  • I picked up the lumber a few days a go. I knew that I had a limited amount of time be fore snow flies so I got to work. I laid the house out insuring that I would not waist any more lumber than I had to. So far it's worked out beautifully! Nest week, floor joists and second story...

    Hi there Heath! We just framed one of our walls today. My wife Kelly watched you raise the all your walls and the entire build.
    So being a little stumped today, she said I needed to come over and watch your framing/siding and wall raising. I tried to raise the walls -- without the plywood siding and it just "farged" up the whole thing, and had to redo, and re-nail a number of beams as it was all cattywampus. We're following your steps today to hopefully and have at least one wall raised.

    Well done. I know you don't need some 'stranger' out here on the 'web' to validate your decisions but, WELL done on the choice of 6's on 16's on the exterior. Nicely done for "not a framer". I worked construction for years and saw very few "flaws". You've done, what looks to be, a better job than many framers I've followed up. Red-heads are the better way to go anyway, in my opinion.

    Hello from Brazil.
    I found your channel a few days ago and since then, I have been watching almost all your videos, following the order of old posting. This video is around 154 and I see there are more than that to watch yet, but I will catch it up.
    I have wondering why you still didn't start to plant vegetables and do your orchard.
    I also have a farm here Goias State (in the central part of the country), which I bought a few years ago, but for now I have been renting it out and later when I can afford to improve it I will to take it over and do my projects.
    Good luck in your projects.

    Great job in Ireland we have a mental block to timber framing without exterior concrete block work. Planning to do timber framing myself so you vblog is great. At the bottom 2' instead of OSB would it be better to use marine plywood. Like the idea to do the workshop first as a learning experience.

    A great video. You covered the construction method well, without a lot of redundant detail. And answered my only question as I watched; why you did not use a foam gasket? On the next video you might go into detail on angle calculation with the speed and framing square's; as this can be hard for new DIY's to understand. I like the high windows as wall space above benches under the windows is very handy. Bert

    only thing i saw that i learned and did when framing here in the deep south was you didn't make a corner (3 or 4 12" blocks nailed on the inside of end stud and a stud nailed to them, makes a solid area to nail the end studs of short walls and an inside corner for your drywall) on the two ends of your long walls.(may have been camera angle)

    • @RedPoppyRanch

      sill seal doesn't last. Even liquid nails gets brittle. Polyurethane caulking will last much, much longer.

  • @ccgsales

    When you raised the walls, aren't you supposed to put down a foam membrane strip so the wood is not directly touching the concrete slab, to prevent moisture seeping into the sill plate and also for insulation?

      I would have expected the sill seal as well, just to keep the wood from contacting the concrete that is always going to be a little damp. The sill seal would help prevent the moisture from wicking into the wood as well.

    Awesome framing job! I've framed hundreds of houses and I would definitely hire you. I would prefer to use sill seal in addition to the caulk, but not necessary since you are planning to use good quality caulk (inside and out I hope). One thing to consider is to put at least 2"x2" (3"x3" preferred) plate washers on each anchor bolt. If you have a list of Simpson hardware that you need for the project, let me know what you need. I've got thousands of hangers, roofing clips, straps, etc. that I would gladly donate to your project.

  • @swaterman08

    That is a good size house with 0 or maybe 1 kid. Did they not plan to live here full time at first?
    Foundation walls and gaskets is important as well. Caulking is great for maybe 10 years. after that forget about it.
    If he was in a dry warm place, sure... This place get rain and snow.
    Forget about worrying about your basement flooding.... the house will. I would not build one without a basement, or even a crawl space and then spray foam everything.

    Framing with a nail gun - it sure is rewarding, moves along quickly. Nice walls - love the time lapse on that.
    But I couldn't help but notice lack of fireblocking between the studs. Perhaps things have changed, but I thought that was required since the 60s. Not complaining, just was curious.

    • @RedPoppyRanch
      @RedPoppyRanch  7 років тому +1

      I think fire blocking starts at 8'. The top plate takes care of it.

    • @RelentlessHomesteading
      @RelentlessHomesteading 7 років тому

      Thanks -- Interesting. Just looked at the code and it saw it says 10'. Perhaps the blocking I've seen was always more about securing the sheetrock at 4' between studs than about the fire code.
