    You've gone from two puzzle solving friends sharing solutions and your hobby on youtube to having a community that creates new puzzles and interesting sudoku variants. Possibly one of the best things that has ever happened to the puzzling world.
    I've recently watched the thermonuclear sudoku, which was a beautifully set puzzle as a guy's debut puzzle. Things like this are people's lives that you have catalysed into new hobbies that they had never had before. Its wonderful to see. It's been especially wonderful to see this channel grow and change over the past couple of years. It inspired me to pick up killer sudokus, and although I dont get much time for them anymore, it's still something I enjoy.
    You say often you read all the comments, so hello! Hope your day is going well. It's been excruciatingly hot in UK so I hope you're staying hydrated ;)

      I noticed that. I assume that he's pointing out that the six cage did not have to take one of those 27 cells, because it could have gone to the bottom left instead. I really don't know, though.

      Yes it said that. The main point of the logic remains (ie that there cannot be a repeated 7/8/9 region in this section of the grid) but, as you say, the 6 didn't actually need to contribute to the 27.

    I love the lines in the first software. It's like laying down the smoothest line of green ink you've ever seen, somehow.
    Penpa, I will not discuss, lol.
    Puzzles were good, I think Fillomino might be growing on me. Time on the first puzzle was about 30 minutes, the second I'm not sure as I misunderstood the ruleset originally and that wasted a lot of time. One thing I noticed was the first puzzle had a LOT of opportunities to make use of uniqueness considerations to save time. I didn't because I'm stubborn that way.

    • @MateoJH
      @MateoJH 4 роки тому +1

      Same here.
      I first noticed the 3 boxed between the sets of 2 in the bottom left of the grid and considered that if the 4 didn't come in and force the positions of the 3, the result would be a region of size 1 that could have been placed anywhere.
      But, like you, I needed to prove it to myself another way.
      Besides, who knows when a mistake might slip through the cracks and we actually find something with more than one solution.
      If we always solved while assuming uniqueness, we'd never know!

    So someone can correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe that, from 15:02 when he places the 6 in r6c7, you can disambiguate the 4 and 3 cages near it by the principle of uniqueness. That is, if the 6 region didn't take r9c6, then there would be three different ways of fulfilling the 4 and 3 cages (either the 4 goes left and there's a 1 to the right of it, or the 4 goes right and there's a 1 in either r8c3 or r9c4). The only way that region can be disambiguated is if the 6 region takes that square, and so therefore if we assume the puzzle has a unique solution then the 6 _must_ take that square.

    • @colemanolson

    • @kadeholman414
      @kadeholman414 4 роки тому

      Thats how I did it. If the 4 doesn't enter that region, 3 squares make up the 3 region then youd put a 1 in the remaining square. But no matter where you put the 1 it would technically work so there's no unique solution, so the 4 must go left there

    @16:30 So what I noticed when you're down to a smaller space with a lot of large numbers, what I did was sum up all the cells of that irregular region, subtracted a few to finish the 3 4 and 5 regions which poke in by one cell each, subtracted the stray 1 cell, and came up with 36. In a region which must contain at LEAST a 5 6 7 8 and 9 cage, which already sum to 35, with only 1 cell left over. Which confirms that all the large givens in that space are connected in unique cages. Like the 6s you began with @17:00, all 3 of those must be the same cage.

    32:45 - That cage didn't need to have the 9 to be a straight, it could have been 10,11,12,13,1 using an ace. The 13 can't reach that cage though so it doesn't work anyway.

    Puzzle 1: 35 Minutes. Fun! On to the second. Oh, yeah. I should also say that to finish the puzzle I had to count the number of squares in the grid and subtract off all the regions I knew were in it so I could see how many squares were left that I needed to account for. And it's interesting that Simon does close to the beginning what I left for last. I probably would have been faster had I noticed the way he did it. Well, except I had the "8" region on the left a sooner in the solve than Simon. I just hadn't figured out the 5's yet so didn't know if the bottom left square was a 1 or a 6. Oh I like the blue dialogue box behind the rules that we can't read. ;)

    First puzzle took me about 35 minutes. 'twas my first Fillomino. The second one I got the break-ins rather quickly but messed up some logic along the way and got a conflict with the 7s. Turns out I messed up the 13 because I just added the two cells in row one without considering row three. That forced the 11 and then the 7 down, causing the conflict. I did catch that the last poker cage had to include a hidden 1 or 2 before my puzzle broke. Those puzzles have been a lot of fun!

    Brilliantly done. On the Poker Filomino, you could have guessed much earlier that "6" was already part of the poker hand. Why? The current known numbers were "7", "7", and "11". The two must be different and can only be either "1" or "2", or "6" with 2 degrees of freedom / cells (to create). If "6" was not a part of the hand, then "1" and "2" would've been part of the hand, which is a contradiction already because you would have added 3 degrees of freedom / cells already which is not allowed. :)

    I don't think Simon considers a straight of 10 to ace (10, 11, 12, 13, 1). Not sure if this would affect anything though.

