Lore-wise, while elves and dwarves are... not friendly around the time of the Hobbit and LotR, Dwarves and Orcs/Goblins are hated blood enemies. The Mount Gundabad (the place where Durin the First, progenitor of Durin's Folk, had awoken, and thusly the most sacred place of the Dwarves) had been taken by the Orcs and turned into their militarized capital, despite several attempts to dislodge them. Khazad-dûm, also known as Moria, had been the jewel of the Dwarven race, but then it fell to Durin's Bane (a Balrog of Morgoth) and was populated by orcs/goblins. Thror (descendant of Durin) was murdered by Azog in Moria, and upon Thror's decapitated brow Azog carved his name into the flesh and bone. Suffice it to say, that forever burned Azog's name into Dwarven hearts, and kicked off what was called the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Placed against any foe, a Dwarf would turn his back to them to slay one of the hated and thrice-cursed Orcs. lotr.wikia.com/wiki/War_of_the_Dwarves_and_Orcs

depends on the humans you are referring to there Númenor had humans that could fight on par with elves and dwarfs, but most of them died when it sunk in Lord of the Rings lore there are a few survivors which includes many rangers among them.
"Holy hell, those javelins just shredded all of our arrows at once _AND_ punched holes in our lines!" "..." "Everyone, ignore the last three seconds and do the same thing again!"
It actualy was a logical thing to fire again since a balista like that should take a very long time to reload compared to a bow but dwarves appear to be extremly fast at reloading balistas.
what you forget is after the elf lines were blown back by unexpected anti arrow Ballista, the elves are momentarily in shock and need to regroup before firing again, so that gives the Ballistas some extra time. But still the reloading of the Ballistas here is impossibly fast :D
Dwarves have cartridges for their artillery and crossbows if you remember the goats pulling the chariot with the big crossbow attachment and a crank to fire repeatedly.
As soon as the Orcs appeared out of holes, the Dwarves yelled: - "My God! Look at that amount of EXP!" - "Great! I will finally be able to use that Lvl100 armour!" - "Forget about the armour! We'll be able to use thoseMithrill swords!"

meelee wins if it can get in meelee range. If the rangers stand in a clump they lose their switfness and the tactile advantage of being a ranger. If the elfs were smart they would spread out, like rangers on a cliff and the rest as decoy on the ground. If that was so the dwarfs can't parry from 2 angles at the same time. They parry the arrows from the ones from the ground, but then the ones coming from the cliffs can just keep firing and the dwarfs can't do shit. Noob elfs think too one- dimensional. The dwarfs are miles ahead of them in terms of actually planning strategy, counter attacking etc.

you can see the extreme discipline of the dwarves as they equip themselves with weapons that counter the ranged attack tactics of the elves and have a cavalry of armored goats capable of breaking through shield walls. not only that, when the orcs appeared, the dwarves were undeterred and immediately put up a wall of phalanx shields to effectively stop the surge, only to see the elves driven by their pride in being protected by dwarves causing them to rush the enemies outside the shield wall which would have stopped them successfully... even with this stupid move by the elves, the dwarves quickly changed the defense formation to an attack one to save the elves from being killed by an attack in orca claw. oh, and I forgot to mention the powerful contingent of tanks capable of laying waste to disorderly groups of soldiers along with a repeater crossbow capable of blasting away distracted units.

WTF
Elves are suicidal and dwarves are strategic
Elves be like:
*Suicide is badass*
If they would have emptied all their arrows first they would have one that fight but like helms deep they charged and lost
Right? The elves and dwarves now are best of buds once the orcs show up.
Shieldwalls are only effective if there's no other way. That was a hastily set up shield wall with open flanks. In my opinion, the sudden jump of the elves saved those dwarves
Whenever I see this scene I cant get over the fact of how the dwarves responded so quickly and in unison to the new threat while the elves just stood there looking at the oncoming charge. Then finally reacting! and jumping over a shield wall into a charging army just about to slam into said shield wall... DWARVES FOREVER!!!
The elves are an older race and can't adapt as well. The dwarves are just second to humans as the newest and most adaptable. Tolkien makes this a key point in his books and the movies do a good job to show that.

Placed against any foe, a Dwarf would turn his back to them to slay one of the hated and thrice-cursed Orcs.

meelee wins if it can get in meelee range.
