I have a massive query:- the dual lock is insanely tough, BUT how do I fasten the tape to the board surface and the pedals? If the tape has sticky adhesive on the back then surely that area becomes the weakest link instead? Or am I missing something? (On my present board I have a Marshall Blues pedal which is heavy and every time the closed pedal box is carried the pedal falls off inside - but it's not the Velcro that yields, it's the adhesive on the back of the tape.)
Marmaduke Winterbotham That was exactly my experience. The sticky side becomes the weakest link. I used it to connect the power source under the board, it just can't do the job under the board for long term purposes.
Sorry to say that the glue on the dual lock does not hold up to heat very well. Very much like what happens to Velcro. If I have to leave my pedal board in my car on a hot day the glue starts to melt. I still prefer the dual lock to Velcro. Guess I need to move to a cooler climate.
On the power supply brick itself? Wont the heat cause the glue to weaken though? Anyone here already try it for long home practice, long rehearsals or gigs? Used dual lock on their power supply under the board that is?
Ryan, what do you suggest for the pedals that have rubber bases or bottoms. I know velcro doesn't stick well but does the dual lock stick better, or do you try removing the rubber bottoms on these pedals.
to be honest I haven't tried it; even when I used velcro I took those rubber bottoms off my boss pedals so that they would sit lower and more evenly. the dual lock does stick to just about everything, though; i think the issue would be more from the rubber being not quite even than anything else.
No, I already had that guy bolted in there, haha. But if you covered the brackets where you screw it on (it has to have brackets for a PT-2, anyway) with Dual Lock, I bet money it would hold. I actually have a Voodoo Lab ISO-5 under there now too, and that one is attached with Dual Lock -- hasn't fallen off once!
+Juan Lopez Your kit shipped with enough extra for future stuff; but I sell it on the site 3 feet at a time as well: duallockpedalboard.com. Glad you're happy with it! :)
@@kiesshauer wow I just remember your channel! Wow I love this product! I was looking for it, and for one reason I forgot the name. Thank you so much again!
Hello. SUPER bummed out, over here. Ryan - have you replaced all of the screws on the bottoms of your pedals? My Pedal Train and all of my pedals are at my tech's. After spending $'s on the Dual Lock and to have all of the Mogami cables custom made, it seems that the Dual Lock is so low profile that it won't clear the screws on the bottoms of the pedals. Tried putting the Dual Lock over the screws...does not hold well enough. Suggestions? I'm playing tonight.
Man, I'm sorry to hear about that! Do you have some older pedals or something? Out of all the pedals I've owned over the years, I can only think of 1 that didn't work straight away -- it was an ABY box that I had to remove the bottom of to attach it. Other than that, all the screws on all the rest of my pedals were flat screws that sit flush with the bottom. I tended to not cover them up anyway in case I wanted to open it up and put the Dual Lock just above and below the screws instead, but....either way it worked fine. Anyway, I'm very interested in what you've got going on -- maybe you can email me at info@duallockpedalboard.com with some pictures? I'm guessing if you have protruding screws that you couldn't really stick well with the velcro either? Let me know -- sorry again for the issues!
I literally just covered my board in this and put it on my BOSS ES-8 and I cannot get it to grip/lock at all. I'm pushing with all of my weight and it won't click. This stuff was crazy expensive and it looks like it has failed completely for me.
I was going to delete my comment but I"m going to leave it up because I was fortunately able to figure out how to resolve this issue but am certain other people might run into this same thing. When he says only use a small amount on larger pedals, that's not just to be conservative with it. You will not be able to make it lock if you cover your large pedals or switchers with it. This IS NOT Velcro so don't make the mistake I did by assuming more dual lock means your pedals are more secure because it doesn't scale in those terms.
+Joel Pheister Joel, you don't have one of my kits, do you? I'm generally cheaper than just buying it elsewhere (unless you find some crazy sale). I'm curious what model of Dual Lock you're using; I tested several types, and the basic type was much too strong for this application, so I use low profile stuff instead, and it's much less forceful. You also have to be careful about covering your whole pedals -- if you cover the board, you really only need little squares on the corners or something along those lines to get a happy medium of 'secure but not like wrestling a bear to get them on and off'. Hope that helps, man.
