Commercial chicken farmer here, this is true. Also did you know the eggs are sometimes stored up to 2 months before hitting stores? To store them the coolers are held as close to freezing as possible without freezing the eggs. thats why some eggs are yellow and others are almost orange. Also the free range eggs are made from a smaller company that owns 10-30 barns and they get shipped within 2 weeks to the store.

As someone who actually study gastronomy grade, eggs have "salmonella" and they have small holes in it so the inside can breathe (in case it have a baby chicken)
So if you put an egg in water, salmonella is gonna get inside the egg
Just shake a bit the egg and you'll notice the air space because you can hear how the insides move

Rotten egg have rotting gas and the yolk get mixed with that gas and it makes light in weight so if the egg is light its means that its rotten and if the egg is heavy then its not rotten and you can tell the difference between rotten and not rotten egg without a glass of water and you can refund it in there where you bought it
