    As the son of an Irish immigrant I am very proud of the San Patricio's. They were honorable and brave warriors who rightly saw the Anglo American invasion of Mexico as the same as the Anglo British invasion and occupation of Ireland. Somos hermanos y hermanas. Viva Mexico y Erin go Bragh.

      Aren't the Celts the indigenous people of all Britain, not the Anglo Saxons? In my research the Germanic tribes came later. The Celts were already in Britain thousands of years prior.

      Basque were the original people, Celts came later. They settled in Ireland, Scotland and Wales probably England too but were eventually overrun by Germanic and Norman tribes.

    Galway borders county Mayo where my grandfather grew up on a farm in the family for centuries. I've been to both. Very proud of los San Patricio's and don't care if the anglo Americans consider them traitors that's a badge of honor not shame.

    As Mexican.. I'm so proud and thankful of them... not anyone fight for the true and against the evil in the worst circumstances... viva Irlanda - viva México...
    Bernard Brennan, an Irish-American tourist from San Francisco, said he learned about the battalion from a Mexican friend. On a recent afternoon, he snapped pictures of a carved stone plaque on the plaza where 16 of the Irish soldiers were hanged.
    "In memory of the Irish soldiers of the heroic St. Patrick Battalion, who gave their lives for the cause of Mexico during the unjust American invasion of 1847," the plaque says.
    Brennan said he doesn't see the soldiers as traitors.
    "As an Irish-American, I'm proud of them," he said. "Sometimes you have to stand up and say, 'What my country is doing is wrong.' I think they're heroes, heroes of conscience."

      @timlinator 3 роки тому +2

      I agree with Brennan. I'm also Irish-American living in San Francisco, my dad was an immigrant from Ireland. San Patricio's are HEROES not traitors. Anglos invaded Mexico like they did to Ireland and Los San Patricio's said fuck that we are fighting for Mexico and good on them, good men. Viva Mexico y Erin go Bragh.

    The clip fails to mention that the San Patricios were one of the most successful fighting units on the Mexican side. Santa Ana said that if he'd had six or eight more units like the San Patricios, California, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona would still belong to Mexico.

    The documentary fails to consider that Mexico had abolished Slavery in 1810 (though effective 1821) and so the Mexican States that were barely populated received immigrants seeking land and freedom. This was the main ideological dispute with many US landlords that were in favor of keeping slavery. So Riley and the others (among them Germans, French and Italians

I have it my blood to be more Mexican than others, I have a vested interest, genetically to want Mexico to survive as a sovereign nation, and therefore I am so thankful and appreciate my Irish brothers helping us against the British colonizers who tried to take our land my brother.

      Celebrated for giving their lives for fighting a Sectarian bloodthirsty army who burned Catholic churches and raped nuns in their Sectarian land grab. Rather be seen as a traitor than identify with that. You must be a proud man 👏

    From what I've read, it has been rumored that one of the flags of this battalion was preserved and displayed at Westpoint Academy for some time then taken down at some point and never seen again. I feel that the story has credibility because who the hell would make up a story like that?

    Well. being part Irish... Catholic & American... all I can say is ... "It's Complicated"!!!!!! But I admire the Irish for their bravery... and after being so foully mistreated by the British in Ireland & kicked off their own lands... I don't blame them for deserting for the hope of winning land & freedom (afterall that is what they came to America for in the FIRST place!!!)... if they were humiliated & mistreated by the U.S. Army at the time. Thank God Santa Anna didn't have many more of these rough & ready Irishmen... who just wanted their freedom, in the end! Otherwise the map would look very different... but I guess Providence saw it another way & we got the map.... we got!!! God Bless Ireland, The United States of America, & Mexico!

    • @kindlydude
      @kindlydude 6 років тому +1

      ...and yet... as many Irish who left... many more probably stayed (abused as they were!)... So THIS is why we won in the end!!! But the ambitious General Scott didn't become President! ...And the Anti-Slavery General Taylor~ the one reluctant to go to war for "mere land" ... but duty-bound to follow orders, became President!!! That was the one who looked like 'Davy Crockett' in the movie "One Man's Hero"! We got the humbler President... but yep, I think the Mexicans may have been cheated. Yet their government continued to treat them like "peons" even though they abolished slavery before we did. So maybe the Mexican/Texanos did better in the long run when the American/Mexican border was so drastically altered & many fought on our side as well! And at The Alamo! Like I said...
      "It's Complicated"!!!

      It's not complicated.. it was a robbery... and as the same way the rivers goes to the sea.. the land get back whom belongs.. Sooner or Later... for example.. Rome.. all the land Rome did conquer got back to their original owners (France, Spain, Germany etc..) The big diference about México.. is that México is a side of USA and a side of the stolen land. It is like France were a side of Quebec... ¿Did you know the US army slaughthered women and children toguether? Millions of Native-Americans people would have survived absolutely the same as Mexicans indigenous in all ancient Mexican territory... if ISRAEL itself (God's people) suffered the wrath of God because of their bad deeds.. I don't want to imagine how will be the price for great nation of the United States paying their faults for a Stolen Land and Innocent People Murdered...

    To Bob Scott...The San Patricios joined the cause for promises of land, money, military commissions, but ultimately it was because they were Catholic as was the Mexican forces they were to fight against. Indeed as badly treated as the Irish were by the US Army it was worse for Mexican Army because many of its officers looked down on their own troops because they weren't of the same class let alone ethnic identity. Only 7 out of 19'Mexican States sent conscripts and the chaos following French leaving in the early 1820s saw Presidents and their Cabinets change so often before the war few knew who would be in authority. The myth that it was a great patriotic cause only came after it was over and 9% of the US Army deserted during the war and even Lincoln who was in Congress spoke against the war as did Frederick Douglas. The story of the San Patricios as freedom fighters isn't entirely honest, nor that they were swayed only by compassion for Mexico cause as it swayed between democracy/dictatorship depending on the year. By the way, I'm Scotch-Irish from my great grandparents and went to Catholic school,to so Anglo scum ma ass......

    Dearfainn gur ar an chogadh seo a bhfuil an leagan béarla den amhrán Fernando de chuid Abba bainteach. Sa bhl. 1846 bhí An Gorta Mór i réim sa bhaile in Éireann agus tighearnaí talún ag fáil réidh leis an phobal agus iad ag éag nó ag dul ar imirce. Chaill Méxicanos leath na tíre ina dhiaidh troid in aghaidh 'dream le gunnaí móra ag teacht aduaidh ina dtreo'. No sé porqué pero tenemos una simpatía natural por México!

    I wonder if this is the reason why the Irish were hated by USA&mistreated.
    I was so shocked to learn this story the first thing i did was run and ask my parents about it (they are Mexican immigrants) the response was (USA and México never went to war with each other) 😣 I realized that they did not have much of an education plus they immigrated at a young age.