+Ryan Kiesshauer, I unfortunately didn't buy your product just got a bunch of 1" dual lock on Amazon. I'm wishing I had gotten it from you. I might be in serious trouble because I got the ES-8 to stick...but now I CANNOT get it off. I'm a big dood and it's not budging. Man I hope people read this and see it as a cautionary tale. I even tried to pry bar it off. It's not in the worst position on my board but I think I'm screwed if I ever need to take it off. Ugh. Know your gear, people. Even your Velcro it seems.
+Joel Pheister That stinks, man. :( It sounds like you probably put a lot of it on your ES-8. A couple things I'd try to get it off: if there is a continuous strip of DL under it that covers the length of your board, try to grab one of the edges that is not underneath the pedal and get it to start peeling off. If you have enough leeway, you might be able to pull the whole pedal and both pieces of DL off that way. Worst case, I know 3M (and others) sell spray cans of what is called "adhesive remover"...you could try that, trying to spray it underneath the DL strips on your board to get them to come off easier. Hopefully that helps! And yeah, research is pretty key. :(
+Ryan Kiesshauer fantastic ideas I did not think of. I have another board I am gonna convert, I'll be getting your product for sure! Cheers and thank you!!!
Well depending on what model you got, the model could be different. I use the low-profile stuff (which works better to me based on my testing of a few of them) and I cut the strips to length for Pedaltrain boards. Mine's also cheaper per foot than anything I've seen, so let me know if you do find something cheaper.
how much extra comes with a kit? i have a pedaltrain pro that i want to finish with dual lock. is there any specific reason i shouldn't just order 11 yards of 1" SJ4575 for $51 shipped from itapestore and cut it myself?
I don't know what you ordered so it's quite literally impossible for me to tell you. :) But in general mine is cheaper. The model could be different, as I use low-profile Dual Lock. And I pre-cut the strips -- not a big deal but still a difference.
i haven't actually ordered anything yet, but on itapestore SJ4575 (the same low profile model that you use for these kits as stated in your faq) is $4.70/yd if you buy at least 6 yds. are you only cutting them to length, or does the width also have to be adjusted in order to fit two strips per rail? if they only have to be cut to length then by my calculation i should need a little less than 9 yds to cover 5 32" rails from end to end. even with buying 2 extra yds to accommodate my pedals, that only comes out to $51.70 with free shipping, which is about $20 less than your asking price for the pedaltrain pro kit.
Yeah they must have changed their pricing structure recently. I could (and always) match prices where I can, and I would happily do that here, but that free shipping promo will be the difference maker. I can't eat shipping costs as an individual -- benefit of going with a larger company, I suppose. So yeah if you don't mind cutting them to length yourself (it's not hard) then you'd save shipping costs going with them.
The Black SJ4575 I believe; it's the low-profile stuff. That's the stuff I liked best out of all the testing I did, and I'm never going back to velcro. :)
I've used it forever and it still hasn't worn out. You can check all the specifics for this model (SJ4575) on 3M's website, but most of the time it wears out from a ton of removing and re-attaching; and I'll do that now and then to swap a pedal or rearrange my board or something, but not anywhere near enough for it to wear out!
@@kiesshauer Ah ok, good to know. I'm actually considering getting this for this year's Pedalboard Project I have going on. Also, I see people talk about the adhesive on the Dual Lock being an issue in hot humid areas, because they say that it doesn't stick well on the board, but unless you live in a neutral temperature area, per se, it's shouldn't be an issue, right?
@@TotalEvo7 I suppose it depends largely on where you live and what you do, but I can only speak from my experience. I suppose if you do either of those things it might be a consideration -- but then again, so would velcro!
Can you tell me why your kits are so much more expensive than the 3M Dual Lock that I can buy at Target, Ace, etc? Is your Dual Lock specially designed or superior to the Dual Lock that is on store shelves? Thanks
Well, honesty I'd never seen it in a store before. Mine is just the low-profile stuff (found that worked best strength and looks wise in my testing) - but I hadn't found any prices better than mine. If you find some cheaper and wanna measure and cut your own, by all means do it! :) but I think my pricing is good, and I believe in it, hence the site. :) Hope that helps!
Hi, I have some dual lock and it is 26mm wide, so 52mm wide for two parallel strips on a bar on the Pedaltrain. But the bar on the Pedaltrain is about 48mm wide before the metal starts to round off. Do you cut 4 or 5mm off of the width of one of the dual lock strips, or leave it hanging over the pedaltrain bar? Thanks.
