He’s a great partner. Gave very clear leads (which you need when dancing with unknown partner) while also letting her add her own flourishes. Always placed himself where he needed to be to let the dance flow. It would be a lot of fun to dance with him.

When you’re leading, you activate those moves, or show that you’re about to start them, by very specific arm/body movements. Like maybe you’ll lift your hand up when she gets close to show you’re about to start a twirl, or put her hand to your waist for her to move around you. You also react well to her movements afterwards, which he did perfectly.

He might brace his arm also indicating he doesn’t want her to come in, but wants to travel. The signals are quite subtle, so the lady needs to be able to follow. This is reinforced by body movement (placing himself where he would need to be if the lady makes the anticipated move, ready to be balanced). You might also signal with the hands in advance of the next move (e.g. if you're intending to dip, you need to brace body and hands to give the lady notice, even if it's only a second). It's all clearly visible here (although they don't do any dips) if you know where to look. And because he’s doing a great job, it’s easier for her to do a great job too. She has no problem responding to what he’s doing. No overbalancing or awkward twists as one partner is not ready for the other. I’ve seen a dance with a different partner where she sent herself into a spin. She wanted to go, and he caught up. Here, he very clearly leads it. He moves in advance of her so that he is balanced and holds up his hand in readiness. That way, when she goes, they will both be balanced and ready to spin out smoothly into the next move.

This lady does a lot of random dancing with one off partners at competitions. She has similar vid with another guy and he is almost as good a first time partner as this gentleman and the vid got almost identical responses from youtube watchers. Both are very nice to watch snd although it doesn't say I am sure she did well with them in both competitions. 🙂
