Starry Night is one of Vincent Van Gough's most famous paintings. There is a video of this song which displays Van Gough's paintings as a slideshow. I think it adds to the impact of the lyrics to see his art while Don McLean describes them.
Vincent Van Gough was an artist who was never appreciated in his own time. I think he only ever sold one painting if my memory is right. He struggled with mental health and eventually took his own life. His painting are worth multiple millions today, but he died pretty much penniless.
Things as you described are still happening today, in different ways, in a different time, for different reasons, but the suffocation of genius is still the same. Tragedy declares no century as home.
There is a video of Don singing this song along with a gallery of Vincent Van Gough's paintings. It really brings the song alive. This happens to be one of my favorite songs of all time.
He is referring to Vincent Van Gough the famous artist...most of the lyrics are reference to famous pieces Van Gough did...Starry Night is probably his most famous painting
Don Mclean wrote this song at a time when he was struggling with sadness he never really resolved, from the death years earlier of his father, his feeling of alienation from his peers, his frustration about a relationship that had soured and which he felt not understood, all while he was teaching music at a public school board in New Rochelle, NY, and one day, arriving early, he saw and read a sympathetic book about Vincent Van Gogh, written by the artist's brother, that included images of his painting, and he felt something that connected to his own struggles, and wrote the lyrics then and there on some scrap paper. So while the lyrics tell the story of Van Gogh, whose mental struggles, innovative style and subject matter made him an outcast -- he painted Starry Night while inside a mental asylum -- the feelings Don shows are powerful because they reflected some of what he felt too.
So what makes it your business to tell the world about the personal struggles of artists, we all have the right to privacy, something your type forgets.
@@davisworth5114 Don shared shared struggles in the documentary he back that was released earlier this summer, 'The Day The Music Died: The Story Of Don McLean's 'American Pie" I'd suggest you watch the documentary rather than accuse someone you don't know of sharing what Don chose to disclose as part of the documentary that he actively promoted. It was released July 19 by Paramount. Everything I mentioned was either disclosed by Don himself in the documentary or in earlier interviews. What is my "type"? Someone who would do basic research before deciding if I had grounds to attack a stranger on UA-cam.
@@davisworth5114 Are you serious? Don McLean has himself publicly disclosed all of this information about himself on more than one occasion. Maybe try doing some research... something "your type" apparently doesn't do.
@@davisworth5114 Are you kidding?!..If it's true then Mclean obviously shared it with the world already, or where else would it have come from?!..What a weird comment!
Vincent Van Gogh the artist who took his own life in his late 30's - he suffered depression for sure - but his art was always beautiful and he saw the beauty in nature - his letters (over 500 of them) - I have a book of about 70 of them - mostly to his brother - he writes as well as he painted and admired nature and love and spoke of them frequently - This song to me now has so much more meaning
I know many on here have said that it is about Vincent van Gogh, which is true but this song can pertain to anyone who struggles with mental health, or knows someone who does, and struggles to get anyone to notice.
This song is an absolute masterpiece … Referring to Vincent Van Gogh … His famous painting Starry starry night recently sold for millions ! Vincent Van Gogh committed suicide… His paintings all told a story ! An absolute genius! Sadly a troubled one ….
Lovely comments. You didn't Know anything about Don Mclean or Vincent Van Gogh, but you got the meaning. Vincent died penniless, he died in 1890. He suffered from depression. His painting Starry Night is now worth 100 million!
Starry Night is the name of a painting Vincent VanGogh was the artist Listen to the song a few more times while looking at the painting if you ever get the chance. You're right, it is a beautiful song.
The song is a tribute to the great artist Vincent Van Gogh, who did suffer from mental and physical illness and who died penniless; his art unappreciated. Nowadays, it's not unusual to hear of a Van Gogh selling for more than 60 million. Look up his work and you'll see why. This was also Tupac Shakur's favorite song; his girlfriend played it in his hospital room, making sure that it was the last song he heard.
OMG, what are you talking about? how do people NOT know who Vincent Van gogh is, was. Literally one of the most famous painters IN THE WORLD. IT'S RIGHT THERE, "STARRY STARRY NIGHT" Don McLean is literally singing out so beautifully describing many portraits van gogh is famous for. "the asrtist's loving hands" it's right there in the song. SMH. SAD!
