If you were measuring using the counter on the automatic target sender/retriever than it's Yards as all of those measure in yards not feet.. ten feet is four steps away.. At that distance most shot, regardless of size, is just begining to separate from the wad cup..
It's OK we are all human. Glad you had a video on buckshot under 20 yards. Most of what I see is videos shooting from 15 yards to 50 yards. Most home defense distance I think is going to be less than 25 feet not yards. Great video answered my questions on home defense

Very well done comparison at home distances. #4 Rio is what I have loaded in my semi-auto shotgun for home defense. Really ideal pattern in my opinion. Thanks for posting this video.
I think any of these would give the bad guys a very bad day. Thank you for the video!! I personally go with 4 buck in my home defense shotgun, because of concern of over penetration.
#1 Buckshot is the best self defense load created for smooth bore weapons. 00Buck has more risk to bystanders, while #1Buck has optimal penetration and superior lack of OVER penetration in relation to wound channels over 00Buck. I personally would never recommend 00Buck if you live in a home where any risk of overpenetration is a concern, not just for your own family, but your neighbors as well.
Great video, thanks...I've just ordered some #4 and #1 buckshot shells for my new Mossberg 590 ...I've got some #00 so I'm going to do this same test as you. Thanks again
I use all three shot sizes for my home defense loads, however lately I've really been into #1 buck as my main load for home defense... which one of the 3 did you decide to use ?
Nice video here, good job. You have answered the questions about popular shells for home defense. Obviously, all of these will work just fine. Although it's harder to find, I prefer the #1 myself. On the boat in the islands, we always went with slug, 00, slug, 00, and on and on. So happy to never needing to use it, as always, better to have it than not. I don't like the shotgun for home defense too much because I like my home too much and don't want it to get destroyed while defending it. The 5.56 is the best home defense ammo because it won't over penetrate and will take care of body armor and drop anyone fast, with a close second choice the .45 auto suppressed, lot's of power and quiet so it won't blow out my hearing, all home defense guns should be suppressed if you can do it, that way they don't blind you with that first round. Blind and deaf after one round is a horrible way to fight in your own home or anywhere. You wouldn't drive your car without a muffler, so why use a gun without one?
Good points. A suppressor is definitely a game changer. IMHO 300 Blackout Sub Sonic out of a 8.5 inch barrel suppressed is another good option. Thanks for watching.
“Every pellet has a lawyer behind it” that’s a damn good saying. Thanks for the tests. This is what I was looking for. I think #4 is the way to go in my home. The army I think found that nickel plated #4 was the optimal and best home defense shell. I think your tests back that idea up pattern dispersion wise.
I finally got around to shooting my new Mossberg Retrograde 12-Gauge today and it ran like a well maintained Rolex...I'm very impressed with my new home defense weapon
Thanks for posting this, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Our local indoor range only allows slugs so I am not able to experiment with different types of buckshot which you have done for me with your video. I am going to keep training with the slugs, but I am going to get #1 buckshot for home defense.
This shows the same thing I've observed over the years and confirms that I would still stick with #1 buck for self defense. The 3-6 extra pellets over the 00 buck with a little bit of spread to do more damage. The Federal #1 "flite control" buck sabot loads were absolutely the perfect, ideal self defense load.
Great video Combining this information with what I've seen in gel, all of these would be effective. The paper shows the impact pattern. The gel shows how pellets deform and take slightly different paths sometimes criss crossing. Glad to see you using realistic distances.
Bought some very cheap un buffered 9 pellet 00 buck loads some time back. (Suprema) Even from full choke, it opened up fast. For home defense ranges that wasn't an issue. If it was outside defending livestock against predators, it might be. I always tended to like #4 buck patterns though. Have some #1 buck, but haven't tested. Thought that the #1 might be a better option than 00 because of a little better pellet count. Sometimes things are not necessarily as they appear though. Might not make any real difference in the final analysis in home defense. Larger birdshot like #4 has actually got a pretty good track record of shutting things down fast when ranges are measured in feet. A lot of home shotguns are loaded with pheasant loads and nothing more. Statistically shotguns only get fired once in a defensive shooting and I don't think the load was ever factored in to that data. Shotguns do get the job done more often than not.
First and foremost most thanks for watching. At close range pretty much any Shotgun load would have a perp rethinking their life decisions, even 7.5 Shot. Using birdshot also looks better from a legal standpoint if you ever had to use your Shotgun in a self defense scenario. #1Buck 16 pellet is my absolute favorite HD load. I wish it was more readily available.
Thanks for the information. I am currently researching #4 bck for indoor HD use and you gave me some good information in both your videos that I saw about it. !
I like how the #4 and the #1 were spreading even at 10 ft. At that close of a range you'll get full penetration with #4 and #1 buckshot plus the large pattern will destroy a larger area of tissue. As the distance from the target becomes greater 00 Buckshot performs better in penetration.
I have both 4Buck and 00Buck in my personal armory. But loaded up for home defense is #4 Buck in the boomer upstairs master bedroom. I like that 4Buck while it still goes through walls, it doesn’t go through as many walls like 00Buck does. The 4Buck for home defense is “good enough” indeed.

