MIZUNO IRON FITTING - SHOULD ALL AMATEURS GET FITTED?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- Mizuno Europe allowed me to film, what I believe to be THE most in depth iron fitting vlog, there is on UA-cam, at their Performance Centre at Bearwood Lakes, UK.
I was looking to change irons, for the big push toward single figures, and heard so much about the 3d Optimizer. But how accurate is the system and will it benefit consumers?
This vlog looks to answer this as well as:
Should all amateurs get fitted for their golf clubs?
How accurate is the Shaft Optimizer?
Does swing speed determine shaft flex?
Does shaft weight affect dispersion?
After this please take a look at my WITB 2019 & WITB 2020 to see how its all gone.

Great video Rob, you've answered so many questions about the 3D optimizer. I think the Equalizer needs to meet the Optimizer
Lol cheers Rob. Means a lot does that. Hope it wasn’t too boring with the parts about my own game? I wanted folk to get a true understanding what happens in a good fitting and the things that could and should be asked within that fit, so the fitter can really taylor it to the individual
Keep it going Rob, there's a field for average golfers out there and you'll get better as you go along bud.
That’s Neil 👍🏻 Means a lot, pal
@@robpottergolf you latest vid was also very good mate, very good idea at times like this Rob, your a good guy mate always liked your humour when you used be on with Rick, love your attitude and get your banter, I'm from St. Helens so I get you.
Superb video Rob, a great insight for those people who have never had a proper club fitting. As you know I play the Mizuno 919 Forged Irons. I had the proper fitting using the shaft optimiser with Ian at Fleetwood. Using that they came up with the perfect shaft for my swing. I’m using the KBS S Taper 120g.
Cheers Dave. Glad you liked it mate. That Optimizer is brill, ain’t it?
Awesome you shining the light in that Mizuno optimizer. It’s a good piece of equipment 👍
Cheers mate. It’s a great piece of kit.
Hi Rob I would have thought that when you begin golf that would be the most important time to be fitted as you probably know that if you play with ill fitted clubs you start to make too many compensations in order to get the clubs to work,at least then you can't blame the clubs then as you improve over the next 5-6 years go again to see if any changes need making but YES the beginning would be the time to get fitted even if you never go again, good content mate!😷
Cheers John. That’s why I stated in the video, golfers of all levels should get custom fit, and it’s something o used to say in the vlogs with Rick
Looking forward to this rob 👍👍👍👍
Enjoyed that mate keep them coming.
Cheers buddy 👍🏻
Cracking cracking video Debby and thanks for sharing 👏👏👍
Cheers Tommie
I enjoyed that Rob, thank you 👍
Living in the North West, as we do, it might be an idea for you to give Tour X Golf a coat of looking at? The advantage of going there...you're not limited to a single marque/brand. They'll fit you for what works best for you, not what works best with a particular brand.
They'll also go through your full bag for you...could be an expensive trip and delay the Mevo+ purchase 😉
I’ve been to see Nick. He’s got a fantastic facility, hasn’t he? I have some of my putting lessons there with Lee. Nick and I was going to work on a project together with drivers, but he’s so busy, it’s never come about. I’d love the chance to do some work with him. I think it’d be a great partnership. And yeah, you’re right, he has so many options there.
@@robpottergolf The best are always busy Rob...
Now you're back to producing videos maybe you should try him again? It's good for both of you...actually it's a little better for you as it gives you content AND improves your bag. Nick just gets exposure lol
Brilliant Video Rob!
Great video Rob.
Thanks Peter
I got fit for mp 20 mb with the optimizer and felt good at store but on course the numbers didn’t match up to simulator and did not like the shafts recommended at all had to change out from kbs c taper to s300 and now the irons are perfect
Yeah it can happen. We don’t all, especially us amateurs, swing the same on each given day. At the time of fitting the shaft probably was right or you’d have had one or two others potentially that you could have used. It’s deffo not a perfect science with or without the aid of the Optimizer
Nice video Rob. Do you have any idea what your swing speed is with the Driver? I would like to compare with my numbers. Thanks! Take care.
Hi Maxine. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend. My swing with the driver is around 90mph. I’m only a shorty off the tee due to the casting I’m still battling with
Good info on fitting Rob, well done 👍
Thanks Keith. It’s a long vlog but I really think that system is the best around. That’s not to say standard fitting studies aren’t good, but this is so accurate
@@robpottergolf
Agree. So wish I was 40 again, I'd have gone down this route, no doubt.
It’s relevant for any age though buddy. It’ll work regardless
@@robpottergolf
I have a pretty good idea what's suits, probably reached my limit by now at my age. I'll keep trying to get better though.
Should have tried the mizuno tour x ball to increase your spin
We were using Mizuno balls on the day
Lots of interesting info. My own experience with the Mizuno Optimizer turned out to be a NIGHTMARE, however, I was not fit by Mizuno staffers, but at one of my local shops.