    • @jaeusa160
      @jaeusa160 4 роки тому

      Not considered but there was also no path for the 12 and 11 to reach the top left boxes with how the given digits were gating the grid. The 12 was one cell shy of potentially reaching the top-left box, and the two 11s were already a fixed maximum taxi cab distance, preventing the left 11 from dipping down 1 to the box below it.
      Re-scanning as I type, the top right box could potentially be reached by 10 11 12 and a stray 1, but since the forced 11 clue boxed the 13 around the corner to the left, a 13 could never reach the top right box.
      That was indeed a fair and missed consideration which was only 1-2 cells shy of being possible in 3 boxes.

    • @moonglum101
      @moonglum101 4 роки тому

      If memory serves me correctly, I remember considering it and 10,11,12 and 13 aren't all able to reach the same poker hand region, making it impossible and an ace (1) irrelevant to any such considerations.

    8:13 “Uniqueness” could solve the 3-region seeded at r8c4. If r9c4 is part of the 3-region, you get a ‘deadly pattern’ that reminds me of the ambiguous pairs in sudoku. It leads to two equally valid solutions. You could finish the 3-region using r9c3, leaving r8c3 as a 1-region, or vice versa. You can therefore conclude that r9c4 is NOT part of the 3 region, as it leads to a non-unique solution, and therefore the 3-region must extend left and down.

  • @57thorns
    @57thorns 4 роки тому

    I was surpriset at how "easily" (well...) the second puzzle gave up its secret. One key thing at 31:16 is that there is another 13 in r4c3 to allow 13 to connect to itself. This leaves us with just one possible straight, and that I think is the key breaking. The 13-11 is just the groundwork.
    After that, there were a lot more restraints in the grid.
    32:00 Instantly yes, because 11 is ruled out of all except two boxes, and there are three 11 in one of them, so 13,12 and 11 are impossible for the straight.

    First puzzle: You know? Given that I'm not that familiar with Fillomino, I'll take a time of 27 minutes on a puzzle that should take 'expert solvers' 15. (I enjoy the puzzle type, I'm just not as familiar with them as I probably should be). Very enjoyable, and I really enjoyed just how symmetrical that grid was especially with the counting up from 1 to 9 in a diamond formation. Very enjoyable watch as well.
    Wasn't able to see where to get started on the second puzzle after proving both 11s and 13 were part of the same region, there was only one broad path to get the 11s to do so with no room for deviations which gave a broad path for the 13s with room for deviations and that left 2 cells for hidden regions (so no room for a 3 region), and that the straight needed to be 6 through 10 due to the restrictions on the grid and where the hands were - about where you got at 32:00 into the video - so that was a very interesting solve to watch. (There is a way of drawing boundries in that software - It's the Edge function)

    There was a flaw in your logic @32:00 - The Straight can't contain a five, so it has to contain a ten (Ace-King-Queen-Jack-Ten as the highest possible Straight, or Ten-Nine-Eight-Seven-Six as the lowest). The nine is not required, since the Ace can act as highest value.
    It still works out though, because the thirteen can't reach the cage on the right side, which would force the Straight to be Twelve-Eleven-Ten-Nine-Eight (Or lower) if it were to be in the right cage, and NOW your logic with the nine applies (Because with the thirteen being unable to reach the right cage, it now has to contain a nine, which is impossible).

      I managed to do both on mobile. For the first, tick the 'input numbers by panel' checkbox.
      For the second, switch the 'panel:' toggle from 'off' to 'on', then select the 'number' input mode.
      Despite Simon saying you cannot, you can enter cell borders in the second puzzle by switching the input mode to 'edge'.

    Ok, I know I'm stupid, but I think this secound puzzle was not filled right. At the end Simon should fill box with 2 pairs, not one. One pair was filled long before it (at bottom left box).

      @RichSmith77 4 роки тому

      There needs to be two "one pair" hands, according to the rules. No hand is required to have "two pairs".

      @@RichSmith77 oh, gosh... That's true. As I said - I am stupid, so it was very possible that I'm not right. xD

      @@XeoN-PL You don't need to be stupid to get confused by that. I had to read it multiple times before it sunk in. I think it's natural to read "one pair, one pair" and convert it as "oh, so two pairs then". 😀

    At 7:05 You could've known that r9c3 was 4 because if it was a 3 or a 1 the puzzle would not have a unique solution.

    This is not valid in this particular instance of poker puzzle, but technically 10,11,12,13,1 is also a straight (a royal straight, ten to ace), meaning that there was theoretically a way to have a straight without 10. Does not apply to this puzzle, as you could not get 13 in, but this option was not considered

    I usually read the rules, not listen to them at the start, so I though that hidden polyominoes can't be any of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 because they are all present in the grid.

    I could be wrong but I think your logic regarding the straight early on was flawed. I could see no reason the straight could not contain a 1 (ie 10, 11, 12, 13, 1). Also a note that may or may not make future poker puzzles a little easier. Any straight in poker MUST contain a 5 OR a 10.
