Reaction to the “25 Essential Thrash Albums” article by Revolver

- Revolver Magazine posted an article some time back on what they think are the 25 essential thrash metal albums. Since I was knee deep into thrash during the classic era, I’ll be reacting to the article in full, making corrections, suggesting alternatives, and generally making a nuisance of myself. Sounds fun, right?

I’m sure YOU have your own list of essential thrash albums. Let me know which ones you agree with, which ones you’d drop, and which ones you’d include that aren't here. Let me know that, and anything else - including any articles you'd like to see me react to next - in the comments below.
New to the channel. Fantastic info. I'm a bit younger and haven't heard a few of these albums in full. Got some catching up to do. Great descriptions on each album. Never heard Vio-Lence before. Holy cripes, what awesome stuff. Thanks for the great work.
11 minutes in and Exodus should absolutely be higher on the list. Unless they said it's in no particular order then maybe I missed that but anyway it's absolutely important and iconic. Top 10 for sure.
Always love the shows you give us. The list is ok aside from Frolic over Ultra-violence. I was more surprised given some lack of Venom. Even Hellhammer and Celtic Frost were once thought of as early thrash and all influenced the bands in the list. But some others, Running Wild, Raven, Onslaught, Razor, Mortal Sin, and Artillery were essential to the early great moments before thrash had a genre. BUT it is Revolver who thinks Slipknot is essential lol. I just appreciate that someone recognizes the music period. We were ignored by mainstream for so long, it’s nice to see a platform of sorts that still throws some love our way! Take care, Matt. Happy Holidays!!!
Interesting video to watch this week. I’ve come to look at articles like this in all these mags and sites like Revolver or (shudders) Loudwire with suspect, because, man, I’ve seen some blissfully ignorant and condescending shit in them. This list wasn’t as offensive, but FROLIC over THE ULTRA-VIOLENCE?! Boo-urns!
Great job, Matt! Always a pleasure.
This list is my favorite music of all time.
Doomsday...came out in 86. Century Media would reissue Seven Churches. Baffled that Venom aren't mentioned, but not surprised that Xentrix or Sabbat weren't mentioned; I'm aware that British thrash didn't make a dent in the States. Great video, look forward to the next one.
I mention the Doomsday typo at the end of the video.
weird not to throw in that Les Claypool was also in Blind Illusion, with Larry LaLonde !
I agree with pretty much everything you said here. It's always a bit dodgy with these magazines. They throw in all kinds of stuff into the thrash section but Revolver did fine I think. :)
It may sound weird but imo my fave by a band doesn´t necessary need to be in an "essential" list. For example, my fave Kreator is "Extreme..." but I totally agree that "Pleasure..." should be on the list.
Onslaught also had a song called "Death Metal" in´85 and on the inner of Sepultura´s "Bestial Devastation" it also says "Death Metal". Noise used the title for a comp that didn´t even had a Death Metal band on it... well, one could argue about Hellhammer... and Cronos used the term in a very old (can´t remember the year) Venom interview. Nothing to fight over but always a fun topic to discuss!
One word that both Revolver and you overlooked... Annihilator. Yeah yeah, we all know that they've gone through some serious ups and downs over the decades, but they've put out some iconic albums that definitely should have placed above some of the ones Revolver went with (in my humble opinion, of course). Even some of their newer albums like Ballistic Sadistic are more classic thrash than some of those Revolver picks. And sticking with the Canadian theme from Annihilator, there's always Strapping Young Lad, but I don't think anybody ever really knows how to classify any of Devin's project into a genre.
I agree with: Anthrax, Slayer, Metallica, Sanctuary, Nuclear A, Voivod, Sepultura, Testament album pics.
Suicidal yes has such a varied history: for me it's the 1st album that I love the most (far from thrash I know) but some of that thrash from How Will I Laugh to Art of Rebellion is great. I could make a great best of comp from those 4.
Glad someone else said it lol Peace Sells really isn't a political album despite that incredible Repka art. Everyone knows that album but it doesn't get enough credit for how dark it is.
Probably predictable choices but my most listened Thrash...
01. Metallica - master of puppets (1986)
02. Slayer - reign in blood (1986)
03. Nuclear Assault - game over (1986)
04. Anthrax - spreading the disease (1985)
05. Metal Church - the dark (1986)
06. Destruction - sentence of death (1984)
07. VoiVod - rrroooaaarrr (1986)
08. Razor - evil invaders (1985)
09. Exodus - bonded by blood (1985)
10. Sepultura - arise (1991)
I would have had Sacrifice - Soldiers of Misfortune, Forced Entry - Uncertain Future, and I think DBC- Dead Brain Cells doesn't get enough recognition. Crumbsuckers- Beast on My Back, I could listen to that album forever and never tire of it.
It is a good essential list but man is it different to my favourite list. Maybe an episode "Essential vs. Favourite" with the same 25 bands is a good idea. Is it a northern american thing always to forget the first two Annihilator albums?
When you're talking about essential 25 thrash albums i feel it's a waste of a slot putting S.O.D in there. It's a fun joke at first but it wore off really quickly in my circles. Sanctuary / Metal Church not enough thrash in them but not bad albums. Im not one for pushing the UK stuff over the US or Germany because we know our place over here but i did think Sabbat offer something else and should've been on. Yeah Coroner too.
By the way, Zoetrope would’ve caused me a heart attack lol😂
I say Coroner over Carnivore for any list !
my favorites (though) are Death Angel - Act III, Destruction - Infernal Overkill (slightly over ED), Kreator - Terrible Certainty, Megadeth - Rust sometimes, sometimes Peace Sells.., Possessed - Beyond the Gates (if only it had better production dammit), Sodom - Persecution Mania (easily the more evil & better album).
Matt - you didn't catch the "Doomsday For the Receiver" ??
LOL
so many thoughts here:
-Youre so right about Frolic. Not a great album by any means. Mark himself despises the album. Ultra-Violence a much better representation of thrash
-Carnivore is not "essential". In fact, Retaliation blows it away in the thrash department.
-I think Taking Over is the greatest pure thrash rep for Overkill and I stand by my minority opinion claim that Horrorscope is way overhyped.
-Eternal Nightmare is my favorite thrash album of all-time and you nail the beauty of why Killian is perfect for that album. Yes, he is much more controlled on OTM
-I too prefer Twisted Into Form but don't have an issue with FE being in here
-Love Sanctuary and it is thrash but maybe not "essential"
-Same with ST, How Will I Laugh is my fav of theirs and their most thrash offering, but again, not essential
-Not a Dark Angel fan myself, one of the most overrated thrash bands imo. Mundane vocals and generic riffs played super fast with great drumming.........But again, a minority opinion
-Annihilator's Alice In Hell should have replaced a few here
to me it sounds clear at the end of "Experiment" - Dimension Hate-ross not Hat-ross
As much as I like them, I wouldn't call Carnivore or SOD "essential" they're just cult classics. They'd be replaced with DRI and Leeway if it were me.
I'd also replace Arise with Morbid Visions or Schizophrenia, to me those represent the core of that early "bestial" Brazilian style (Sarcofago, Sextrash, Mutilator etc.) better than Arise.
I'm also disappointed in the lack of death/thrash outside of Possessed, no Demolition Hammer or Solstice is a crime lol.
Very strange not to see Coroner on the list.
Doomsday is 1986 I believe
Said it at the end of the video.
Oh no, when UA-camrs start doing “reaction” videos, it means they’re running out of ideas.
Not even close.