I was playing clubs with a Project X LZ 5.0, which I was told, in the LZ is between a regular and a Senior flex. I still felt the shaft was too heavy, and getting fit for new irons, I expected to be told that I should get a lightweight 90 gram steel, or one of the newer 95 gram graphite shafts. The results of the Optimizer had me fit into the same Project X LZ I had in my JPX 900s, but a flex HEAVIER, 5.5. When I got the irons I was "bottom grooving" every shot. Luckily, PGA TOUR Superstore has a 90 day "Playability Guarantee," so I was able to return them and get irons with a much lighter shaft.
Exactly the same issue for me Joe, optimiser went from my regular shafts to Modus120xs. Launch is too low when hit well, and suffering lots of bottom groove hits. Only played with them 2 to 3 times so hoping it's just some time to adjust and I can turn it around but is a concern.
@@markdavies2103 Sorry to hear that. Hoping I was the only one who was "Floptimized."
Hiya Joe. How’s things stateside? That’s crazy you had that experience, because as a rule you’d have tested out the various shafts in the fitting session with data from Trackman. Did this not happen? Yes it’ll give you 3 strongly advised but there’s also a further 10 shafts the system feels you could also use. So I’m really surprised how it worked out for you.
Hiya Mark, you’ll see my reply back to Joe. Did you try the option of shafts the Optimizer gave? Really surprised you had that experience. Prior to me having the fitting I had nothing out positive reviews of friends who’d been fitted by the Mizuno guys at demo days or down at the fitting centre. Thanks for leaving a comment though pal. Hope you get stuff sorted
@@robpottergolf Golf courses never closed in my area, and the course operators are practically begging people to come out and play, so I'm playing my usual 3-5 times/week, depending on the weather. PGA TOUR Superstore has indoor fitting only, so no benefit of Trackman. I didn't go over any list of shafts, was only told that the Project X LZ (which I never really liked in my JPX 900s anyway) was the shaft, and I didn't feel good about arguing with the technology of the Optimizer. Stay safe!
Rob, would you have been tempted to blend a set if you'd bought some, HMB's at the top, maybe a blade at the bottom?
Hi Jeremy. Thanks for commenting. The HMB’s weren’t out when I went there at the end of 2018, sadly, othererwise I probably would have. Instead I got an 5i in the MMC Fly-Hi series, which is great and I game both 3 & 4 CLK Hybrids. The blades just wouldn’t have gone anywhere for me, so the MMC’s where spot on. Even Peter Finch has been fitted for MP20 MMC’s from 7i upwards. So I’m in good company.
Those irons have been a game changer fir me. Watch my WITB 2019 & the updated one for 2020 and you’ll see the entire line ups
@@robpottergolf I know you're always very modest about your swing, but you must be hitting them out of the middle?
Even the pros seem to prefer the MMC's over the blades.
Hi Rob, I have just subscribed to the channel as I enjoyed it when you did mid handicap testing with Rick. I would advise getting fitted for new clubs because there are many reasons why you should. For many years I would buy new clubs and they probably were not always the right clubs for me but I made them work and I got down to 7 handicap. I only got fitted for the first a couple of years ago and its the best thing I've ever done. I am 65 and my swing speed has slowed that's why I decided to get fitted and with the help of the Pro I now have the right clubs and shafts for me and the best advise. Sorry I went on a bit and look forward to more of your content.
Mate, thanks for the comment. I appreciate all comments and if you feel you went on, in what what you wrote, then I deffo go on a long tome in my vlogs 😂 . That fitting system is just unreal and so accurate. Best thing I’ve done, for sure! Thank you so much for subscribing. I’ll admit the vlogs I’m releasing currently are ones I’ve filmed over the last 18 months, and never edited. But I’ll have more up to day content soon, I hope. Stay safe mate 👍🏻
Yep 👍
Ta mate
Really good content.
Thanks John 👍. Hope you’re well?
Just enquired about a mizono fitting at their centre at gleneagles so this was a great vid to see. How much over the cost of the irons was the fitting? looked worth its weight in gold tbh
They should call it “The Mizuno Experience”. I totally geek out when I’ve seen Jaco, who does the mobile fittings in the NW England and than down there with a Matt. It’s just quality I think, and you really are treated like a Pro!

Did you ever find out the cost mate? I'm thinking about doing the same
Very interesting video 👍
Thanks Calum. Hope you liked it and thanks for viewing and commenting. Feel free to share
“He’s back” 😂
Unfortunately for UA-cam and it’s views, I sure am 👍🏻
Cracked up when you said it after hitting a good shot. How much is an iron fitting there anyway please?
I was hoping you were going to try the MP20 Rob?
Sorry Wayno. The vlog was filmed in Nov 2018. The MP20’s hadn’t been released then. Reason for the delay in editing is that I’ve had some hardware issues since and had to change my entire system to Mac. On top of that I’ve Ben learning a new editing suite and it’s much more complex than my previous one.
@@robpottergolf Go back for another fitting and get those MP20's then bud.
Great vid Mr Potter, I really enjoyed your Mizuno experience (they are such a class company).
I haven't used their latest generation shaft optimiser, but I did experience their original version. Unfortunately in my case, it advised that I should forget playing golf and just stay in the Bar lol
Lmao Bandit! Love it!
