Trying Some Delicious Bulgarian Food In Sofia 🇧🇬

- Follow me on my journey to Sofia the capital of Bulgaria where I tried some local foods and explored the city full of history.
Sofia has some nice foods which I recommend everyone to try. I’ve listed below everything that I tried
Stop 1 : Banitsa, a popular pastry which is very common by the natives for breakfast. I had a drink with it called Ayran which is a Turkish drink which is drank with Banitsa
Stop 2 : I had Grilled trout with Shopsky salad which was my favourite things to eat whilst here in Sofia. It came with bread and spices which is complimentary which you go to most eateries.
3: I visited the oldest restaurant in Sofia called Contessa . I had Shopsky salad , torator which is a cold soup made from Yogurt, cucumber Dill and is very popular and normally comes as a starter. I also had Moucassa which is layers of egg, potatoes, minced meat and this was one of my favourite dishes.
My time here was limited and didn’t get to try other tasty dishes. Hope you enjoyed the content.

@@teflontravelsThe "harvester's tarator" (old times poor people dish) is made by water and vinegar instead of yogurt.
Many people say that ayrian is a Turkish drink, but many people forget that ayrian is mainly composed of yogurt, which is a natural product of the fermentation of fresh milk with the bacterium Lactobacillus Bulgaricus founded only on the modern Bulgarian territory, which means that ayrian is a typical Bulgarian drink because the bacteria is available only in Bulgaria, not other region and place in the Earth. And the conclusion is that, most likely, ayrian as a name was renamed during the 500 years of Ottoman slavery in Bulgaria, as most probably many other drinks and dishes, because before 500 years of Ottoman slavery in Bulgaria, our country was empire for centruries.
That’s some interesting history and I can understand it better now. It all makes sense now

@@teflontravels imagine me arrested for the first time,but i am calm and cooperative and the cops were not rude to me ,when they see a inteligent and normal person they act also inteligent,but there was a gipsy thief that had stolen rails from the rail way and this is very dangerous for the people in the train,arrested in the sell next to mine and he was resisting and the cops electricuted him😂😂😂i was shocked to hear that,after 24 hours they let you go home ,just confiscated a litle hashish

That’s interesting because most articles I’ve researched said Sofia is the oldest and I’ve seen the same in Bulgarian forums. Did this change over the years?
@@teflontravels Sofia is old, yes, but the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe is Plovdiv and even that I am living in Sofia for me Plovdiv is much, much nice place to live or explore.

You have to pit some olive oil or sunflower oil and vinegar on the shpska salad to have the full flavour of it! And may be a little bit of some extra salt. The Shpopsja salad goes very well with our national drink rakia. Ib the summer, in the evening order a shopsaka salad, put the olive oil, salt and vinegar and order a cup of rakia with ice as starter and a new universe will open for you ! Enjoy!

The restaurant you ate in manastirska magernica,means the place in the monastery where the monks eat,and the recipies are collected from monasteries from arround bulgaria and these recipies were acumulated by the monks from thousand years our oldest monasteries are from the 800s a.d.....and as you probably know the monks cook a real gurme food and they produce the best wine and rakia and have the best honey and forest fruits jem,cheese yellow cheese and many more stuff they are selfsufficiant

You can try also Franch fries with Bulgarian white cheese
They go very well as a side dish to beer.

Better = banitza with boza. 👍👍 But boza with sugar, not with sweeteners.

@@teflontravels That is a classic combination here, I mean this certain. Even more than banitza with ayran. I was raised with this. Sadly the quality of the boza is not like before. Also, many banitza makers use cottage cheese instead of white cheese, the taste is not the same.
The "Contessa" restaurant is one of the really old and traditional restaurants for ordinary people. It is located in a nabourhood that once was populated by Jewish and Armenian people and working class Bulgarians. The food there is very good!

Plovdiv is considered to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in Europe. Sofia is anciend but not that ancient. You got it wrong.

I think it’s mainly because savoury goes with savoury for most people. Boza in my wouldn’t go well because of the sweetness

Just to say, every one is calling Airan is Turkish, but is not, they have it from when the Ottoman Empire was occupied the Balkans, the name its self is coming from one of the Ancient word for white, like the milk color, and other thing is that the yoghurt from which is made the Airan, is also coming from the Balkan population, so how someone who came thousands of years later will have a drink from something created in ancient times in the territory way before the newcomers, its same with the Baklava, all the people know is Turkish, and other foods too, because when they took over that lands they adopted some of the traditions and the food and even some words, as well as the dna in the north of they country, and because the Ottoman Empire was ruling 500 years the lands, the whole world knows its coming from them, there are a lot of things like that which are famous in the wrong way
Also i see in the comments, Plovdiv is the oldest city in the records, but also there are other candidates in Bulgaira, which are coming to be even older, and probably someday they will say it, like the town under the Veliko Tarnovo, was build on and some other places

@@teflontravels Please skip these anti-Turk comments. Some of my compatriots still live 2 centuries ago. I don't like they and their hate to be the image of Bulgaria. Balkan countries cuisines has much in common. Such quarrels are pointless. For example, Greeks also have moussaka, just theirs is with added cinnamon.
Tarator, boza, tripe soup and the national spirit - rakia are the things foreigners sometimes struggle with.
I myself only like 1 of those 4, even though I'm Bulgarian.
Apart from those they seem to enjoy most other dishes.
You should try some of the oven baked claypot dishes with meat and vegetables known as "gyuvech".

Heading to Bulgaria next week for 10 days (mostly Sofia), really looking forward to it. My 13 y/o son will be very happy with the variety of food

The liquid in the last food is water with a ton of sugar. Otherwise, tarator is basically ayran with cucumbers, dill and garlic. It's strange that you liked ayran, but not tarator (unless you didn't like some of the other ingredients). Glad that you loved Sofia!
That’s a good comparison, and I think I didn’t like it as much because of the other ingredients. It wasn’t that bad but just wasn’t easy to get use to 🤦🏾♂️