The next test should be layers of drywall penetration. (spaced 3.5" apart to simulate walls) I think Paul Harrell did this years ago and #4 Buck was the best for least overpenetration from bird to 00 Buck IFIRC. I tend to stay with #4 Buck for the house as it still patterns fine on a human torso size target. Even on those smaller than human, paper targets you show that as well.

@Mr. Shlock Slapping a trigger is not necessary and usually not a good idea unless you are shooting birds on the wing. Helps keep the muzzle in the right direction, especially when shooting still targets like he was doing.
Well-done comparison. The first salesperson where I buy ammo at suggested 7.5 birdshot and the second salesperson suggested 4 birdshot for home defense for distances of less than 10 yards and they argued with each other about it. To me, you might be flirting with under penetration and too wide of spread with either of those suggestions especially with 7.5. Judging from your comparison, the spread/patterning for #1 and #00 buckshot look just right, but then there is the concern of overpenetration. My conclusion...#4 buckshot may be the best option for distances less than 10 yards.
I don't understand why anyone would recommend birdshot for home defense. Birdshot has been proven over and over again to not be optimal. There is a video of a girl getting shot point blank with Birdshot and walking it off.
@@atumre4705 Yeah, I know. I was watching a video comparing 7.5 birdshot and 00 buckshot at, I think, 15 or 20 yards targeting a ballistic gel manikin wearing a t-shirt. The t-shirt acted almost like a Kevlar vest when shot with the birdshot. Still, I wouldn't want to get shot with birdshot at any distance!
That is a loaded question. It depends on several factors. Starting with where you live and who lives with you? #4 Buckshot is a good compromise. It is devastating inside 15 yards and the small 24inch pellets will go through less drywall than 00 Buck.
@@johnspruit7296 Just no...if you're going to use a 410, you might as well go with a rifle that is more effective and easier to use. For shotguns, anything smaller than 20 gauge is a no go.
Thank you for the video. I was wondering which to buy. I like the #1 buckshot, but any of those will get the job done. Imagine trying to recreate the results of those patterns with a handgun. You'd go broke and it would take forever. Why more people don't understand the shotgun is the best home defense weapon that exists is beyond me. Have you seen the Turkish made 12 gauge semi auto bullpups? I chose Black Aces Tactical FD-12 with a 20 round drum just for fun. Comes with two 5 round mags and 3 different chokes. I also ordered a 2 pack of 10 round mags for it. Talk about a force multiplier. OMG. I take possession of one soon after background check complete. I'll put a video running some buckshot and birdshot through it.
Thank for the response. The younger Draco crowd seems to dismiss the Shotgun as viable option. I hear good things about Blace Ace Bullpup. I don't know much about Turkish Shotguns. Congrats on new purchase.
@@atumre4705 I used to be all about the AR pistol until I realized I'm not that accurate when trying to be fast with one. I'm super fast at hitting targets with a shotgun though. The shotguns limitation was always total round count, but with a 20 round drum it's no longer a problem.

Thanks man for the video great job 00 buck all the way 1 isn't bad either
00 Buck is definitely a man stopper.
Thanks for the info
Nice I compared all in depth video today discussing Your longest possible shot in house or if in apartment etc check it out
Nice.
An intruder will have a hard enough time digesting that wad.
Facts.
Great video. Show the difference in buckshot
Thanks for watching.
What would u recommend for HD? never shot ever I weigh 140 if it makes a difference
That is a loaded question. It depends on several factors. Starting with where you live and who lives with you? #4 Buckshot is a good compromise. It is devastating inside 15 yards and the small 24inch pellets will go through less drywall than 00 Buck.
Don't underestimate a 410 ga with #4 Buck load.
@@johnspruit7296 Just no...if you're going to use a 410, you might as well go with a rifle that is more effective and easier to use. For shotguns, anything smaller than 20 gauge is a no go.
Good video. I’ve been doing the same thing lately.
Thanks. Yes testing your buckshot is essential
#1 buck is underrated in 12 gauge.
#1 Buckshot is my favorite.
Sweet
Thanks for watching.
#4 gets my vote
@@atumre4705 The Black Aces Tactical FD-12 is Turkish made as well.
@@atumre4705 I used to be all about the AR pistol until I realized I'm not that accurate when trying to be fast with one. I'm super fast at hitting targets with a shotgun though. The shotguns limitation was always total round count, but with a 20 round drum it's no longer a problem.
