LEGO has begun rereleasing popular LEGO sets in new colors. Same set. Different colors. Is this a quick cash grab or simply a way of performing market research? Is it good to have more color options when buying sets? Let’s explore the reasons why LEGO is implementing this new strategy of recoloring sets. LEGO has been releasing recolored sets for a few years now and many have gone under the radar! It’s surprising how many people haven’t noticed… but I have. Watch the entire video to see all the recolored LEGO sets and minifigures!

LEGO has been experimenting with releasing sets in multiple colors. What do you think of this strategy? This was really interesting to research. I hope you enjoy the video!
I think Lego just are experimenting and what people like and letting people choose their variance 👍😊
Ok
i think its pretty beta
Can you start making more lego ninjago videos
I have both parrots, they look really nice on display together.
"LEGO is releasing the same set in multiple colors!"
_Bionicle_ fans: _[nervous shifty eyes]_
most of the villain sets were just the same thing in 6 colors
Bionicle mentioned!
i luv bonkle
Toys R Us yellow jetrax moment
@@phyog4662 I was genuinely expecting a mention of Yellow Jetrax.
tbh i dont mind the multiple color options, AS LONG that they dont increase the price for no reason
Yeah I appreciate the freedom of choice, probably just sucks for the collectors. As long as the price for them both stays the same at release I don't see a reason to complain.
@@dzintars8034 lmao good point, it'd be incredibly based if they did this to every single set ever so that "investment" collectors have to take a gamble on what colourway appreciates in value 😂
I bought both parrots so they can marry and kiss
I bought two blue parrots so they can marry and kiss
Ewww! They’ll get cooties!!!
@@samuelwilkin5Gay lego parrots was not somthing I thought I needed
I bought both so they can f and have kids
Beautiful
The pink parrot isn't a straight color swap, the color patterns are different too.
Edit:I have both and I built a double perch for them to stand on side-by-side.
I think the parrot was realised in pink so it could be a couples set, it was quite a popular date trend on TikTok for couples where they'd build one bird each and it would represent them. I bought them for me and my boyfriend because of it.
LEGO: retires a set.
Fans: “No! I wanted that set!”
LEGO: doesn’t retire set.
Fans: “No! Thats lazy!”
You mistyped
LEGO: "Makes a lazy recolour"
I noticed you didn't mention Bionicle. They released 12 color variants of the Bohrok. Maybe they're not exact recolors, because the claw pieces were different on all of them, but definitely worth noting.
Recolors are fine. They just need to work on improving the price so that people would actually consider buying multiple. With traditional model kits, the plastic is usually just white or gray, with the expectation that it will be painted to look as desired. Painting Lego is sacrilege, so we're either stuck with the available colors, or we have to source parts in the right color from other kits.
Yes, and the bohrok did have a thing where the krana were all recolored/some rarer ones which I think worked really well with the price
the time before bionicle was during a time when Lego was on the brink of failure. They really needed something like bionicle. but yes, bionicle was a very big implicit in releasing a bunch of the same sets in slightly different models and colors. But we loved it and it was great. I still have mine.
Same could be said for toa metru, hordika and vahki. The real exact recolor is the yellow Jetrax T-6, identical build, just different color
That was the whole point of bionicle my guy. You'd have six heros and six bad guys. There was lore and names and powers for every single one. The only time they did a straight recolor was the Jetrax T-6 as far as I can remember.
I'll say it again: The Bohrok, Bohrok Kal, Rahkshi, Toa Metru, Toa Hordika, Toa Inika, The Piraka, Visorak, Rahaga, Mata nui, Mahri nui and Metru nui matoran and Turaga are more or less clone sets.
LEGO fans: why are they releasing the exact same set, sometimes in new colors and with minor tweaks?
Transformers fans: welcome to the club.
What about classic Mortal Kombat? The ultimate color swapping series
Ironically Lego and hasbro are collaborating
@@Fire_2000 I was moreso thinking about toylines. Transformers has literally been doing recolors, retools, and reissues since day one.
@@gandalflotr2898 hopefully they do the Decepticon Seekers so this joke can go full circle. It's a fictional setting so the fact that they're military jets shouldn't matter, especially if they're so deformed you can't even tell what kind of jets they are.
