When I was in high school I used practice this piece on an old piano my grandfather fixed for me. He'd listen to me practice and practice for hours every week. It felt so good when I was able to perform the whole piece to him. I'm writing a eulogy for him now, playing this cover because it's my favourite, and it just brings me to tears so easily.
Yes he touches me like few do.(not in a weird way of course) He is a master of dynamics. His arrangement and string work with David Sylvian was sublime best examples are on the "secrets of the beehive" album
He truly is. His work with the brilliant David Sylvian is among the best music ever made in my opinion. Only later on we will rediscover their greatness. Long after they've gone unfortunately.
And this is the only song of his that I can seem to find sheet music for. Other beautiful pieces like thousand knives or the last emperor are really hard to find so it's difficult to be able to learn them.
I’ve been doing some thinking recently about this channel and a thought popped into my mind overnight. It’s been a really interesting journey sharing my love of the piano with everyone all over the world. It still trips me out that I spend an afternoon recording a track (it has to be the afternoon for those curious about the process, as the piano is lit by natural light - it’s best between 1pm - 4pm in the room that I’m recording in), sitting by myself in front of a piano in my music school, and that people from all over the world get to experience a very private moment of my creative process. What I find particularly interesting though is when I listen back to these interpretations, there’s a pretty strong disconnect between playing/recording the tracks and hearing them back. Without a drop of ego, I personally enjoy listening to these tracks either late at night to help me fall asleep, occasionally in the morning when I wake up to find some more motivation about working on my Radiohead songbook, but my favourite time would definitely be when I’m travelling, especially in airports or on planes, and also on public transport. As there are a lot of returning subscribers and listeners on this channel, my question to you is this: Where and when do you listen to these tracks? What are you doing? Working? Studying? Travelling? Eating breakfast? Passing out? What time of day is it? What do you see? How does it make you feel? I’d be very curious to hear your thoughts, so hit me up. As always, thanks for supporting the channel and for incorporating this music into your lives. Man, the internet blows my mind sometimes x

This particular song has a immense presence in my life. I just randomly found it on youtube and somehow got me listening as many versions i could get my hands on. I'm the kind of guy who locks himself out every time i have a hard issue and need time to work on. This very song and Thousand Knives are my ultimate relief. When times were the hardest, and after hours and hours of overthinking these 2 songs were what hugged me in the dark and made me feel everything's will come just fine. So i have a very strong bond with them. The weird thing is, I've never knew they were from a movie! So after watching it, after feeling how Ryuichi wrote the song around the characters in the movie and their feelings... Man, that was a fucking shock. I truly discovered that what this song means to me is just impossible to describe.
ya know how dark the story rely is? Its about 2 people, one japanese and other american soldier, and the american dies and the japanese gets executed...
I like your version of this master piece. I think it has the proper pacing and dynamic. I remember watching Sakamoto playing solo at a concert and a few parts of it felt a bit slower than he composed for the movie.
Ryuichi Sakamoto composition/score is so moving, it really helped me learn more on the piano -a few years back, and Josh's interpretation is fabulous. Hats off to the composer and the pianist.. Beautiful sound.

The way you played this piece makes me want to go back into playing piano and learn it. You played it beautifully and I like listening to it when I'm not in a good head space.

I just recently lost my nana to cancer. She had a very old piano in her house that was crazily out of tune. We used to go and care for her towards the end of her life and I used to play this so much on her piano that it sounds weird in tune. I miss her dearly and this song is one of my closest connections to her even though I'm sure she has never even heard it. Thank you for this beautiful version

Oh, Josh! I have never heard a better rendition of this, apart from the Maestro's himself! Simply brilliant! Quick story: It's 1983; on the day I pass the bar exam, I simply can't believe that I AM a 22-year-old American lawyer. In "shock" I ride around Connecticut in my care, just wanting to be alone, in a daze. At a non-descript mall is a movie complex. What's this "Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence"? And in I go, alone. Of course I know David Bowie, but who is this Japanese POW camp commander, who wrote the MUSIC! I have adored Maestro Sakamoto ever since. Now living in Manila, and visiting Japan often, I would love to see him in concert, but you might know he has been ill (cancer.. all that smoking, of course), but seems to be on the mend. But in April of this year (2017), he released a studio album titled "async". And here's my take: I think "async" must be the most beautiful, original, unique, breathtakingly creative piece of music I have listened to in my 57 years on this planet (I mean of composers ALIVE during my 57 years). I urge anyone reading to listen to it. As a side-note, Maestro Sakamoto said in a recent interview that he "misses his great friend David Bowie" every day. How beautiful our world once was... and thank you, Josh, for going into the solitude of your music room and sharing with us... what remains of that Beauty.
Wow, this music is the reason I tracked this film's OST so many years ago. I found your channel literally yesterday, while looking for Avril 14th from Aphex Twin, and I'm already a fan!
Someday I'll be able to play this. And when I do I'll light a candle and play it for hours and hours in perfect solitude and peace. Beautiful piece of music.

Hi Josh. I stumbled across your music when searching for piano covers. I like covers when they're well done. All kinds of covers. I find the novel and different interpretations refreshing, especially when they are of songs I like. Your covers are great. I often wonder what it would be like to have a talent like yours. I'm unfortunately condemned to a life of appreciation. I know that's a cliche but there you go. I normally listen to your music at home on my computer with my headphones on. The time varies. Weekdays it will be evenings. Weekends could be anytime. I usually sit at my dining room table. My kids are on their devices playing games, chatting with friends, etc. My wife is also on her computer doing her thing. Watching movies and so on. Whatever passes the time during COVID I guess. Right now is Friday evening, in Italy, just north of Rome. I'm just chilling on UA-cam like I normally do, searching for new and old tunes. I'm looking out the window into my backyard. I'm lucky. We have fruit trees starting to bloom and the view is nice. A nature setting less than a half hour to the center of the city. I feel a range of emotions when I listen. The whole spectrum from happy to sad, angry, perplexed, confused, and heartbroken. You name it and I've probably felt it listening to songs and melodies of ALL kinds. I would say that music, primarily, gives me hope. It inspires and always affirms my deeply held belief that people are fundamentally good and capable of wonderful things. So thanks. Thanks for making my Friday evening that much better. By the way, I just listened to your version of Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence. A great movie that I watched many years ago. I think I'll watch it again.

Love this. Send me a photo of the fruit trees ✌️
@@joshcohenmusic Here's a link for a short video of my backyard with the fruit trees. There's apple, pear and cherry trees in video. The yard also has pomegranate, lemon, orange and fig trees.
