Both the SNES and Genesis Shadowrun games are masterpieces in their own way. I especially love the music in this version. This game, more than most, makes me feel like I’m right back in the “sweet spot” of the 90’s when I play it.
The music in this is awesome, isn't it. The bass gets so funky, and those cheesy synth strings are perfect. I've tried to get into the Genesis one many times, and I like it, but I always end up hitting a brick wall when I get to the point where the world opens up. I'm sure I'm missing something, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what that might be.
1:10 Imagine my surprise playing this as a kid, hearing how strict Nintendo was with its content, and they straight up show the main character getting gunned down in the street outnumbered four to one. No mercy. Dude was running away. Annihilated. CLEAR AS FREAKING DAY. I was so hooked lol.
If you look closely at this scene, it seems that the people gunning Jake down are actually Anders, Frogtongue and Jetboy, three of te shadowrunners you can hire around that same section of the game
Shadowrun was a great example of a game that was so cool it didn't matter that young me had no idea how to play it well. I could only ever get so far until a lack of understanding gated my progress, as it should be. I should revisit this now that I'm much older.
I actually talked to one of the devs of this game(Paul Kidd). They had a very short period of time for development. I think it was 6 months if I remember correctly. I always wondered why the game seems to end abruptly. The game probably would have been even better if they had more time to develop. Paul also helped to develop Nightshade on the NES. Paul and Jeff Kamenek were the reason for the silly dialogue that I think makes the game so memorable today.
I remember beating this game while having walking pneumonia - this game and a mix of high fever and medication are a trip. I am a huge fan of the Shadowrun universe and loved seeing Jake's cameo in Shadowrun Returns. Great run!
This version is fine as a standalone game and does include some _Shadowrun_ lore the Genesis doesn't (fox shapeshifters having their tail in human form). But the lack of the slang from SR2 and 3, the funky way they made trolls look, and the handling of magic and cyberware just puts it lower in my book. I'm a _Shadowrun_ purist, that's all I can say.
The game that created my now-lifelong love affair with this universe. Because of this game and the Genesis version, I got into the tabletop game, and ran the same campaign with the same characters for 9 years, over three editions. It got me into the novels, and into cyberpunk in general. Everyone has that one game that is the most influential in their lives, and I have to say this one is mine...
I've been watching this the entire day, and I have to say "Time well spent!". Thank you so much for making and posting this, I never Managed to get very far in this game as a kid and always wanted to know what else was gonna happen. 4,7/5.0
I got this game as a kid randomly once from my dad. Could never beat it by myself, I literally didn't know how to get the Maria Mercurial concert tickets. Then when we finally got Internet years later, I just wrote down an entire guide to the game on a notebook and went on to beat it by following the guide when I was in middle school. I still love this game and the music and I'll forever be mad we never got that Shadowrun II sequel 😢
This game was so much fun. I cleared it over a couple of weekend rentals. Then I tried the Genesis version... and returned it that same day.