Heck, Prime and Bee even have plenty of recolor potential on their own.
@@DJDroz-gh5nt true they release Lego bumblebee I hoping for cliffjumper
I think it's a pretty cool idea for 3-in-1 sets in particular, since you can build multiple different sets from those parts.
So you could have the pink parrot, and want to also have frog on display, if you want you can have a blue one. And you technically bought a different set.
Don't think I'll be having it, but I think it's smart.
Yeah, and also it probably didn't take much recourses away from new stuff and you don't need to buy it
YESS. Lego Technic is too hyperfixated on racecars. I hate it sm. I wish we got more construction machine models. All the non-racecar models are wayy too basic and small
Agreed
It’s too bad that helicopter set was never released, when I first heard I was considering buying it.
Bionicle
YES! I want some crane stuff that isn’t in a 3 bajillion dollar set for bionicle Mocs!
I agree those damn iso builders
I think it’s cool that some sets have a copy that’s a different color. Works best with the car sets, because the same model can be made differently.
Personally I'm glad they put out the pink parrot because my best friend's favorite color is pink so I bought both so we could build together. It was a really nice experience and we both had a lot of fun!
Sometimes you wanted the set, but it was in the wrong color, so you decided against the purchase. LEGO is just trying to reach those missed sales. They are a business.
Exactly.
Honestly the only reason I haven't gotten the new Icons Countach is because I'm really hoping it gets similar treatment and we see a black with gold rims combo released like the Fiat 500 getting both the pastel yellow and blue options, because I prefer the black and gold colour combination more than I do the white and silver.
I remember the first set I have seen being Recolored is the Semi Truck. There was once the Yellow Colored one with "Lego" stickers on it, while the Toy Store "ToysRus" got a Blue one with "ToysRus" stickers on it.
The first time I can think of that Lego did recolors of sets was the My Own Train line. Specifically the locomotives, which came in black, blue, green, old brown, and old dark grey.
Also, although it was a very odd release, the My Own Train passenger wagon did have a second color released as part of set 4534 Express. In said set, we got a blue passenger wagon, which differed in color from the original passenger wagon in green.
Cool, huh?
Rereleases and recolors aren't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes retiring an old set makes it hard for people to get ahold of, so rereleasing it is great. Recolors are only bad if they're a naked attempt at tricking people into buying a set twice. Having options isn't bad at all.
its not much of a cash grab if they originally retail for the same price.
It's cash grab when Lego keeps re-releasing essentially the same themed set. Like for many of the Starwars ships.
@@SuperbustrI’d guess that’s more Disney’s fault than Lego
I'm more surprised they don't do this more often, like having store exclusive versions, where places like Target or Walmart get their own variant.
Lego Superstore set, in Red, Blue, or ultra rare Big Lots Yellow
Bionicle kinda did this with their canister sets, such as the Bohrok, Rahkshi, Vahki, Toa Hordika etc. Although, they often came with different weapons and masks, but were still pretty much identical in builds and it was still the same idea of releasing multiple options for people. But one true recolour I remember was 8942 Jetrax T6 from 2008, which had a limited gold edition compared to the standard blue and silver.
I also remember X-pod from Creator back in 2004 where 4346 Robo Pod, which was originally released green, also had a black version, 4335 Black Robo Pod.
At one point in time you could order Lego sets and choose your preferred color for them. That was the "My own Train" series. Each locomotive would have a bag of standard parts, most of which were black, while all the colorful parts were in a separate bag. That made it easy for Lego to put the pre-made part bags together and send them out, depending on which color you ordered.
I don't know why they don't do that kind of stuff anymore. It would be easier than what they already have to do for the Pick-a-Brick service.
Lego Sets are already separated into numbered bags, so if a set has a specific bag that you would like to order on its own, why don't they just let you do that? That would be sooo great for train sets where you just want more of a specific train car. Sure, for some sets it would make little sense to let you order only one bag, but when it does make sense they should let you.
I had forgotten about "my own train" sets, thanks for the reminder! I never looked into it as a kid but that makes total sense. Early 2000s had a lot of ingenuity
I wish they had put out the creator dinosaur set in orange in the US. I already have 3 copies of it in green and would have loved to have a herd of Triceratops in different colors.
