I've never heard that quote before? I was very much an idealist with a fixed code of conduct. I was a practitioner of stoicism in that I accepted responsibilities far beyond my age in a serious manner that was probably too heavy for someone my age. I took on the entire financial burden from my family, for my needs, from 13 onward. I accepted responsibility for anything that went remotely wrong even when I was only peripherally involved. As an adult I made far too many compromises with my ideals, my code & responsibilities. I had to break my code of conduct to strike out on my own because my mother kept making excuses as to why I was needed at home. I soon found that I had to break the ideals/ethics I had developed growing up in dealing with the young lady I married not long after high school. I did not become the adult I had the potential to become & part of that was the way I behaved in my younger years. Much of the work I did to make ends meet then was composed of hard labor over far longer hours than were even legal in my state. I suffered permanent damage to my back, both ankles, both hips, one shoulder & one knee. I kept away from pain killers even if it meant I couldn't function properly. I wound up a househusband, virtually abandoning the skills I had developed during my school years, which I became the best at which I could possibly be. I found methods of avoiding heavy stress on my back & joints while still getting the job done. Nonetheless I always felt like less of a man for the unproductive existence I had in our small family. Thinking back I see where I went wrong in so many places. I am happy now but I feel that had I not given in, breaking my code of conduct, abandoning many of my ideals, given up on the stoicism that served me well in my younger years & accepted self responsibility by finding a way to make a comfortable living without heavy labor - I think I would be far happier still. I cannot imagine what my life would be like or where I would be though. It's too far removed from my current existence to see what it might have become.