Ha... that's interesting, I actually preferred the Genesis version. You should give it another try. I like that each game has the same source material, but are totally different experiences.
I'm about almost 2 hours in and you've progressed so fast considering the game doesn't guide you at all. Still going to watch it all. Thanks for uploading this.
Definitely. I also really liked Super Smash TV for the SNES, Nightshade (NES), Choplifter III (SNES), Blades of Vengeance (Genesis), and True Lies (SNES).
Spending first 30 minutes just killing stuff in the room next to your apartment is optimal but damn near no one did this back in the day because we had no idea it would be a good idea. I'd wander around town everywhere trying to figure out what to do.
If u notice many of this these 80 90 nes snes games always av a story theme stating the years 2020.30. 50 etc....now we in the 2000s heading there...coming to present
I grew up on an acreage (basically DEEP in the countryside) when this came out. I barely knew about D&D and didn't know anything about the Shadowrun rpg at ALL. Playing this was like a fever dream. WHY am I being shot at by TROLLS? WHY is the DOG talking to ME? WHY am I chasing a vampire to interrogate him about a ghost JESTER?
This was the first Shadowrun video game I ever finished. Thinking back, it's really thin on Shadowrun lore (return of magic, goblinization of the populace). In "Shadowrun Returns" your character partners up with Jake Armitage for a while. Still need to finish the Genesis game...
shared the game with my cousin; once at the end, he called to ask how to finish it; he didn't had "head computer" in his list; you get it while talking to the bartender in the beginning; I didn't know and I laughed saying that he will laugh too when finding; he got upset and I cut the call; I learned a month later that he had to restart the whole game to complete it; not my fault but I still feel bad about it; enough to describe how this game is good, when someone replay a whole rpg. there's a vid on youtube about a code that gives access to a secret level for devellopers; there you can respawn in the level you want, with the money and equipment you want, if I'm not mistaking. the soundtrack is great enough to have it in the music list. - oops - what do you mean "oops"? what is this loud ticking sound? - hmm, a cortex bomb, I think thank you videostore for accepting to sell it to the teenager I was; like brand new.
I am not understanding you. You have to speak with the first bartender to get the iced tea. It is an essential item to progress out of the initial area.
@@Steelflight773 you're correct and it took a moment to find that I mixed stuff. It was decades ago. It's not the "bartender", it's the "bar". And it's not "head computer", it's "Raitsov" from Jetboy. The tag is needed for the scientist. I was sure he had it. And I must have said the opposite in the past🤦
I tried looking it up. Apparently, it's slang carried over from the tabletop game, like "frag," "drek," or "wiz." "Geeked" means "killed" or "murdered."
I don't think this one is nearly as good as the Genesis Shadowrun. The music alone makes the latter worth playing. And I still think it's one of the coolest renditions of Cyberspace.
I will Recommend You To Play Bahamut Lagoon It is a great Jrpg That is Unique And Also worth playing (Use The Near Translation Patch As The DeJap Patch Hasn't Aged Well)
You Should Also Play Lagrange Point, (That Game Has A VRC7 Chip That While Weaker Than The Yamaha 2413 Chip Used For The Mega Drive/Genesis Hardware Provides Sounds That You Cannot Hear On Actual Famicom/NES Hardware) Sakura Wars, Treasure Hunter G, Treasure Of The Rudras (It has A Unique Magic System That Lets You Type Any Words To Create A Spell) And Front Mission (Use The Addendum That Fixes The Grammar And Typos That Plague The Original Fan Translation Released In 2001)
His take is probably not too much different overall. The SNES version went for an action RPG style, and the Genesis version went for a CRPG style. It depends on what someone is looking for in a video game adaptation of a tabletop game. Many people like both equally because they're so different from each other.

Hopefully you get this message. Thank you!

I believe Nightshade was included on the Evercade Piko Collection 1 cart. I need to play that again when time allows...

Walking pneumonia is a stupid condition. Just stop walking, what's the big deal?
story, characters, dialogue, gameplay, music, violence.. this game has it all
Absolutely one of the top greatest games of all times, soundtrack still holds up too
This game is an underrated masterpiece! It's too bad that this game never got the sequel that it deserves.
It technically did lol. Shadowrun Returns.
I wished this series could had an epic comeback as baldur's gate 3 had

This game was remade in its entirety as a player made mod for Shadowrun Returns. Also, the speedruns for this game are very entertaining.
A surprisingly good classic from a company mostly known for not-so-good games!
(Beam, that is. Data East is awesome)
When you have bomb in your head and the doctor tell you to try aspirin instead 😂
I bought a complete in box copy of this game a few years ago on Ebay for $120. The framed poster is still hanging on the wall next to my bed.
Is it the poster of Jake running face forwards? I got a CIB but not the poster. I cannot figure out if it actually came with it or not.
One of the best soundtracks ever!
excellent, excellent games, both this one and its vastly different sega counterpart.