8:00 I'm pretty sure both of the original Resistance X-Wings were built exactly the same, the piece count is just different because they had different side builds, Poe's black X-Wing had the little maintenance cart while the other one had a moisture vaporator.
I think it's a mix
A little cash grab
A little market testing
A little collect-ability
And a little passion.
Because man I've seen a lot of "Ugh I wish this came in [color]." even for lego, and I know people that if a set comes in multiple colors, they want to buy and build them to have a full display.
Plus imagine if you had a lil fiat or something in one color and their set only came in another color, and then bam they release YOUR color. A lot of people would want it, build it and then probably photo graph it with their own car. [Or pet or object]
This was Genius
Your thumbnail is actually what we want. Give us the same peasant shirts in every color
@3:48 2017 and 7 years later are not words that go well together in my brain... I mean, I guess it has been that long, but it doesn't feel like it. :|
I was expecting to see the Jetrax T6 Bionicle recolor from 2008. Ironically, the wide release set was blue while the limited edition was yellow.
Releasing the same set in two colors at once was also done for a little while in the late '90s with the Cyber Slam sub-line of technic sets. The same set being released in green and purple variants such as the Bungee Chopper 2854 and 8202.
For casual fans a lot of the time sets become home decor - it makes sense to release in multiple colours so you can appeal to more people at minimal cost. A set would have to be pretty bad for them not to sell through an initial run so I don't think they're risking a loss on this if it's already small runs or easy point-of-sale purchases
For some context, the Jesko is actually not a test run for colors. The white version is what Koenigsegg first released with the renders of the Jesko Attack version. When the Jesko Absolut version was released, it was with the gray and orange, as well as that being the same color scheme for the production Jesko Absolut which broke the 0-400km-0 speed record. I would have been cool for Lego to make separate Attack and Absolut versions with the colors though, instead of just releasing them both exactly the same.
I'm surprised you didn't mention LEGO's "My Own Train" range.
Where you could order the same steam locomotive design, in the choice of either Black, Grey, Green, Brown or Blue as the body colour.
I'm surprised you didn't metion the Lego Fender Guitar or the Lego Ideas Treehouse with their unique colour variations within the sets.
This isn't exactly a remake but take Lego 60s Batcave 76052 and Lego Batwing vs Riddler 76120. Both helicopters are almost the exact same build.
Also the Lego Speed Racer theme reused Racer X car, the exact same build, in both 8159 and 8160
I think repaint/recolor in toy industry is common, even Hasbro's Transformers and Mattel's Hot Wheels have a lot of recolors, Bandai Tokusatsu toys have a lot of recolors too
Transformers fans: "First time?"
I think if Lego would re-release Bionicle the fans would go nuts. Yes you could call it a cashgrab but man would I be happy if they did.
Honestly when I heard lego is getting "lazy" I thought it was a bad thing until they mentioned cars and now I respect that
The same thing, but over much longer time, like a rerelease, is the Technic 42031 Cherry Picker from 2015 and it's copy 42088 from 2019. I was furious when I saw the new version on the shelves, thinking how Lego has become lazy 😂
The 2020 resistance x-wing isn’t the same build. If you look at the wings, they aren’t built the same as the previous ones.
It kind of reminds me of bionicle. Some waves would be drastically different like the mahri, while earlier ones would just be carbon copies in different colors like the hordika.
Back in 2008 Lego released a recolour of one the Bionicle vehicles, which was just a golden Jetrax T6.
I have both Poe Dameron's X-wing and the Resistance X-wing and can confirm: They are pretty much the exact same build. (My favourite is still the very first X-wing set Lego released, though, despite its comparative simplicity.)
SpitBrix, you're like the WatchMojo of LEGO UA-camrs
Is that a compliment... Or an insult?
An insult for sure.@@alostbaron781
I don't care if it's lazy, I love the nostalgia reprints bringing back old sets from before my time.
The Koenigsegg Jesko isn't the first time. There has also been BIONICLE Jetrax-T6, the blue and yellow version both launched in August 2008
Even before that. Lego release technic dragster in 2 colors around 2000
@@jonathanwerrell3897 Really? Feels like SpitBrix is starting to spit fake info for his videos
@shvansee216 yes, in 1997 lego release 2 simple dragster set. A yellow and a red. And in 1998 they did again with two 3-wheeler chopper. A purple and a green one.
