So, you get a Volca Modular, next a Deopfer Mini Case with some nice toys inside, then a Behringer Neutron, maybe a Korg SQ-1. Yeah, it all starts innocently enough.... but there's NO END TO IT!
And soon you realize. You arent a synth collector. Not at all. Its a cable collection / management black hole that doesnt end. There is a cable missing. Always. Anytime. They dont disappear but they do. Schroedingers cables. Oh yeah and i guess there are some synths hidden under those cables somewhere idk.
Looks like a $200 price point. This thing is going to fly off the shelves. I think for a lot of people like myself that want to get into modular but are intimidated by the price and learning curve this kinda solves both issues.
In my case, I don't have any interest in diving into the modular world...my GAS is bad enough already, but having just one little, inexpensive, versatile semi modular box? That sounds like thousands of hours of fun and creativity. This seems like endless fun with sonic exploration and a sort of quasi-meditative feel.
As a real life Music Easel owner and musician, I approve this Volca. Korg has taken some of the real deal's pain points away and left you with an easel that meets the original's aspirations to be small, expressive, portable + battery powered, and organic.
I like the idea of having a synthesizer wherever you go. When quarantine started, I didn’t want to bring my music stuff to my parents house because it would be a lot to carry, but then my mom talked me into it and ended up bringing it anyway. The Volcas fit in the palm of your hand. So I could bring all of them and still be able to have lots of space in my room. I need to get more Volcas.
Best sound demo for the Volca Modular I've heard so far, this sounds like it was meant to sound in this demo, it's capable of some very squealy type metallic FM sounds which can be good in some instances. I guess the west coast path was the most original if a little restricted in producing more mainstream subtractive synth sounds, but if that's what you want there are the other Volcas and loads of other synths available.
Be careful though, from what I heard, volatges in softpop and bitranger are 0 to 5v while VM is -3.3 to +3.3v, so you might damage your gear going from a patchway to the other. More details here : forum.aemodular.com/thread/151/korg-volca-modular
@ I think what I said has to do with the patchbay, not the cv in/cv out sockets. You can not LOPAG Bitranger with VM for example, or you'd have to offset the signal. Everything is explained in some of the posts of the AEM forum (link above) better than I can understand. AEM and the Bastl patchwire semi modular have the same voltage system so I guess everything said for AEM should work for Kastle, Bitranger and Softpop.

(and also folktek mescaline at some point)
For everyone whining about its practicality as an actual performance/recording instrument, I think you've missed the point of the entire volca line. They're low cost, compact, simple machines meant to be accessible to a wide audience. For someone who has no experience with modular synthesis this is a relatively cheap and easy intro device.
I dunno, give me a keystep pro, a sample for drums, bass, and an fm or two and I could definitely write a full set of songs. Really the weakest point of the volcas in terms of performance is the sequencer. Get an external piece and you're set. Though this volca definitely seems like kinda a fun little portable thing for on the go sonic exploration more than oriented around traditional performance
Korg needs to update the 3 original Volcas to include "Global System Parameter" #8 which is for the "Sync input/output unit". This would allow the entire collection of Volcas to sync to “Once a step” (or 4 PPQN). The added bonus is that when the Volca Drum, Volca Kick, or Volca Sample is used as the master clock, the swing settings will extend to all Volcas in the chain.

I wanna see their version of a sort of ADDAC’s open heart surgery module, with a little breadboard nested in the middle of a ‘Volca Lunetta’, and a few DIP sockets with these DuPont breakouts. It will work if you can share a common ground and they have a similar voltage range. Whenever you connect to electronic circuits together you need to have a common ground between them, that in part is what the shield of a guitar cable does. If you connect both devices to the same mixer that ought to do it
Kudos on functionality and all that west coasty stuff, that’s for sure. But why does it sound, ehm.. odd? Did you record it’s built-in dynamic into Behringer’s mixer with built-in reverb? Muddy sound all the way. Guess, that’s the price for being small and cheap but still.. could it sound better?
It has a 1/8" patch jack for bringing in CV. In order to make other connections, you would have to build a patch bay for it, or make custom conversion cables.
Is it actually analogue? If it is, some amazing mods could come out of this! At very least you could probably put it in a big case with some banana jacks :D
From the Reverb site: ¨Instead of aspiring to musical efficiency by appealing to established tradition, the West Coast approach evolved out of a desire to replicate acoustically-generated tones by way of manipulating recorded sounds. In following this trajectory, it effectively rejected an established tradition and founded a new one. This against-the-grain philosophy pervades the West Coast workflow. Rather than a voltage-controlled filter, one way to vary the harmonic interest in West Coast patches is by using a waveshaper (though it should be noted that this is only one type of synthesis inherent to the West Coast style). Where a VCF removes harmonic content from a signal, a waveshaper maps the input and the output of the waveform and applies either a fixed or variable mathematical function (commonly known as the “shaping function”) that alters the shape of the waveform, resulting in a more abrasive sound than that typical of its East Coast parallel.¨
