I'm amazed at the sheer number of Pokemon they included. There had to be a point where they were like, "If we add another Pokemon, that will mean we need another 326 sprites!" And the reply was, apparently, "No worries! Let's add another 58!" My hat is off to the artists, you're the ones who made this game so awesome,
My understanding is that it initially started as just portion of custom fusions, and more have been patched in over time. The generic "X head + Y body" was the placeholder until someone either got to it or had a good idea for it.
The game has a lot of placeholder sprites that just put a head on another body and altered the base colors. The sprites were added in by sprite artists who did it for fun
Thank you! I''m one of the less prolific artists working on the game (although I'm pretty proud of my Hitmonlee/Dodrio fusion) but I'm still proud to be part of it! Some of the people in there have hundreds of sprites to their name, and a few have over 1000! It's a really cool community.
Edit: Keeping the comment up but I made the mistake of thinking they were talking about adding fusions rather than just the literal bulk of sprites (both default & custom) that would have had to be included with each new Pokemon.
That's not how it works.... They had all the Pokemon fusions from the start since they were made by a program that slaps together two Pokemon and usually they look like abominations but over time more and more people have submitted custom sprites to replace them on the discord which get added in sprite packs every month.
You can see it briefly at 8:55, the grey silhouette is one made by the program and the green is a custom sprite which we see in the video.
As they add new Pokemon, they leave the default fusion as the placeholder and, in their discord, artists with good ideas for fusions make them and submit them for their team to run through it and choose the best ones. Many custom sprites are made by the fanbase itself and they are credited when you unlock that fusion. This way, they don't have to worry about overworking themselves and the fans feel like they have their own special touch in the game. A great method imo

Oh they did something really cool with Gold's team in this, it actually mirrors how Red's team was put together in GSC. All of the Pokemon Gold uses are static encounters you'll get when playing through GSC. The Sudowoodo outside Goldenrod + the gift Shuckle in Cianwood. The Togepi you get from the mystery egg + the Eevee you get from Bill in Goldenrod. The Dratini you get from the Dragon's Den + the Shiny Gyarados from the Lake of Rage, and obviously the three starters and the legendary beasts.

Just as a little update, since Jacob streaming this 48 new Pokemon were added to the game increasing the total number of pokemon to 468 and the total amount of possible fusions to 437580
Had to edit the number of possible fusions, since i calculated it wrong. It's 468*468*2 - 468 (for all the self fusions, cause they're the same no matter the order)
Plus the plot has changed a bit, from what was shown here (he skipped getting some legendaries and mythicals, the first meeting with Cynthia before Mt. Silver, and what Colress's actual function is). Jasmine is vacationing near Bond Bridge, and you get something important for beating her besides the badge. There is also more to Mt. Silver that explains Cynthia's terror, plus a new questline for a beast that is very ultra.
Last time I checked they said they were done adding new pokemon. Guess they changed their mind, holy shit.
@@nixel1324The large number of streamers and youtubers playing this game has significantly increased the number of people on the game's Spriters Discord. I should know, I was one of those people. Presumably, having so many more people working on sprites made them more comfortable with the exponential increase in spritework each additional Pokemon brings.
@@nixel1324 I mean, it's possible that last time you checked was before they reworked how the game works to allow them to add more pokemon, as before the rework I think that they had pretty much reached the limit of what could be added.

The idea that Red was on his journey and suddenly got sent into the future is so cool and somehow more believable than him just randomly deciding to disappear one day and spend all of his time atop Mt. Silver.
And not even getting his Pokémon to level 100.
Someone else said that before the update where red time travels, he was actually supposed to spend 3 whole years hiking up the mountain, which is probable but would raise questions as to why Red's pokemons arent max leveled

in the manga, the elite 4 (who are villains) fuck him up pretty good since they try to hurt each other in the manga and he has to hike up Mt Silver to a hot spring to heal.
What's amazing to me isn't just the amount of content, but the fact that they keep ADDING to the game. Like everything here with Cynthia is new from when I last played through, the whole bit with Mt silver was totally different, it was a one way at the end because your character spent 3 years climbing the mountain rather than the time warp. It's so cool to see how dedicated the team is to this game

@@pembertr0n It literally is though. They have strict deadlines to meet with the release of Pokémon TCG and anime. If you want better Pokémon games then the entire system needs to be restructured, which won’t happen when the games still sell millions.
@@pembertr0n making games takes effort, the disconnect becomes from making games for passion vs making games for money. Pokemon company makes games for money, primarily through merchandise sales vs the game sales themselves. So the games don't need to be good, they need to be marketable.

The amount of effort put into this fangame is genuinely insane, I can't even begin to imagine how many hours it took to make all the custom sprites. _Especially_ with how high-quality they all are
TBF they have a fuckton of artists who submit custom fusions so it's not like it's just the core team making them but yeeeeeah
The game's discord server is great for that sort of thing. Last pride they got a bunch of artists together to collectively do like, every single Sylveon fusion for instance.

You pretty much repeat what I've been telling my friends after playing this: Even if you were to ignroe the fusion gimmick entirely, this is just outright an amazingly high-quality pokemon game in pretty much every aspect.
What´s also really crazy about Infinite Fusion to me is that they´re still updating it. They recently announced that they plan to implement Trainer Customization and several new species and fusions have been added ever since Alpha did his playthrough

After the first vid Alpharad made about infinite fusion I picked it up myself and beat the story while collecting all the possible legendaries. He's absolutely right about the game just becoming a mix and match experiment toward the end. Its such a cool game with tons of talented artists. It took me too long to realize when playing that you can actually choose which sprite to use if multiple people have made their own take on certain fusions and after learning that the game basically turned into just looking at images. Unironically its one of the best pokemon games i've ever played, especially if you're a pokemon nerd because you'll recognize so many things
Thank you for the shout out for the game's story, it's something that never gets mentioned but it really does stand out as a pokemon fangame in terms of its writing and original plot content.
Not because it's like a fantastic narrative or anything, but because of how exceptionally NOT BAD it is.

This really shouldn't be the standard of Pokémon fangames considering literal _thousands_ of people worked on it for _years_ to get it to this point. It should be in its own category and not be compared to fangames made by one person, otherwise every past and future rom will just look crap.
Yeah, a large part of the appreciation is for the sheer commitment to the bit.
As for the fusion sprites themselves, I like to mention indie game Cassette Beasts which has a streamlined (asset-wise) fusion system between literally all of its own monsters (so, with 140 monsters that means 28,800 fusions). But upon analysis each monster species really has only _two_ sprite sets: one for the base species, and one for the species fused with itself. Crucially, this "fusion sprite" is constructed via individual modular components, thus allowing the fusion system to just assemble the relevant components from each source species. (Typically, one monster provides the overall body plan while the other adds specific features.)

You summed up my thoughts on this game as well as your own. It's absolutely mind-blowing how wonderful this game is, and the community contributing to it is so active too. There are so many possibilities, there's so much content, and there are so many moments of well-written twists and things that subvert a long time Pokemon Fan's expectations. Definitely an 11/10 for me.

Infinite Fusion is one of the most fantastic fangames ever made. The amount of references that went into the story, the storytelling being fantastic and just the amount of fusions, it's absolutely incredible.

Having played through the game twice, I want to go again. The end of the video sums it up well, a love letter to pokemon. I am tempted to say the unique sprites by the talented artists do all the heavy lifting, but the plot and game itself is so well designed and so much fun, it wouldn't be a good experience if neat sprites were all it had.