As a Bionicle fan, I am having flashbacks to the Jetrax T6 which had a Target exclusive version that was recolored yellow and showed up for a grand total of one page in the story. Bionicle was filled with clone sets where the only difference was color, mask, and weapon pieces, and even then that one was egregious.
At least parrots are actual things that come in different colors, so I am cool with it. I am also cool with most Star Wars recolors because they often depict different character’s personal ships. In fact, I wish that we’d get the Slave 1 in Jango Fett colors more.
The big difference for me is the degree of how contrived the recolors are.
Its honestly cool to have. As long as theyre not getting a markup for colors, or clogging shelves too much.
I hope they do it with more minifig scale sets. Speed champions, or city vehicle sets.
Direct re-releases would also be cool, though i have my doubts of too many good ones with all the retired molds
6:01 "What color is your Bugatti"
Nah this is nitpicky as hell, being able to get them in different colours is really cool and doesn’t take up new part or print budget
See it the same way. I mean there are several moc where they only change the Colour.
Sure, an X-wing is an X-wing and there's nothing they can do about that. But side builds can help differenciate them.
I really don't mind. Especially for the parrot, the alternate coloration is so gorgeous that it's certainly worth having it as an option imo.
Honestly this is kinda similar with how figure toys will often reuse molds and produce recolors to maximize the profit out of a single mold.
Though at least here we do get parts that we could use in other LEGO sets
Ah, that explains a bit of confusion I had. I wasn't aware there were two parrot sets - when I saw one online I was confused in that I thought: "wait, wasn't that more pink?". Turns out there's actually two of them. How strange of them to do that.
I always through the updated Las Vegas Architecture skyline set was a brave decision by Lego.
There was the Dirt Crusher accessories and recolor. Then the Dunebuggy/Tractor recolor.
I would actually love if they recoloured the Bumblebee set to red to make Cliff Jumper
Well hey, at least we get more pieces in different colors for certain MOCs, I guess
They shouldn't be considered their own set with a unique set number though
Really good video! Please make a video of you showing off you whole Lego collection
I'll "re-color" popular Friends sets like the hotdog van with different more life like colors - I call it "defriending" or "unfriending" - I picked up that hotdog van for about $14 and added about $9 more in alternative colors to make it more Lego "City" like - bag the mini dolls and bring in some of the minifigures and you're golden....
I wish Lego would take this a step farther. I would love a big castle, then just different faction. So if you want Black Falcon, it comes with Yellow, the shields and figures. If you want the Lion Knights, red instead and you get the idea. I think it would be an easy way to give castle fans what they want.
Thanks for sharing! It’s been a longtime passion of mine to make boring videos, and you’re a massive inspiration ❤
From my experience watching RIO 2 i can confirm that those birds have a WIDE color variety so i dont blame them for doing a recolor
my guess would be they are playing on fomo from most hardcore collectors or scalpers, who will now have to buy two of everything in fear it will become scarce.
I think multiple colors are awesome so that fans choose, but the fairest way to release them is to have them both at the same time on shelves, however, for maximum profit, I understand why they wait some time between them.
I’m not opposed really at all. I’m a pretty casual builder and I’ve missed plenty of sets I’d probably pick up if they were still on the shelves. Rereleasing in a new color is a good middle ground to keep the original “special” while giving new fans a chance to build those sets.
There was one lego creator spaceship set which i had that included a 3 in 1 spaceship and truck with trailer, this year, they made a "new" lego spaceship with the same design but newer parts instead of old ones, and it also didnt include a truck and trailer.
I wish they would release more sets in different colours, like the Speed Champions vehicles. The white Lamborghini is great, Release it in Red, Yellow or Black and I'll buy another one (ideally Red so I can stick an Autobot sticker on the hood)
Imagine releasing six of them all at once... but instead of just a car or a parrot it could be like robots that hit eachother and they could each have different weapons.
