first movie. Is that sonic the hedgehog one was more like a love letter to the sonic fans who want to see this character in live action sonic the hedgehog two it’s kind if not necessarily kiddy but targeted for a wider range of audiences

7:33 hear me out. What if that pink haired woman is the same one from tails tube.
17:01 This reminds me of TMNT Mutant Mayhem with all of the pop culture references. 17:05 and why did Sonic say that? Knuckles is nothing like Bucky.
I absolutely hate the wedding scene
3:25 I disagree. I actually think he and his culture are more South-American-coded, if anything. They've got an incredibly similar style of clothing, and in sa1, when you visit the past, you're surrounded by stepped pyramids, which are found in South America. Is this a hot take? I just really don't think dreadlocks are enough to call him "black-coded."
Sonic 2 was good my problem is talking about the sonic films
Nah Iowa got me 😂
4:50 Iowa was named after a native American Trudeau that was there
So it's a different language! Makes sense. I wonder where the name comes from.
The human characters really just make the movies worse aside from Robotnik and Agent Stone
Yep, Walla Walla in Washington state.
It’s a real place.
You did what?!?!? 24:52
22:35 💀💀💀💀💀
I hated the wedding scene so much. Tails is hurt and your focusing on this karen who no one gives a shit about
I actually cringed seeing Fred. That guy has not uploaded in like 10 years. Yes. You are old if you remember Fred.
Bets game movie sonic the hedgehog 2 movie 2022🎉🎉🎉 I love This movie❤ 10/10
Walla walla is real and a bunch of stuff and places around here are named after tribes. Walla walla, Yakima, kittitas, etc. pick a city or county in Washington state and you have a 50 50 chance of that being the nominal heritage
A lot of the unusual names are kept surprisingly because colonizers didn't really have any replacement names for him.
😊 Probably not the best thing to make fun of with your accent I'm just saying
I think it's pretty selfish that you want the Sonic movies to be what you want them to be, instead of what Jeff Fowler and the other people responsible for these movies want them to be.
THere were zero game in between SOnic 1 and 2. Zero, not a single game
Almost Perfect? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Rachael is not funny lol. & she needs to be stopped immediately
-_-
humor is subjective
@ she’s a great character though 🤥
@@Anonymous.Throne i never said anything about her character? i just said humor was subjective
@@Yeetymcspeedy and I said she’s a great character
@@Anonymous.Throne you said that obviously implying that you’re lying
WHY ARE YOU SAYING THE F WORD?!
And why AREN'T you talking about Wade confronting Stone?
Because he hates the human characters
@@igorleban2742 wow
DARN IT! IM THIRD!
a lot of the "odder" names in the united states of america, like the ones you mentioned, are actually based on native american words! in fact, a shocking number of states and towns are named after native american words. but be careful; there have been cases where people claim their state or town is named after a native american word but completely made it up! idaho is one such case. :) idaho is a complete nonsense word.
Well I'll be damned! It was a different language then.

Personally having watched both Sonic and Mario's Movies and I'm saying this without bias.. I liked the Sonic Movies more:
Even if I wasn't a Sonic fan I would still say that as a General Movie Experience the Sonic movies are great,
whereas I feel the Mario Movie is more for Mario fans, I'm not a Mario guy so the Easter Eggs and references for the most part were lost on me and after a while that's all the Movie felt like, it doesn't put a spin on Mario or that world or have something interesting to say its just A+B=C nothing about that Movie even now really stood/stands out about it other then animation which.. Eh, With Sonic my focus was on the Characters and the story being told; not how many Easter Eggs I could spot or hear in one scene which I'll openly admit after a while really put me out of it.
The sonic movie 2nd is was best and you be a hater
It's not even CLOSE to being the best. Raise your standards. lol
If I get the pre-quill comics, I'm reading them in the characters' voices.
