The reason why there were no chess grand masters from India till 1984 was not because it wasn't popular but because India was trying to survive the aftermath of the British colonization. People were busy making ends meet and didn't have any interest in a sport which at that time didn't produce any income. It's a different story now, it's much easier for the parents to support their child financially of they show interest in playing chess.