I think it makes sense for like cars which come out in different colours IRL same thing for certain animal based sets, I think as long as they're released at the same time it's not really a big deal
You forgot the ship in the bottle! I thought it was so strange when they re-released it so close to the previous one.
I mean parrots frogs and fish all come in various colors including hot pink so I don’t see toooooo much issue personally, you just get the option of getting a different color which depending on if you have kids it could be a huge plus
Wish we had more recolours for things like city buildings!
But they can't do it with the clones
It's a very common practice for collectible items so while it can be questionable from a lego fan's perspective I feel that it's hardly surprising that they also adopt that strategy.
It's basically fan-service.
Red vs Yellow Metrostation??
I dont mind having color variants. I think it means having more colors for parts that didnt originally have multiple colors. I have both bugatti bolides and i think theyre fantastic. I like having the Azure blue parts, there the only technic parts i even have in that color.
Aint no way thumbnail has an Eddsworld reference
Omg I just realised that
I like it I’d buy a new parrot every year. I’d also buy a new shark and crab every year.
Forgot to mention the groot and venom groot sets, the latter is half the former with the other half being a recolor with some added details.
Oh I have that Fiat 500 in blue! No Idea it was a rare set. It's still in sealed box.
They don’t expect you to buy both parrots. You just have options now if you want a lego parrot
I can understand people not feeling it but I like the colour option strategy but I don't think they should count as separate set numbers I feel like it should be a choice/option online and you select which one you want.
Plus it gets more coloured parts in circulation.
Hey man, recent fan. Love your vids!
Id love to see an in-depth dive on stuff like Lego Island (specifically Pepper and his lore, heard he's in Fortnite now?) Or Johnny Thunder and his story/lore.
I loved how I'd see characters like Johnny across different things and seeing them pop up in games like Backlots. Never beat the game, but boy was the demo fun.
Good times.
Miss that Era.
Wish Lego sets had stories like that
It doesn't bother me when lego rereleases a set in a new color for one set.
What bothers me is when lego re-releases new versions of old sets, as it causes the genera to become stale. I am looking at Lego Starwars and many of the sets that have been essentially re-released in updated versions, like the Millenium Falcon, which I think is on it's 5th version.
I was given the 2nd version of the Millenium Falcon and every other iteration except for the 5000 piece version is essentially just the same thing.
Releasing sets in multiple colors is good because then fans can choose which color they want their set to be. However it only works for sets based off of things that have multiple colors.
Think about it, how do we sell you something and make you buy ttwice, change the colours of course!
I did a bit of a double-take when I saw the two parrots next to each other while buying lego the other day.
Remember that time when Lego released six near-identical sets that mostly just differed in color and it saved the company?
I think it would be cool if Lego allowed you to order any car set in a different color. Idk if their car sets make enough money for them to do that tho.
I was so glad to see 2 lego sets that I bought being featured here. I missed seeing them build as the original set since they have been canibalized and spread over lego creations.
Note: it was the blue parrot and green dinosaurs if anyone cares, the creator sets are very fun to build and learn new techniques.
To be fair to lego Buggatis are known for the blue and sometimes yellow colours along with black
I am not against color swaps, but it's gotta make sense. Cars are one of the best options in this respect. as it is, I buy multiple speed champion cars, then try to collect the parts in order to recolor it manually. EX: the recent Nascar Speed Champions Nascar camaro build is this hideous green purple yellow-orange color pallet. I want to complete one in Red white and blue among other possible colors to replicate actual drivers from Nascar. alternate color options would streamline this process further.
Do you think the new Lego Princess Peach castle fits the bill? The new one is quite different/smaller from the older version, but it's still Peach's castle. To be fair, there is a new character in the new Peach castle set. I don't know, but I found it interesting as well, that Lego would release another version.
I'm fine with recolors, but release or announce them at the same time, with general availability like the Jesko.
Shocked you didn’t mention the ucs falcon and Death Star here
i love yellow 6:11
I like recolored sets, as some times it allows you to get parts in a specific color.
I wouldn't necessarily call it a cash grab because I feel like for the most part people will only get one of the colors
Are you sick? I feel bad for you making a video even while your sick 😕
I have no problem with different colours but maybe released at the same time, although that does play into completionist hands, yeah looking at you vinyl record colours!