Glad you liked the vlog though. I’ve been nervous about editing it as Mizuno Europe really stuck their neck out to allow me to film at their Performance Centre, is I had to be spot on. It’s took me 18 months to learn Premiere Pro so that I could do the edit some justice. Please feel free to share it. 👍

did you not try the 919 forged . they are the best irons i think i have them and dropped my hcp fron 19.8 to 11.9 last year
I did, briefly but the numbers didn’t even come close and after a few shots, Matt told me not too bother with it. So I left it out because the data wasn’t really worth a comparison
Was planning a Mizuno fitting experience prior to lockdown, hopefully sometime later this year. Thanks for the video
A pleasure Paul. Best I’ve had, mate 👍🏻
Give us fans more videos!,
Thanks mate. I’ll get some more out soon 👍🏻
Dobby is back
Never left buddy, just took an education sabbatical lol 😌
Great vid . Is it possible to go to Mizuno yous there shot optimiser. Then go to another brand .
Also how can they fit a full bag with just a 6/7 iron .Your driver swing or wedge are complete different .
Many thanks
Wes
Hiya Wesley. With drivers/woods, I don’t believe they currently have the Optimizer in that option. However I think they are looking to do something like that. With regard to their custom wedges I am totally unsure, you’d have to speak to them on that. If I’m honest, shaft option wise you’d probably go into more custom wedge shafts. I know with my SM7’s for example I mm in a more wedge specific shaft that a standard KBS Tour 90 that’s in my Mizuno irons. Woods and wedges are so unique in their shot types, though, aren’t they?
Not finished watching yet but a nice tech and numbers vlog here dude 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks mate. I’ve gone into as much detail as possible because amateurs need to know just how much this is needed to get the best possible fit
Rob Potter Golf best way to do a vlog like this mate , Shows the extent a fitting can go into , Cheers mate , More content when lockdown is over please , TTG vs RP soon ?
Cheers Owen. Just want my stuff to be informative and to help others, somehow. And I’m deffo up for a TTG vs Dobby
Weird seeing you in mizuno when you used to love Callaway. Good to see you back mate
Hi Brian. Thanks for the comment and viewing. I always said if I found something I’d think would improve my game, I’d swap. These irons certainly were the correct choice.
Welcome back you were missed!
Thanks Rick. That means a lot. Please think about subscribing as I’m gonna get much more out this year, I promise
Why is swing weight never mentioned ?
You know, you have a point there. It really isn’t and that probably needs addressing more. I think in all honesty, it’d just add to confusion to amateur golfers. How many 20hcp golfers are bothered if something is D1 it D3? Don’t forget swing weight can even be altered by what paint is on a grip! Can you imagine how many minds could get fried with that? It’s all relevant though, and I couldn’t agree more with you. For me the lads at TXG Golf channel here on UA-cam do the best comparisons and explanations in their reviews and live feeds.
@@robpottergolf Hi Rob thanks for the reply, until recently I had know idea a different weight grip could alter the swing weight, and it is mind blowing how a few grams can have such an effect, but all we hear about is shaft weight and flex when thinking about it swing weight is key because we swing a weighted club !
Brilliant Video Rob! Would love to go there for a fitting
Thanks Jamie. It was a great day down there
Wish you would explain why your spin is so low. What are you doing in your swing?
With the Callaway or Mizuno irons?
That fitting didn’t go to plan, he you gave the MP head first thinking you’d struggle and move you on to jpx which would have given you better numbers but you obviously didn’t like the feel of them.
Wasn’t so much it didn’t go to plan. Not at all, in fact. He did what he thought was best to start off with to rule club heads out. I’m glad it worked the way it did in the end. We talked afterwards about combo sets and that a mix bag could also work for me. If you haven’t already take a look at the WITB for 2019. That’s got the full iron set I got, as we found one other iron would be good for me within the set.
Hey Rob, as a golfer that's not of the giant variety, ie: 5'4 tall, did you get regular length shafts or a bit shorter?
Hi Silk. I’m 5”6 and they put me in standard length shafts buddy.
How tall you are is only one parameter ; how long are your arms is an important one too ! 😄
Looks like I need to get fitted then
Best thing I’ve ever done mate
Is it true this costs £500. Plus the clubs ???
If you go down to the main fitting centre at Bearwood Lakes, yes. However when they do their Tour Truck days and the normal range/golf club visits then no, the fitting session they do remotely is free.
@@robpottergolf thanks Rob. A bit steep for a fitting. But a great experience. I’m looking to having a new set of irons from mizuno. Will go to one of the regional free fitting places.
Rob, you're not pregnant, like me you're built for comfort not speed!!
Enough ads on this video?
I didn’t choose the adds. I just kept it at auto. Not even watched it back since I released it. If there’s a few it will at least breaks the footage up
Rob Potter Golf - I don’t know how the ads work I thought the editor decides how many.
Anyway good video, keep it up and I will look out for what you post in the future. Your about the same ability as me so have more in common than these pros posting stuff.
Not another golf UA-cam bandwagon jumper 🤦♂️
Where have you been? I’ve been on here since 2013, so you’re only 7 years late in your criticism 😂😂😂😂😂
